Despite being the dead of winter in the northern hemisphere, all was not gloom in Demoness. The season was called Second Summer and was indeed more like its counterpart than an opposite. The weather was warmer and slightly humid, though the latter was due to the shower was predicted to visit Sacred Rock later that evening. For the time being, the weather was overcast as Ned Davion descended into the airport. He would soon be followed by Gavrila de Sud, but he was not quite aware of that fact yet.

Visits between Fenwick and Demoness had become more than routine, with the prince representing his country more often than his father, and they had lost all their formality; a simple phone call announced his arrival and a car would meet him at the airport with little fanfare. He was admitted to the Plateau and after a little witty banter with the Guardian of the Gateway, an ex-girlfriend, he was led into Jia Li's private solar.

Though technically a solar, it was more specifically a library and Jia Li lounged with her legs across her husband's lap; a chitael, either Nemesis or Aphrodite, lay in hers. She propped up a book on her chitael's head, reading happily while her husband reviewed something on a tablet. She looked up as Ned entered and smiled. "Hey, Ned-mitsu," she greeted. "I'd stand but..." She indicated the hundred pound animal purring on her lap. "When did you get in?"

Adiwyn nodded. "Or any kind of meat, though I have noted that the more domesticated cats will eat anything they are given, which is unfortunate as I don't believe it is particularly healthy for them to eat anything other than meat." She shrugged. "I haven't seen any fat cheetahs either, so maybe there is no harm."

At Adiwyn's words, Gavrila grinned and gave a short snort of laughter, "Ha! A fat cheetah; as bad as zat would be it is still funny as fuck to imagine."

Ned thought for a minute. "Yeah, I can't really picture that either. Even with the chitaels acting like big house cats sometimes, I can't see it."

"Yeah, zey do act like pet cats from what I have seen," Gavrila said with a grin, "Not zat I know for sure, since ze only pet cats I have seen are in movies. Zey are not too common up in Cetatsenia."

Adiwyn smiled. "The chitael is the closest we have to a house cat," she agreed. She was aware of attempts in the past to import real house cats and they seemed to get along well with chitaels, who were an easy-going breed, but the trend did not last for very long and the few cats that remained were only in the hands of a few. The feral cats, on the other hand, were rounded up, taken to a shelter, and sterilized; they were not euthanized for the same reason as other animals: they may inherited some of Daemonesu-kae's blood through their exposure to the country.

"Heh, well I will stick wiz my great rats any day," Gavrila said, grinning, "As nice as chitaels are, I want an actual pet. Plus, rats are cuter."

Then the Knezinja turned to Ned, "Speaking of great rats, do you actually know what zey are? I know I have mentioned zem, but not everyone has heard of zem before."

Ned shook his head. "I just assumed that they were very large rodents?"

Gavrila grinned and laughed at the Prince's response; then she proceeded to hold out her hands in front of her, around four feet apart. "Zis is how big my largest baby is, not counting ze tail," she said, "Zey are not just very large, zey are huge. At least for a rodent."

"That is the size of a small child," Adiwyn marveled. "How did they grow so large?"

"Well most are not zat big, but my largest was a rescue. He was bred for rat fighting, so he is bigger zan most," Gavril said, shrugging, "Most are ze size of a small dog. And I do not know why ze hell zey are so big, zey just are."
