Despite being the dead of winter in the northern hemisphere, all was not gloom in Demoness. The season was called Second Summer and was indeed more like its counterpart than an opposite. The weather was warmer and slightly humid, though the latter was due to the shower was predicted to visit Sacred Rock later that evening. For the time being, the weather was overcast as Ned Davion descended into the airport. He would soon be followed by Gavrila de Sud, but he was not quite aware of that fact yet.

Visits between Fenwick and Demoness had become more than routine, with the prince representing his country more often than his father, and they had lost all their formality; a simple phone call announced his arrival and a car would meet him at the airport with little fanfare. He was admitted to the Plateau and after a little witty banter with the Guardian of the Gateway, an ex-girlfriend, he was led into Jia Li's private solar.

Though technically a solar, it was more specifically a library and Jia Li lounged with her legs across her husband's lap; a chitael, either Nemesis or Aphrodite, lay in hers. She propped up a book on her chitael's head, reading happily while her husband reviewed something on a tablet. She looked up as Ned entered and smiled. "Hey, Ned-mitsu," she greeted. "I'd stand but..." She indicated the hundred pound animal purring on her lap. "When did you get in?"

"Oh, I know. Zere are people who zink zat in Cetatsenia too," Gavrila replied, smiling as she shrugged, "Same kind of people who zink aliens come and abduct our trees, I bet. And I am not making zat up, a few years ago zere was a man in Neclintit who claimed he witnessed a UFO using a tractor beam to abduct trees."

Adiwyn raised an eyebrow. "Some people are desperate for attention or need serious mental health," she quipped. "But in Fenwick, it is a true religion: the Church of Ascension." She turned to Ned. "Though doesn't it border more on 'cult' status?"

At that Gavrila blinked in surprise and almost incomprehension. For once the Knezinja was speechless, and she just stared at Adiwyn and Ned for a few moments before focusing on the Prince. "Wait, wait, wait," she said, "You mean to say zat in Fenwick zere is a recognized religion based on zat? Are you fucking kidding me?"

Ned shook his head. "It's actually got a fairly large following, considering its belief system. I'm not really sure it should be considered a church... more a pseudo-scientific belief with a religious-like following?"

Gavrila just stared at Ned, unable to say anything except, "But, how?"

"There were some archaeological finds in the desert that could corroborate their story with a stretch of the imagination. Sometimes that's all it takes," he said with a shrug.

"Ugh, zat is just stupid," Gavrila said, "I mean, hell, I understand zat religion requires a leap of faiz but zis is science. Zis is supposed to be ze kind of stuff you actually need evidence for."

Adiwyn shrugged. "It was a few decades ago and unfortunately, the artifacts recovered have been misplaced. The archaeologists who worked the dig have a different opinion about the artifacts, of course, but the pictures of them and the site inspire a different story. It's fairly amazing though how quickly the following developed and I'm surprised it isn't classified as a cult."

Gavrila just shook her head, then she looked over to Ned. "Why ze hell is it considered a religion anyway?" she asked, "I mean can any goddamn zing become a religion in Fenwick if people believe it?"

"Fenwick never officially recognizes any religion, so if a group attains enough of a following it's possible for the general consensus to designate it a religion." Ned shrugged. "So, I guess, in a sense the answer's yes. A few documentaries have been done on the group."
