Despite being the dead of winter in the northern hemisphere, all was not gloom in Demoness. The season was called Second Summer and was indeed more like its counterpart than an opposite. The weather was warmer and slightly humid, though the latter was due to the shower was predicted to visit Sacred Rock later that evening. For the time being, the weather was overcast as Ned Davion descended into the airport. He would soon be followed by Gavrila de Sud, but he was not quite aware of that fact yet.

Visits between Fenwick and Demoness had become more than routine, with the prince representing his country more often than his father, and they had lost all their formality; a simple phone call announced his arrival and a car would meet him at the airport with little fanfare. He was admitted to the Plateau and after a little witty banter with the Guardian of the Gateway, an ex-girlfriend, he was led into Jia Li's private solar.

Though technically a solar, it was more specifically a library and Jia Li lounged with her legs across her husband's lap; a chitael, either Nemesis or Aphrodite, lay in hers. She propped up a book on her chitael's head, reading happily while her husband reviewed something on a tablet. She looked up as Ned entered and smiled. "Hey, Ned-mitsu," she greeted. "I'd stand but..." She indicated the hundred pound animal purring on her lap. "When did you get in?"

"I can imagine it was rather unpleasant. Did you at least have a good dinner out of it?"

"Well shit, I probably should have caught zat," Gavrila said, and then shrugged, "Eh, it was not even zat big of a crab. And besides, I do not really like crab. It tastes fine, but it is too much damn work for so little meat."

Gavrila laughed in response to the Prince's question, grinning as she said, "Honestly, I prefer any kind of meat zat I do not have to dig zrough a sharp shell to get."

"Don't like to have to fight with your food, eh? Understandable," Ned replied. "So back a bit, what are the great rats like in the wild? Are they like the smaller versions?"

"I guess so. I mean I am not exactly an expert on how rats act in ze wild, but it cannot be zat different from how smaller ones act," Gavrila said with a shrug, "Zough I zink ze groups tend to be smaller, since great rats are a hell of a lot bigger zan ozer rats."

Ned nodded. "I could only imagine what it would be like if they didn't reduce their group sizes, especially in some areas." He looked into the tank, watching the bio-luminescent fish swimming in the dark tank. "I wonder how they simulate the pressure for the depth that these things live at. Darkness is one thing..."

Gavrila followed Ned's gaze into the tank, moving to stand right beside the Prince. She stared silently in the tank for a very short moment before speaking. "Actually, I am curious as to how zey got ze fish here in ze first place," she said, "Zey cannot survive higher up, right? It cannot be as easy as sticking zem in a tank and hauling zem up."
