Despite being the dead of winter in the northern hemisphere, all was not gloom in Demoness. The season was called Second Summer and was indeed more like its counterpart than an opposite. The weather was warmer and slightly humid, though the latter was due to the shower was predicted to visit Sacred Rock later that evening. For the time being, the weather was overcast as Ned Davion descended into the airport. He would soon be followed by Gavrila de Sud, but he was not quite aware of that fact yet.

Visits between Fenwick and Demoness had become more than routine, with the prince representing his country more often than his father, and they had lost all their formality; a simple phone call announced his arrival and a car would meet him at the airport with little fanfare. He was admitted to the Plateau and after a little witty banter with the Guardian of the Gateway, an ex-girlfriend, he was led into Jia Li's private solar.

Though technically a solar, it was more specifically a library and Jia Li lounged with her legs across her husband's lap; a chitael, either Nemesis or Aphrodite, lay in hers. She propped up a book on her chitael's head, reading happily while her husband reviewed something on a tablet. She looked up as Ned entered and smiled. "Hey, Ned-mitsu," she greeted. "I'd stand but..." She indicated the hundred pound animal purring on her lap. "When did you get in?"

"Aren't they trying to use chitaels as surrogates too?" Ned asked.

At that Gavrila looked over at Ned, one of her eyebrows raised. "Um, can zey do zat?" she asked, "I mean, I know zey are similar, but zey are not ze same. Right?"

Adiwyn shrugged. "I'm not sure about that, milord," she replied. "But yes, they are that similar. They are like, ano, donkeys and horses. They can crossbreed and I believe they are more closely related. The scientific name is only one word off, but I am not very well versed in nomenclature so I can only speculate."

"Yeah you can breed a donkey and a horse, but mules are sterile. Right?" Gavrila said, shaking her head, "A shitty comparison. And why would you crossbreed vultaels wiz somezing zat is not a vultael? Zat kind of breeding program does not make more vultaels. And I assume zat is ze point of ze entire point."

"I meant more that they were thinking of utilizing chitaels as surrogates in the theoretical cloning programs. I don't think the cross breeding would work," he said nodding to Gavrila. "I have a feeling it'd be like the lion/tiger crossbreeds. While they aren't completely sterile, they're not the best source for continued bloodlines."

Adiwyn shook her head. "Let me clarify what I meant then. I meant that they are close enough that they can breed, so being a surrogate, as you stated, would not make much of a biological difference," she replied. "I am uncertain if they are utilizing chitael surrogates, but I suppose that would make sense. I am not well-versed in the program itself as I was not present for all moments of its setup."

Gavrila just shrugged, "Eh, I suppose zat does make sense. I still zink zat bringing a species back from being endangered using cloning sounds too sci-fi to me. But hey, nobody knows what ze future will be like."

Then she leaned back on the railing and grinned at Ned, "Right?"

"I don't know what you're talking about. I'm from the future and was sent back to gather accurate historical data," he said with an overly serious face.

"Yeah, and humans are all from an alien planet," Gavrila replied, laughing both at Ned and the face he was making, "So, does zat mean Fenwick is in league wiz time travelers? Do ze Demonessians know too?"

"Who do you think sent us back?" Ned asked. "And you shouldn't joke about that. There's actually a group in Fenwick that seriously believes that we didn't start out here and we abandoned all technology after arriving. They're a strange bunch."
