Solaris, Kisato, Demoness Solaris is a city that never sleeps between international trade, with local and overseas markets opening twelve hours apart, and an active night life centered around movie stars and artists. Being situated on the Blood River has made it a flourishing trade city and it is often called the Gateway of Demoness. It is the second largest city in the nation and is home to Joint Base Diomasachi-Solaris, which overlooks Solaris Bay. During the day, hundreds of ships and planes pass through their respective ports to process international travelers. Traffic hums across the high-speed rails that run trains on precise schedules, though Solaris is one of the few cities that also accommodates automobile traffic. Millions of feet travel its streets and footpaths daily and its skyscrapers are among the most sophisticated in the world: not only are they designed to be environmentally friendly, generating electricity and food through byzantine hydroponics setups, but they also facilitate foot traffic by providing skyways between buildings. While the city grew organically, several attempts to renovate and redirect streets have been made to correct it to a grid structure, though the oldest buildings were spared and have become historical monuments. Though built from steel and concrete, Solaris integrates rather than destroys its natural surroundings in accordance with the country's staunch environmental policy. From skyscrapers to city streets, from the outskirts to the heart of the city, the natural world can be found side by side with the modern world. Chitaels roam freely through the streets, going about their daily business no different from their human counterparts, but the streets are kept clean, both from dirt and from crime by an alert police force. ![]() ![]() When night falls, the bustle of the day merges with the flamboyance and extravagance of the night life. Solaris is the capital of the Demonessian film and theatre industries; it is lesser known for its contribution to the music industry, comedy circuit, and fine arts, but they have a large presence within the city's heart. Shows and film premiers open in the evening and performers have their own industry to cater to them; not only do clubs and bars stay open into the wee morning hours, but some costumers, caterers, technicians, and other specialists have night hours solely to support these industries. Solaris is a large cultural center, both of historical significance and having the largest non-Demonessian population. Museums are allotted their own section of the city alongside colleges where international students attend. Foreigners have business headquarters in Solaris and several foreign holidays are also celebrated throughout the year, but the less affluent immigrants are typically found in District Kaibara near the docks; this district is usually hidden from international investors for fear of insulting them and those that stray too far into Demonessian-only neighborhoods may hear racist comments just outside earshot. The First Annual World's Fair, sponsored by the Surudhannor Conglomerate, is being hosted in the Historic Madeline Hotel and Convention Center. Spacious and extravagant, it is clear that no expense is spared within its walls and one must simply ask to receive - nothing is impossible. Despite Demonessian restrictions on space, the Madeline's rooms are practically independent houses and its lobby could swallow a football field with room to spare. The floors of the lobby and halls are marble inlaid with polished brass and a blue stone that gives the appearance of lapis lazuli; its plush carpets are softer than some mattresses. Attendants seem to have a sixth sense and anticipate requests, but quietly disappear when no longer needed. The air is filled with excitement in the convention hall, which is across the street from the Madeline, and unevenly spaced booths line the convention floor. A conservative floor plan had been established early in planning, but it was soon realized that some booths needed more space than others, either for the size of displays or for safety during demonstrations. This organic result only contributes to the anticipation as dividers hide what's around the corner or reveal tantalizing portions of projects, like a sultry woman teasing a beau from across the bar. Each company or country in attendance has been invited to present to the audience halfway through the three-day event for a demonstration and a question and answer session. International Genetics, more widely known as InGen, set up a grand booth with its research daughter company, BioTech, displaying its many medical procedures and accomplishments. While not quite an international household name, InGen dabbles in medical technology and advancements, GMOs (genetically modified organisms), and genetic manipulation, and though the latter is severely restricted in Demoness, there were examples from its overseas offices. The walls displayed wide pictures of GMO corn fields, a robotic arm replacement, and several smiling children, a PR shot from an epidemic InGen helped cure years earlier. A young, mousy woman, stood nervously next to a display with an expression of utter helplessness on her face; she didn't know what to do with her hands. Her companion next to her had a more relaxed posture and a smile on his face. They were approximately the same age, though his attitude seemed to shave years off when compared to his fidgeting coworker. "I don't know if I can do this," Ryoko sighed. She adjusted her pantsuit for the third time, pulling down the jacket and straightening her blouse. Jared Kanzaka smiled. "Relax, Ellia-was. It's just like giving a lecture," he assured her. "I don't like giving lectures either," she griped and sighed again. This was nothing like briefing the DDC (Department of Disease Control). "You know the material." He shrugged. "Pretend you're talking to new employees." He looked around curiously, anxious to explore, but he couldn't leave Ryoko until she'd calmed down. The booth next to them was slightly smaller, but no less impressive. There was a larger display of the robotic arm from the InGen booth beside which stood a man with a remote control and a laptop. The arm was certainly sophisticated, allowing the joints of the fingers to move individually and the dexterity was improved over older models. The attendant was a fairly good-looking man in his mid-thirties; he wore jeans, a t-shirt, an over-shirt, and a slightly bored expression on his face. He seemed to prefer to stay in the background, which was fine for his companion, a slightly older red-haired man with a large, enthusiastic grin on his face. He had taken off his suit jacket, hanging it over a nearby chair, and rolled up his sleeves. He was excited to meet his peers and when he spoke to people that day, he would speak as if they were the only person he'd spoken to; he would be certain to speak to anyone who stopped to exchange information and glean ideas from the minds assembled here. He would be the most recognizable in the Demonessian booths because he was Dr. Robert Pendergast, the CEO of ITC and a notorious playboy. ITC, officially known as International Technologies Corporation, was the company behind the latest developments in artificial intelligence and robotics. Though not quite there yet, its flagship is the MAGI (Mutable Artificial Genuine Intelligence) Project, which optimistically seeks to automate the country by 2070 using self-aware computers; the majority of its funding goes toward the project and its income is derived from the developments it makes. ITC is complemented by TechGate, which displayed its research regarding nanotechnology. Last minute adjustments are being made by every vendor and the convention is set to open very soon. |
