In an unspecified Third World Country... Crafty Roukai was mostly satisfied with the way her life had gone so far. She was in her late twenties, naturally pretty, and athletic, but best of all, she worked with a mercenary group called the Hessi. She would have preferred a private military company, as they provided better pay and benefits, but her current situation and contacts only provided her with so many resources. She was still wanted by Demonessian authorities for her role in the 2011 ITC Patin attack, among other reasons, and so she could only be involved in low visibility operations. Even if she was living in what some would consider terrible conditions, it wasn't too bad. During her time with the Apostates, she had discovered she had a talent for destruction and her current line of work allowed her to explore it. The Hessi were enforcers for a local warlord and though she lived in a misogynistic environment, she had earned fear by reputation: she didn't shy away from brutal techniques to quell the local population and she had disemboweled the first man who had tried to take her by force. While she was not in a position of power, she was respected. That wasn't to say she hadn't suffered. Her athletic build had become slimmer since food in the Watari region was scarce, even for the Hessi. News traveled slowly, so she couldn't stay informed on her wanted status, and the equipment she used was nowhere near the standards she had used as Special Tactics. She had acquired a few scars along the way and malaria had nearly killed her the first month in Watari. She now lived in the Hessi compound, which was a collection of six buildings - more accurately a collection of sheds - and smaller huts that also housed Hessi families. The compound was walled with tin and barbed wire and had an armed guard in a tower. Crafty should have been boarded with another mercenary, but after disemboweling the last one she ended up housed with a young pregnant girl named Darli; Crafty didn't know her story since Darli didn't speak English, but she strongly suspected Darli wasn't here willingly. The Hessi compound was approximately ten miles from the nearest town, a goat farming village with no name, and fifteen miles from Warlord Ekard, who lived in a much better guarded compound in an isolated mountain. Tomorrow, Crafty would take the Jeep with a few other Hessi and head up to Ekard's place to replace the guards. She liked it better up there - there was clean water - and she planned to catch Ekard's eye, but she never saw him. |

Topaz nodded. "<Only those who have little choice or have better reasons stay in a war zone,>" she replied. She looked around and took a seat on the floor, tucking her backpack beside her. Her pistol dug into her side, but she figured she could not adjust it without drawing attention to it. She also wondered how long it would take the air to grow stale and hot and she imagined it would be quickly with the number of people in the truck with her. |

Surprisingly, the truck had good ventilation via small slits in the sides of the truck disguised as the cooling coil for a refrigeration unit. While it was warm due to the number of bodies in the space, there was a slight breeze while the truck was in motion. Erryn shrugged. "<A shame people cannot behave themselves better. Oh well, it is an unfortunate reality we live in.>" |

Topaz nodded; she wasn't sure what else to say. She adjusted her scarf around her head so it would allow more airflow, but she didn't plan on removing it unless it got very hot. |

It was a relatively short time before they reached the checkpoint and the passengers all sat and waited while the sounds of a cursory inspection happened on the other side of the fake wall, barely audible over the idle of the truck engines. The scrape of a crate could be heard as the driver passed a small few boxes to the checkpoint workers. Erryn shook his head quietly. It was surprising at times what a few fresh fruit and vegetables could get you in a war torn area. With the sound of the doors shutting, the truck rumbled further on down the road. "<Guess we're past the first hurdle, eh?>" |

Topaz nodded again. At first she had been vigilant, straining to hear every sound and intently examining it for a threat, but as they drove on and she realized the sounds of the war - formerly distant from the city - were now normal background noises. She tensed again when they slowed and stopped at the checkpoint and was only now starting to relax. When she had first fled the authorities she had traveled on her own, first stealing the drug running vehicle and then making her way on foot or by other means. It was the first time she had willingly traveled with a group of any kind. "<How long?>" She again wished she could speak the language better. It was hard to express complex ideas in the vocabulary she possessed. |

"<I would say another twenty minutes, give or take a few,>" Erryn replied. |

Topaz tilted her head. "<We will be near the border in twenty minutes?>" she asked with confusion. |

Erryn shook his head. "<No, we're almost to the part where we have to hike the rest, remember?>" |

"<Of course. I think the air in here has made it a bit hard to think,>" Topaz replied. She didn't think it had been that long, but without seeing the scenery pass it was difficult to gauge how long they had been driving. |

Erryn shrugged slightly. "<It is a little stuffy, but not as bad as I expected it to be with this many people.>" He leaned his head back and closed his eyes. The truck rattled along the road for another few minutes before slowly coming to a halt. The familiar sounds of boxes sliding around in the truck could be heard and then the false wall slid out of the way. The passengers were waved out and Erryn hopped down before extending a hand to Topaz. |
