In 2002, a civil war broke out between two factions in Demoness: the Loyalists, who supported Empress Jia Li, and the Traditionalists, who supported Princess Hikari. While the beginning of the conflict had roots in Jia Li's denouncement of the religion, it grew into active debate about the country's policies and its place in the modern world. In the end, Hikari's forces lost and she fled the country, but her supporters continued to fight against the perceived heresy left on the throne. While the resistance took many forms, its most active and controversial branch was the Apostates, who were officially condemned by Princess Hikari for being too violent. The Apostates, founded by college student Leeda Mailin in 2008, have carried out various attacks across the nation, from setting fires to the 2011 ITC Patin attack, which released a nerve gas in a residential building and killed 53 and injured over six thousand. While Leeda and the public Apostate leader, Rowena Mira, were arrested in December of 2011 and a concentrated effort was made to arrest Apostates, the organization did not cease to exist. Instead, it splintered into more dangerous groups: the Apostates, who continued Leeda's work; the Heralds of Qayima, a violent doomsday cult; Anathema, the group who seized the Apostates' weapons caches and smuggling operations; and the Purists, racists who want to rid Demoness of outsiders by any means necessary. However, they are typically still referred to by the umbrella term "Apostate" when speaking to outsiders since the government wishes to hide the extent of the problem. Since we have not established diplomatic ties, assume for this purpose we're on good terms. CLASSIFIED CABLES SENT DISCREETLY AND SEPARATELY TO EACH GOVERNMENT'S INTELLIGENCE AGENCY: After extensive intelligence gathering, our government has come to believe there are members of the terrorist organization, the Apostates, within your nation. "I-" Gin's eyes flitted to the guard's positions and how they reacted to her presence and movements and she quickened her breathing under the pretense of being frightened. "What's going on?" She pulled away from Tezai and stood; her hands were still tight on the silk. "Why won't anyone answer me?" --- As Topaz scanned for an escape route, she spotted a sniper in his nest and knew enough about tactics to know what he was. Why hadn't he fired? She'd provided him with a perfect shot when she barged onto the roof. She heard footsteps on the fire escape and knew she didn't have much time to ponder her good fortune. There were two ways could end up: surrender or a fire fight that would assure her death. A movie entered her mind, an action flick she and her sister had watched long ago, and incubated an idea. She stood, sprinted to the edge, leapt-- And landed with a grimace on the next roof. It wouldn't take long for the NatPol to reconfigure their perimeter and the sniper wouldn't even have to move to follow her path. Still, she ran and took another leap, barely making this rooftop. Her path was not easy, and it looked like the tall buildings might end in another two blocks, but she had little choice and continued. Let's see you catch me, she thought.
Hana Heili and Arashi Suzuki were nothing short of clones. Already blessed by biology to be living mirrors, the twins had practiced for years to have identical mannerisms, inflections, and thoughts; they were so close in action that their colleagues, and sometimes even Hana's husband, swore they utilized telepathy or some sort of witchcraft, being attuned to one another beyond normal twins. But as their thoughts were in sync, their personalities and skill sets were complementary: Hana was charismatic and had a sharp mind and technical skills, being the brains of the operation whereas her sister was more physical, slinking through the shadows, and acted as her bodyguard and handler. Named for the colloquialism "hana ni arashi", literally meaning "flowers in a storm", they indeed brought misfortune to happy dictatorships. The twins were ideal: neither too Cine or too Shuzoku, pretty enough to help but plain enough to be forgotten afterward, and strove to adapt to their environment. To enter Euphraties, they dressed to their personalities - colorful for Hana, dark for Arashi - but in deference to local customs and costumes. Both wore contacts to hide their violet eyes, the only indication of their true heritage as Demonessians, and Hana wore a wig. She made sure they looked as Euphrati as possible while downplaying their identicalness. NDAISE intercepted a communique a few days ago from Roukai requesting support while promising an alliance with a local anti-Demonessian group to her Apostate contacts. NDAISE sent back tentative permission to set up a meeting and so knew the general whereabouts of Roukai. Hana and Arashi were to gain her confidence and access her database before apprehending her; they were not to engage Euphrati targets until permission had been explicitly granted unless they risked the loss of Roukai into enemy hands. When the plane landed, they passed through customs and headed to set up base before stalking their prey. OOC: The woman in the picture is actually Irish-Japanese, but she appears fairly white. I couldn't find a reference to the ethnicity of your people, so I assume they're Egyptian. Likewise, assume the twins have darkened their skin to fit in. --- Crafty Roukai was not the type to blend in: she was naturally pretty, with bright eyes and fair skin, and that was why she had broke with the High Guardsmen, whose job was to be visible but in the background, like her sister. She kept her dark hair short - a daring statement in a society that put so much emphasis on a long mane - and craved attention. However, her upbringing had given her limited options and she became a policeman after leaving the High Guardsmen, but her expertise quickly got her assigned to Special Tactics teams, where she gained the recognition she felt she deserved. However, something soured in her and she became restless. After attending a secret Apostate meeting, she discovered what it was she had been missing: destruction, and she had a talent for it. Her thirst was sated by the many terrorist attacks the Apostates carried out, but she cared not for their cause; given the chance, she would jump ship for the highest bidder. She was an agent of chaos. When Crafty fled Demoness, she knew she had to go into hiding and curbed her hunger as she changed her appearance. She had made a few contacts in Euphraties; while she was not trusted, they had a common enemy and she gained "allies", though no friends. One of these allies warned her of Demoness' slimy tendrils slithering into Euphraties to hunt her and her immediate thought was to relish the challenge, but her survival instincts kicked in. She grabbed supplies, left a "gift" for any who blundered into her apartment, and went to ground. --- Aelda Masaki was young, only just entering her thirties, but she had learned much beneath her mentors, the formidable Lady Katsuragi and her patient protege, Secretary Akagi, and she was slowly being groomed to replace them. The daughter of an ambassador, she had diplomacy in her blood, but it did not come naturally. While she was not as clever as her mentors, her easy smile and comforting presence compensated where her words failed. Per Katsuragi's advice, she wore modern office dress - a cream pantsuit - as she waited with two Jade Watchmen. Her escorts, normally dressed in black and green to identify their function, wore plain clothes and stood discreetly behind her. When Prince Uruk and Dastan disembarked, they were greeted by a solemn, deep bow and a small present - a normal Demonessian tradition to greet guests and formalize that they were under the host's protection. In this case, it was a bottle of wine from Cetatsenia, which was hopefully perceived as a neutral country and not meant to communicate a hidden insult. "Your Grace, milord, Adoni Katsuragi sends her greetings. I apologize on her behalf for the modest reception, but it was indicated this was to be a discreet visit. The Ministry of Diplomacy has made arrangements to accommodations and private travel, if you will receive it. Adoni Katsuragi will meet you tomorrow at the conference, but in the meantime I am at your disposal." She paused, realizing she had not introduced herself, so she bowed again. "I am Masaki Aelda, Undersecretary of Diplomacy." |
