Recapturing a Fugitive

In an unspecified Third World Country...

Crafty Roukai was mostly satisfied with the way her life had gone so far. She was in her late twenties, naturally pretty, and athletic, but best of all, she worked with a mercenary group called the Hessi. She would have preferred a private military company, as they provided better pay and benefits, but her current situation and contacts only provided her with so many resources. She was still wanted by Demonessian authorities for her role in the 2011 ITC Patin attack, among other reasons, and so she could only be involved in low visibility operations.

Even if she was living in what some would consider terrible conditions, it wasn't too bad. During her time with the Apostates, she had discovered she had a talent for destruction and her current line of work allowed her to explore it. The Hessi were enforcers for a local warlord and though she lived in a misogynistic environment, she had earned fear by reputation: she didn't shy away from brutal techniques to quell the local population and she had disemboweled the first man who had tried to take her by force. While she was not in a position of power, she was respected.

That wasn't to say she hadn't suffered. Her athletic build had become slimmer since food in the Watari region was scarce, even for the Hessi. News traveled slowly, so she couldn't stay informed on her wanted status, and the equipment she used was nowhere near the standards she had used as Special Tactics. She had acquired a few scars along the way and malaria had nearly killed her the first month in Watari.

She now lived in the Hessi compound, which was a collection of six buildings - more accurately a collection of sheds - and smaller huts that also housed Hessi families. The compound was walled with tin and barbed wire and had an armed guard in a tower. Crafty should have been boarded with another mercenary, but after disemboweling the last one she ended up housed with a young pregnant girl named Darli; Crafty didn't know her story since Darli didn't speak English, but she strongly suspected Darli wasn't here willingly. The Hessi compound was approximately ten miles from the nearest town, a goat farming village with no name, and fifteen miles from Warlord Ekard, who lived in a much better guarded compound in an isolated mountain. Tomorrow, Crafty would take the Jeep with a few other Hessi and head up to Ekard's place to replace the guards. She liked it better up there - there was clean water - and she planned to catch Ekard's eye, but she never saw him.

Topaz smiled. "<I did not read much as a child. I did other things,>" she replied. "<What other punishments did your parents give you?>"

As she asked the question, her eyes were drawn toward the television, which was displaying that Leghnian troops had crossed Isaad's borders. There had been suspect activity in the past, but this was clearly an invasion force, regardless of which news entity was reporting it; to Buvaryst and its country, this was terrible news, but Leghnian supporters would rejoice. The Leghnian news station, to which the television was currently tuned, stated that the Leghnian Liberation Force was heading toward Buvaryst with all due haste in order to free the capital, establish a base, and then spread outward. She doubted that was the actual plan, but regardless, Buvaryst was a day, maybe eighteen hours, from the border and was an important target. It also meant that the country's defense forces would also move onto Buvaryst and the Isaadian revolutionary forces would have to change their tactics and prepare for a siege. The bar had fallen silent and when the report ended, many patrons paid their tabs or simply left.

Topaz blinked. "<I'm sorry. You were saying?>" she politely asked Erryn. She needed to figure out her own plan of action.

Erryn shrugged. "<Chores mostly. Anything that would keep me away from a book that I wanted to read. Sometimes they'd give me extra studies instead.>" He looked at the TV and nodded. "<You know, it might be a good time to leave. You could come with us?>"

Topaz frowned. "<Maybe. Now is a good time to leave,>" she replied. "<How will you leave? I know refugees have gone along the roads, but it is not safe. I also fear Leghnia will not stop with Isaad.>"

"<Well, our plan was to exit through the western border with Maloria. There are places that haven't locked down the border to refugees yet and if we're careful, won't have to worry about crossing. From there we could head wherever we wanted.>"

Topaz considered the idea. She knew she needed to leave Isaad before the fighting got worse and Buvaryst would be the center of the conflict as it had been the regional seat of power, which was now held by those loyal to the central government. It was convenient and she could stay with them until the border. She didn't know much about Maloria, but she did not want to head to Fenwick if that was their ultimate destination. "<I will go with you,>" she replied.

Erryn nodded. "<Then I suppose that I should go make some preparations.>" He scribbled down an address. "<Meet us here, after work.>"

Topaz smirked; there wasn't much reason to finish her shift if she was leaving the country aside from loyalty to the owner. Still, she'd finish her shift and take her pay from the till; it would make sense to have some travel money, even if it was likely the money would soon become worthless. Then she nodded. "<I will be done at three and I need to pick up things from home. I will meet you there afterward,>" she agreed.

When Topaz arrived at the location that Erryn had provided, she found several people standing around looking slightly nervous, including one on crutches being fussed over by a woman. A few of the group carried packs and other travelling gear, which looked a bit worse for wear. Erryn waved her over and extended a hand when she walked over. "Glad you could make it. Oleksandr and Joakim have been discussing the logistics of our transit across the border."

The first thing Topaz did when she got home was check on her backpack to assure that it had sufficient supplies. It had several changes of clothes, a rudimentary first aid kit, and a handful of survival kit items, such as flint for starting a fire. She filled her canteen and packed a few items of food into a cloth before transferring that into her backpack as well. Finally, she unholstered her pistol, which she'd been wearing beneath her clothes all day, and performed a function check before loading placing it on the table. She added to her backpack a few extra rounds of ammunition, of which she had few, and then quickly changed. She kept her head covering but otherwise changed into clothes more comfortable for hiking and boots. She reholstered her pistol, covering it with her jacket, and tucked a knife into her sleeve. Her time as a mule taught her she needed a last defense, so it was little more than sharpened glass, but it would still bite.

She tested the weight of the backpack: heavy, but it was still something she could carry over long distances. She strapped it to herself, took one last look around the room, and left.

She nodded to Erryn when she arrived. "<What are we doing?>" she asked.

Erryn pointed to what looked like a small produce box truck. "<We'll be taking that for a bit to save on the walk, but we'll be crossing the border on foot.>"
