To My Fellow Leaders,

In the interests of continuing peace and close relations, you are cordially invited to a three day ball commencing Saturday, 21 September at 2100 at the Sacred Palace. Families are welcome, but be advised that some official rituals observed during the Autumnal Equinox may not be suitable for small children.

Please RSVP as soon as possible so appropriate accommodations may be prepared for your arrival.

Sincerely,
Lawspeaker Beowulf Corbmac

The Intermarines returned the offered handshakes with handshakes of their own while throwing in a bow. The result of several centuries of diplomatic efforts to discover a motion that would serve to satisfy Demonessian protocol while not appearing servitile, not an easy thing to do. Faint smiles appeared at the decent Leszy which called for a similar gesture.

-‘Daemonesu-kami, it is an honour to be here. My impression? It is interesting as to how these people manage to fit in their sorroundings while not losing their Intermarine heritage. In short, the impression is positive as it bodes well, your Imperial Majesty.’

With a look down Moscicki offered an apolegetic gesture,

- ‘’I feel I should apologize to the young ones that there is no one of age they could hold a conversation with but my youngest is twice their age while my grandson is only in its third year.’
"We appreciate the sentiment nonetheless," Elisa replied proudly; she was already beginning to understand that her words had weight.

"What are your children like?" Kieran asked shyly. Though they had recently begun studying the Great Wars, this wasn't what had precipitated the question but rather simple curiosity about life outside their normal social circle. Unlike his sister, his path was not set and if she deemed it so, he would get nothing when he became an adult, just like his Aunt Hikari.

Gavril nodded at Jia Li, a sad smile on his face as well. "I zank you for taking ze time to say so in person," he said, his speech slightly accented. Then his smile changed once more into a happy one, "But let us not talk of zings like zat for now. Now it is time for ze ball, of which it is an honour to be here." And with that he offered his hand to the Empress, as well as the other Demonessians assembled.

While his face showed happiness, he still felt a twinge of sadness at the mention of his father. As well as bitterness. His father hadn't exactly been the doting type, quite the opposite in fact. He left his children in the hands of nannies and tutors whilst he was busy with his work. While Gavril now understood the magnitude work involved in running a country, he still didn't forgive his father. In fact, he considered his father the exact opposite of what he wanted to be to any children he may ever have. But despite this, he couldn't bring him to hate the man, like some of his elder siblings. He was still his father after all.

"Of course," Jia Li replied with a smile. "And I'm glad you could come." After she gently accepted his hand, she turned and introduced the others with her. Her husband and Beowulf were firm in their handshakes, while Elisa's and Kieran's were as soft as their mother's.

"It is an important part of the year for us," Jia Li continued, "but rather quiet for the rest of the world. Since we usually close our borders for our celebrations, I thought it might be better to invite others to join the festivities this year. Do you have any sort of similar celebrations?"

There were polite smiles at Elisa's response, perhaps a subtle reminder to the Intermarines that this was a monarchy and the young girl was, providing nothing happened, the future Empress. Her brother, by contrast, seemed to be more "childlike" in his curiosity.

- ‘What are my children like? They are three young adults who are only just realizing that they still have a lot to learn about life. Stanbor, my youngest, should be getting his licintiate. Bogdan, my second, is no doubt preparing for his ordination while Hugo, my oldest, is working his way up the career ladder of the armed forces inbetween lessons on just how difficult being a father is.’

Mosciski paused with a sigh, reflecting on what sort of troubles he went through to get his brood to where they were before asking,

- ‘Have I started to bore you with the subject or would you like to hear more?’

Gavril chuckled when Jia Li asked her question. "Why yes we do, it is called Ziua Roddomn, and is actually in a few days. It began as a festival to zank God's Aspect Roddomn for ze harvest and to pray to Its Aspect Iarnuriga for a mild Winter," he explained, "Zough now it is mostly a time for families to come togezer and feast and celebrate."

He smiled as he thought about the holiday; it was one of his favourites as it was one of the few times of the year that all his family gathered together at the Palace in Albraustana-zid. Though he only allowed such thoughts to linger for a short moment before turning his attention back to conversation at hand.

His gaze then turned downward to Elisa and Kieran, and he smiled once again; he'd always been fond of children. "You have beautiful children," he said to Jia Li, and laughed, "It makes me wish for one of my own even more."

Kieran shook his head and then frowned. "What's 'licintiate' mean?" he asked curiously. Then he looked at his sister, who surprisingly didn't have an answer and didn't even pretend to have one. With only that slight pause, he continued, "How can your son be in the military and have children? Is he an officer?"

It began as a festival to zank God's Aspect Roddomn for ze harvest and to pray to Its Aspect Iarnuriga for a mild Winter," he explained, "Zough now it is mostly a time for families to come togezer and feast and celebrate."

Jia Li smiled warmly. "They are my pride," she admitted and caressed the child closest to her and subtly exchanged a fond glance with her husband. Even though they had been married for over eleven years, they were as affectionate as newlyweds and while her children brought her joy, especially her youngest Adiwyn, they were a reflection of her union's happiness. In a way, she was quite selfish, but she also saw her children as physical proof that she had made the right decision in marrying her husband.

"How many children do you have?" she asked Gavril.

Mosciski nodded.

- 'I apologize. "Licentiate" is what we call someone who finishes a graduate course, that is higher education. Well, we actually call it a "Licencjat" but a lot of people have trouble pronouncing Leszy so we sometimes borrow latin terms.'

The second question was a bit more difficult as it meant exploring differences in national mentalities and law and even as he answered the first the president wondered how best to answer this question. In the end he decided to be honest.

- 'In Intermaris there are fewer limitations on who can marry and when than in Demoness but that being said yes, he is an officer making it easier.'

- 'Tell me, Kieran. Have you given any thought to what you wish to do as an adult? Any ambitions?'

There was a note of authentic curiosity in the question, what sort of ambition would a child that, no doubt, was already aware of his special position have?

Gavril was taken slightly aback by Jia Li's question. Perhaps he hadn't phrased his second statement correctly, English wasn't his first language after all. "Oh, I do not have any children of my own," he said, "I have yet to even get married. If I was, she'd be standing next to me."

While it was strange that Gavril was almost 30 and still had yet to marry or have children, he didn't particularly mind. It was simply that he had yet to find the right woman for himself; the only ones who cared were the older and more conservative members of his family. They were worried about succession and what the public might think. Gavril didn't think the first was much of a big deal, if he died childless his older sister would inherit. And as for the second, while he hadn't ruled very long, public opinion of him was quite high.

Kieran shook his head and gave a half shrug. "No," he replied, though he had given it much thought. Past imperial siblings joined the military, become landowners, or married into the Clans. A few had attempted to obtain government jobs and were met with varying degrees of hostility and success; certain positions were only open to certain people, as with the rest of the country, and commoners defended their positions zealously. His great aunt and uncle had married into wealth, but he wanted more of a challenge. His cousin and her husband were great scientists and while he didn't think he had the same aptitude, his curiosity was captured by each science lesson.

"I mean, I like learning," he continued, "and I like science a lot more than the other subjects, but I'm not sure what I'd do." Despite being a prince, he looked away shyly after he answered. He didn't appear to be used to being the focus of attention and the reason was obvious for beside him his sister began to become antsy.

---

"Oh," Jia Li said and stumbled as she recovered; she'd misheard him. "Of course. If it isn't rude to ask, why aren't you married? I'm curious because my dear Fenwicki brothers aren't married either and complain of the lack of suitable partners."

Mosciski nodded as Kieran gave his answer.

- 'It is good that you have something that interests you, and science is a good field.'

It was hard to suppress a smirk and yet he somehow managed. Though in honesty he had been honestly interested to get a glimpse of the workings of Kierans mind there was also a part that had wanted to test the imperial heir, get a feeling for what sort of person was growing out of her. With her becoming visibly restless and Kieran uncomfortable the president turned his attention to Elisa.

- 'And what of the Imperial Heir? Your fate as an adult is much clearer than your siblings but that doesn't mean you can't have an ambition, some sort of dream to fulfill, a way to leave your mark on history?'

Elisa smiled. "I want to unite the country," she replied. "Like my great grandmother."

Jia Li grimaced; she had spoke with her daughter on numerous occasions. Jia Li had grown up as an agnostic, but Elisa had somehow inherited a religious fervor that was not present in either of her parents. In particular, she was enamored with Oriana Deirdre, a priestess who essentially ruled the country in the twelfth century and suppressed the old ways. Jia Li had elected to restore the old ways and while not a popular decision, it had become appreciated. Her daughter, on the other hand, wanted to the Orianic ways. "We have two main sects of Morante. She means she wishes to reconcile their differences. From 1192 to 2003, Orthodox Morante was the state religion. I revived Blood Morante and tried to integrate it into Orthodox with limited success. It has caused some turmoil within the country."

Specifically, this had been cited as the reason for the formation of the Apostates and their terrorist reign, which was seldom spoken about outside the country.

Mosciski nodded at Jia Li's explanation behind Elisa's answer.

- 'People can be very... inflexible about their beliefs.'

He answered simply, anything more might steer towards topics such as religion, political infighting and terrorism, none of which where suited for the time or place. Turning his attention back to Elisa he continued.

- 'All the more reason to praise a desire to see reconciliation. It is a worthy goal.'

And one that was most likely to not succeed and even if would leave you hated by all sides. This again was something better left unsaid so instead he turned back to Jia Li.

- 'Your children are sharp, there is promise in them. I look forward to seeing what grows of them when they are tempered a bit by experience.'

As was every other politician, financial group and intelligence agency in the world, but that was another thing that could be left unsaid.
