Feoras is a land of great beauty and great sorrow. In ancient times, the isolated island was its own world, warring, celebrating, and living by its own rules. Its first contact with the outside world was violent, but it resulted in the assimilation of the invader culture into its own. However, this would not be the trend and the next encounter ended with Feoras being the assimilated party. For centuries, it was subjugated by Demonessian masters until the modern age brought with it change: enormous destruction, followed by brief freedom and then patronizing stewardship.

The island suffered from poverty, but there was still beauty to be found. While its five remaining ethnicities live in an enforced peace, the tourist areas benefit from the economic boon and generate a false sense of wealth. Tourists are attracted by Mauna Inaka, the volcanic center of the island, and the black sand beaches she generated. The gentle slope of the continental shelf allows swimmers to wade into a seemingly endless sea and walk up to boats parked in the shallows. Its coral reefs are untouched in certain parts of the island and the fauna found there are unmatched.

With the economy centered around the tourism trade, it is hard to leave the main areas. However, the adventurous tourist may find other ways to pass the time. The Genfiotes in the south control the tourism areas, making sure they are clean and presentable, as do their neighbors in Ahi'iana. The Genfiotes, however, present a curiosity: their religious leaders, known as the Undying. These leaders dress entirely in grey and cover their faces with a mask and veil. When they speak, they speak as if they are not an individual; they speak as if they are from a collective consciousness, which can be unnerving for some. In Fuwoku, one can find the farmers, who toil away in the dirt and respect animals as much as humans. For the adventurous, there is Kain, a land of warriors where the leader is determined through battle prowess. While Mpali represents the industrialized portion of the island, Isis certainly fairs the best as the seat of the former colonial masters.

Humanitarians may seek to provide relief from poverty and criminals may find a new foothold, but tourists, explorers, and travelers may find adventure.

Kakia pointed behind her. The view was obscured entirely by the canopy over the patio, but as she spoke it was evident she spoke of the large volcano at the center of the island. Aside from being the centerpiece and creator of the island, it was large enough that a ring of clouds faintly clung to its summit year-round. It was an active volcano, erupting one to three times a year, but they were always gentle flows due to the frequent relief of geothermic pressure. "It is the volcano. It is named after the Fuwoi goddess, so it is the Mountain of Inaka, but we all revere Her in this aspect because She created this island for us. It is a gentle mountain and you may see lava or even an eruption."

The twins both followed Kakia's finger to the volcano, and then listened politely to her explanation. However, the excitement on Vlad's face was evident to see when she mentioned lava or a mountain; his eyes widened and his grin grew even wider.

"How often does it erupt?" he asked excitedly once Kakia had finished speaking, "Do you zink it is likely we will get to see it?"

Kakia shrugged. "It depends, but I have seen it erupt as many times as five a year and sometimes it only erupts once, but it is a slow eruption. It flows. It is not violent like the movies."

"Well I assumed it was a slow eruption," Vlad laughed, "If it was a violent explosion, zen why would you mention us getting to see it?"

"True, most would be more concerned about getting away from an eruption like zat," Andrei added, "Not about getting to see it."

"Anyway, how long is ze drive?" Vlad asked, "And do ze eruptions usually last a long time? I mean, if it erupts would we be able to leave and arrive zere in time to see it?"

Kakia nodded. "It is not very far by car and even if it were, we would still have plenty of time to see the flow. Some eruptions last for days. It really depends on how often it has erupted that year and how thin the lava is. There are tours that take us along safe paths above the lava and you may get fairly close without danger. They have, ano, volcanologists who guide and study the mountain."

"Zat is great zen," Vlad said with a grin, "We can just wait to see if it erupts, and if it does not we can always just visit it a few days before we leave."

"It does make sense zat zere would be volcanologists up zere studying ze mountain considering how close it is," Andrei said, rubbing his chin in thought, "And while it is safe, I can only imagine ze damage ze lava could cause if it flowed down into a developed area."

"Despite our best efforts, lava continues to this day to flow into developed areas. Most often it is simply a road or a lone structure, but it has flowed into the villages below. I don't believe that has happened within the last few decades though. We built a sort of retaining wall and channels to help guide the flow."

"Zat is good, zough it must be hard trying to find a permanent solution," Andrei said.

"Lava is just one more zing zat is beautiful but dangerous," Vlad said, "Zough it is probably a fair bit more dangerous zan most ozer zings like zat."

"The earthquakes and hurricanes are usually more dangerous," Kakia replied. "In the past, before stone buildings, we lived in reed huts. Even then we generally had enough warning to escape the lava flow before anyone was injured. It was only during very bad eruptions with lots of ash that we would lose anyone. The mountain is simply giving us more land to live on for our expanding population and renew the nutrients in the soil. You may not realize it, but volcanoes provide very fertile soil. That is why our food tastes so good."

The waitress returned and asked them if they were ready to order their meal.

"La naiba," Andrei said, realizing that he hadn't looked at the menu once since they had ordered their drinks, "Give me a minute, sorry."

Vlad chuckled as his brother scanned the menu, trying to quickly decide on what exactly he wanted to eat. Vlad, however, had already chosen a meal, though he had chosen it at random. He quickly informed the waitress of what he wanted, which appeared to be some sort of fish. "Sorry if I mispronounced zat," he said as he finished up, then glanced over at Andrei, who was still scanning the menu, "So, decided on what you want to eat yet?"

"No," Andrei replied flatly, then looked up at Kakia, "What do you suggest?"
