Solaris is a city that never sleeps between international trade, with local and overseas markets opening twelve hours apart, and an active night life centered around movie stars and artists. Being situated on the Blood River has made it a flourishing trade city and it is often called the Gateway of Demoness. It is the second largest city in the nation and is home to Joint Base Diomasachi-Solaris, which overlooks Solaris Bay.

During the day, hundreds of ships and planes pass through their respective ports to process international travelers. Traffic hums across the high-speed rails that run trains on precise schedules, though Solaris is one of the few cities that also accommodates automobile traffic. Millions of feet travel its streets and footpaths daily and its skyscrapers are among the most sophisticated in the world: not only are they designed to be environmentally friendly, generating electricity and food through byzantine hydroponics setups, but they also facilitate foot traffic by providing skyways between buildings. While the city grew organically, several attempts to renovate and redirect streets have been made to correct it to a grid structure, though the oldest buildings were spared and have become historical monuments. Though built from steel and concrete, Solaris integrates rather than destroys its natural surroundings in accordance with the country's staunch environmental policy. From skyscrapers to city streets, from the outskirts to the heart of the city, the natural world can be found side by side with the modern world. Chitaels roam freely through the streets, going about their daily business no different from their human counterparts, but the streets are kept clean, both from dirt and from crime by an alert police force.

When night falls, the bustle of the day merges with the flamboyance and extravagance of the night life. Solaris is the capital of the Demonessian film and theatre industries; it is lesser known for its contribution to the music industry, comedy circuit, and fine arts, but they have a large presence within the city's heart. Shows and film premiers open in the evening and performers have their own industry to cater to them; not only do clubs and bars stay open into the wee morning hours, but some costumers, caterers, technicians, and other specialists have night hours solely to support these industries.

The premier of the First Lavinarian Film Festival is was a shining beacon of Solaris lavishness. The red carpet was rolled out and people crowded behind the velvet ropes to get a look at the arriving celebrities. Flashbulbs went off like lightning and the dull roar of the gathered was like rolling thunder. There were several reporters from various stations, both local and international, stopping actors, directors, and the like as they walked down the carpet. Toward the back and surrounded by security guards, there were several protesters with signs in Morai; considering how they reacted when the director of Through the Other Side made his appearance, it was safe to assume they were protesting the movie.

Despite being practically illegal in Demoness, a red and black sports car roared up to the curb and Eris Katsuragi nonchalantly exited from the driver's side. She sashayed in front of the cameras, certain to stop and pose for every one of them with a wide smile, and she paused often to sign autographs for fans. She wore a low-cut green gown with a slit that run up the entirety of her left leg. Her long white hair cascaded down her back, layered and curled. She wore her newest beau, a man of just twenty-one, on her arm as decoration, and she had been accused of cradle robbing due to their age difference. This was the nicest of accusations, especially throughout her lifetime, as her career had waned since the early 2000s and it was assumed the match was a stunt; she was nearly twice the man's age and his birthday had only been a few weeks ago. She had also managed to secure the position of host and she was indeed very charismatic; it was possible this appearance could revive her career.

OOC: Go ahead and describe your characters' arrival. I'll continue the opening ceremony later. In case anyone else reading this wants to vote, here are the movie links:

The arrival of the Intermarine nominees was less sensational than that of Katsuragi, though they all appeared by car the nominees form their respective movies arrived via the same one, particularly noticeable with the large group from forteca, who joked about it being impossible to not arrive in their "platoon". Whether this was truth, a stunt or a simple nod towards the Demonessian dislike for anything un-environmental was to be guessed.

Scattered among the well tailored suits was the odd evening dress that added a bit of colour to the otherwise grey and black affair.

The intermarines slowly moved up the red carpet, frequently pausing to sign autographs, smile for cameras or answer a few questions made by the present press.

Songs from the soundtracks of the nominees for Best Original Score were piped over the auditorium as guests were taking their seats. Once everyone had arrived in their places, the lights dimmed to the orchestral sounds of Forteca, which had not been nominated but was applauded for its use of contemporary music. Timed well with "Nie masz nad żołnierza dzielniejszego człeka", the song ended and the stage filled up with performers belting out the opening performance, a song written specifically for the event. In the lead were Eris Katsuragi, whose singing was mediocre despite being sincere, and her male co-host, who had a surprisingly good voice despite prior expectations. The performance lasted approximately five minutes and was reminiscent of large-scale musical pieces.

Both hosts panted slightly as the stage props were switched, a new backdrop was lowered from the ceiling, and a podium was moved in front of them. Eris smiled widely as her co-host said, "Good Evening, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to the First Annual Film Awards. Our country is very proud to host the event and I know the two of us are personally touched to be its hosts. However, before we get started on honoring this year's achievements, we would like to honor the memory of entertainers who are no longer with us. These women and men had a large influence on the industry through their dedication to their craft, their ability to entertain, and their ability to inspire. Let us now have a moment of silence."

A respectful piece was played over a montage of men and women who had died within the last decade. While the festival may be dedicated to films, writers, songwriters, performers, and any other major contributors to the industry were mentioned. It was a long list, including international entertainers, and appeared to be a heartfelt dedication. It was, however, still odd: Demonessians tended not to mourn their dead longer than a week due to religious reasons, so this was an important statement to the industry.

When the montage ended, Eris raised her head and took the mic. "Let's have a round of applause to celebrate their achievements," she said. When the noise died down, she continued in witty banter with her co-host, exchanging jokes and playful barbs as well as highlighting entertainment events of the year. For once, Eris seemed at ease with poking fun at herself and took it in stride. After several moments, they segued into the awards themselves, announcing the winners for the stunts categories. Surprisingly, Wolf Spirit won the award for Best Stunt Performance and Sachiko Rowena won Best Stunt Performer. Controversy had surrounded the inclusion of the categories, which the industry liked to downplay especially with the advent of computer generated effects, and the initial snub of Rowena, so these wins, regardless of who actually won the award, were a coup for the performers. Rowena's acceptance speech was initially very heartfelt, dedicating her performance to other performers who had died, but quickly segued into a diatribe against how performers were treated in the industry. Rowena's mic was cut off and she was escorted from the stage.

Eris and her co-host were initially hesitant to follow the rant, but Eris quickly changed the atmosphere by telling an anecdote wherein she'd nearly died. Eris was known to perform any stunt film insurers would allow her to do, such as high jumps or skydiving, and in her particular incident, she wasn't even performing a stunt. The pyrotechnics misfired during a scene of Mistress of Fire, catching her costume on fire and luckily only causing superficial burns. While her tone was light, alluding to the black humor of the situation, it could have been drawn from her story that she actually supported stunt workers.

Forteca swept the next two categories, earning wins in Best Visual Effects and Best Sound Editing, and taking home a third win in Best Cinematography. The Fox in the Dale stole Best Production Design, Best Original Score, Best Film Editing, Best Costume Design and Best Makeup and Hairstyling, placing its awards at five and causing speculation that it might also take home Best Picture; this seemed to be confirmed when it also won Best Original Song for "The Siren's Song" despite ample controversy surrounding its nomination.

As the event moved toward more "important" awards, the hosts took a break and a new production was put on as an intermission. Aelda Kuroi, the most prominent of the sirens as a successful stage actress, sang a shortened version of "The Siren's Song" which morphed into a medley of songs from the popular stage musical. In that production, Kuroi had actually played the Red-Haired Woman so it was an opportunity to compare her performance to that of Angelina Kirei.

After several minutes of clapping, the hosts returned to the stage. "Are you ready to continue?" Eris asked her co-host. When he answered affirmatively, she joked, "I'm not sure if I can. These heels are killing me. Let that be a lesson to you, ladies and gentlemen: comfort matters. Between these hot lights and these shoes, I'm going to have to make another appointment with my plastic surgeon!" She didn't look particularly pleased with that joke, but she continued. "We are starting to close on the ceremony. Do you feel the tension? We have all been anticipating these following categories. First off: Best Independent Film." The screens behind her displayed screen captures of important scenes in each nominee film and after reading the nominees and receiving the winning envelope, she hesitated for several seconds before reading it. With appropriate dramatic flair, she announced, "And the winner is Aniol Wolii." It was the first win for the film that evening, despite being up for several awards, and the relatively cheap film had done surprisingly well internationally, so its fans had expected for it to win in other categories.

OOC: I'm not sure who you'd like to do the acceptance speech. Maybe the screenwriter? I skipped over the other categories because I didn't figure a person who physically accept the award, but feel free to do an acceptance speech for any of them as well.

A look of surprise slowly turned to wide grins amongst the present cast and crew of “Aniol”, hands were shook and backs slapped before Filip Holowicz walked down and onto the stage. After shaking the hosts hands and kissing the air near Katsuragi’s ears, he stood at the podium holding onto the award.

- ‘Good evening, dobry wieczor, etcetera. What can I say? This is definitely a bit unexpected, after all we did have a lot of good films here and alas there can only be one to take the award. I shall not argue with the choice, I’ll leave that to the internet.’
- ‘I will, however, thank everybody who contributed in whatever way to turning a seemingly random collection of thoughts, musings and conversations born from doubt into a film that might just be worth something. Thank you.’

The next award was for Best Animated Feature and despite several nominees, there was no challenge for Through the Other Side. Hajime Lie, a gentleman entering his eighth decade, slowly made his way to the stage, helped along by screenwriter Helena Marek, who stood silently to the side as Lie gave his acceptance speech. "When I first read the script for Down the Rabbit Hole, I didn't know of Kindle Alis at all. I thought this wonderful work had come solely from the mind of Marek-was. But when I discovered Alis-mitsu's existence, I insisted upon talking to her. Despite her disease, she has the keenest little imagination and though she had difficulty differentiating reality, some of these characters are her friends. I wanted to do them justice."

He sighed and sadly added, "Schizophrenia is a very serious disease and it is very unfortunate that mental illness is dismissed in our modern world. Despite the accusations of exploitation, this documentary and the one before it bring warranted attention to this disease. It starts a dialogue and Alis-mitsu understands that. She may have been harassed and judged, but she wants to be the poster child for schizophrenia. Only with a face - a beautiful, intelligent, and innocent face - can we stop treating this disease as something to be ashamed of and hidden. Now, perhaps, we can confront the treatment of schizophrenia in this country and internationally and treat it as the disease that it is. That's all I wanted for Alis. Thank you." Lie nodded and slowly exited the stage.

When Down the Rabbit Hole was also announced as the Best Documentary Feature, both Lie and Marek declined to give another speech, hoping that Lie's prior speech would still stand. Lie, however, was invited to be the guest host for the Actor categories since Eris was one of the nominees. Angelina Kirei was graceful in her acceptance speech for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, thanking her mother, her family, and screenwriter Helena Marek, who'd been her college roommate and inspired her to start acting in the first place. With a serious message on acceptance and sincere gratitude preceding her speech, Eris Katsuragi was more subdued than she'd intended to be. Her win as Best Actress in a Leading Role was the second such award she'd ever won, the first and only other one being for her breakout role in Mistress of Fire and she accepted the award with uncharacteristic grace and dedicated her win to the crew of Wolf Spirit.

When it came time to announced Best Actor in a Supporting Role, Lie was measured in his speech, listing each nominee with respect and trying to pronounce each name properly despite his accent. However, he did not hesitate or inject any drama as he read the winner: "For his role in Aniol Wolii, Szymon Kowalski." Lie offered his hand when Kowalski came up on stage.

Kowalski shook hands with Lie before taking his place behind the podium.

- 'Well. I thought seeing the movie I had a part in making was big, it's just blown away by actually having your name read out. So to all you people who saw me earlier and thought "Who is that person and how did he get past security?", now you know.'

Grinning he went on.

- 'So many excellent actors nominated and I found it hard to believe that my name was among them. I would like to say that I was bound to triumph as I am that good but I am not, no triumph is ever just one persons. A lot of people put a lot of sweat into Aniol and I am just one of those cogs, so to the academy and my coworkers thank you. This is the realization of a huge life dream. I am truly and honestly thrilled to be here with this award. If my work somehow made people’s lives a little better, if only for the duration of the film, then I feel like it has been a success. You all have given me the chance to live my passion, and I thank you all sincerely from the bottom of my heart.'

Lie returned to the stage and diligently read the names of the nominees for Best Actor in a Leading Role. His voice faltered as he read the winner and Ian Des exchanged concerned words with the older animator before shaking his hands; Lie simply had a dry mouth and water was provided for him as Des took the stand. Des paused for several seconds before beginning his speech. "There isn't much I can say up here that will do my thoughts justice. I'm truly humbled by this award and it was an honor to even be considered alongside the high caliber actors who were nominated. I will treasure this. Thank you!" Des again checked with Lie, who was exiting the stage.

Eris Katsuragi and her co-host were retaking their positions. Based solely on awards won, The Fox in the Dale was a favorite for the win of Best Picture. However, it had tough competition in Forteca, a serious period piece, and Aniol Wolii, which challenged its audience with dark philosophical nature. The two hosts exchanged banter again in a bid to stretch out time and build tension. This time as the nominees were named, each host gave a short summary of the movie in addition to the clips that played in the background, and they discussed its merits. Finally, Eris took the honor of announcing the winner: "The winner for Best Picture is... Forteca!"

OOC: I just realized I skipped Best Director, but oh well. I'm not editing. It was supposed to be before the acting categories. ;)

Jacek Lipski took the stage to claim the award for best film. A veteran filmmaker this wasn't his first time collecting an award for his work. Some claimed that perhaps he was a bit too old to be making films, that his skill was slipping, if he was bothered by that there was little to show it as he stood behind the podium calmly and made his speech.

- 'Thank you very much. Thank you very, very much. I want to acknowledge the other films; they are great films, which have as much a right to be up here as we do. I want to acknowledge them for what they did and thank them and many of them who didn't even get nominated this year.
I want to thank everyone who let us do his story. Thank you. I thank you everyone in the movie, on the movie, worked on the movie, did anything with this movie I thank you all.
I want to thank my wife for working on our marriage. It is work but it's the best kind of work and there's no one I'd rather work with on it. And I'd just like to say, I was here 15 years ago or something and I had no idea what I was doing. I stood out here in front of you all and really just a kid. I went out and I never thought I would be back here. And I am, because of so many of you who are here tonight, because of this Academy, because of so many wonderful people who extended themselves to me.
I want to thank them and I want to thank what they taught me, which is that you have to work harder than you think you possibly can. You can't hold grudges. It's hard but you can't hold grudges. And it doesn't matter how you get knocked down in life because that's going to happen. All that matters is you gotta get up.'

Eris and her co-host took the podium back as Lipski exited the stage. After an extended applause, they ended the show with a summary of the show, the surprises of some of the awards, and even commentary on the show's performances themselves. "Thank you, everyone, for attending tonight's awards. We hope to see you next year!" Eris said into the microphone and exchanged bows with her co-host and waving at the audience as the curtains closed in front of her.

Some of the attendees made more graceful exits than others and though the recessional was quicker than the walk down the red carpet, a few of the more ambitious (or enthusiastic) reporters still managed to catch a few of the attendees before they made their exit. Eris, of course, loved the attention and during her interview gave another speech that was more along the lines of her original intentions. Her speech was charismatic while also flirtatious and had an undertone of her normal arrogance. She coyly avoided answering questions about her relationship with her new beau, responding only when the answers were titillating. She gave a brief promotion for her next film before disappearing into her sports car and rocketing off, leaving the monstrous roar of her engine in her wake. She, like many others, was headed off to the after-party.

"Mr. Skomlak!" the actor heard shouted as he left. "Some people are already saying you were robbed of Best Actor. What's your response? How do you feel about Mr. Kowalski winning Best Supporting Actor?"

"Mr. Lipski! Forteca didn't do nearly as well as predicted. Why do you think that is?"

"Mr. Kowalski! How do you feel about your win?"

Skomlak turned to the reporter with a polite smile,

- 'The academy decided that Mr Des deserved the award more than I did, and the mans performance was deserving. But if there are people out there that think I should have got it than what can I say but "Thank you for you're support guys, there is always the next film". As for "Szymek" getting best supporting? Despite what he may say he deserves it no buts about it. However if he does brag too much about I may be forced to kick him.'

He finished with a chuckle.

Lipski neither smiled or frowned at the question merely replied in his steady voice.

- 'The obvious answer would be because we did not conduct ourselves to the same standards as other films in specific categories. However good cinema is the sum of its parts and how they are put together and if the academy thinks I still know how to put them together in such a way that it makes a good film than what is there to complain about?'

Kowalski turned to the reporter with a grin in place as he answered.

- 'Every actor wants to be in this situation, walking away from the ceremony with an award so it feels great, I've pinched myself several times to make sure it isn't a dream and I have to get up soon. It feels good. Maybe tomorrow I'll come up with something more intelligent to say but right now that's all I can tell you. It feels great.'

*

- 'Ms Kirei! Feel like sharing any thoughts on your win this evening?'

- '"Through the Other Side" netted itself best documentary and best animated, quite the achievement! At the same time "Best independent" somehow slipped by. Any thoughts you'd like to share?'

- '"Fox in the Dale" won so many awards this evening, congratulations by the way for that, and yet "best film" somehow eluded it, any thoughts?'

- 'Mr Des! Best Actor is in your hands, how are you feeling?'

- 'Ms Rowena! Congratulations on your award! And yet there are those that claim that "Best Stunt Performer" has no place amongst the awards, would you like to say anything to those people?'
