Jia Li chuckled. "Of course." She looked toward the walls, where several servants waited patiently with trays of food and drinks; there was also a bar on the far wall. Both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks were available, but most glasses were filled with a gold-colored wine and this appeared to be the court's favorite. Hors d'oeuvres mainly consisted of local fruits, though a few fancy pastries and other such treats seemed to be floating around. "Ano, I believe dinner will be served in about an hour, but in the meantime there are plenty of things to eat," she replied and indeed, the smell of cooking had permeated the room; it was probably what had made Gavril's stomach growl in the first place. "I won't keep you much longer; we'll have plenty of time to speak later. It was a pleasure to meet you." |

"It was a pleasure to meet you as well," Gavril responded, nodding his head respectfully, "I look forward to speaking with you again." And with this Gavril made his way towards the wall of food, the ambassador and his wife having politely excused themselves to go mingle with the crowd. He stood for a moment looking over the hors d'ouevres and other foodstuffs, before deciding on a pair of tasty-looking pastries. He also picked up a glass of the golden wine, taking a sip before making a mental note not to drink anymore. He found it to be rather delicious and didn't wish to end up drunk at the ball, as that would more than likely make an extremely poor impression of himself, and by extension his nation. So he stood, eating his pastries and looking around the ballroom; there had to be someone for him to talk to. He didn't wish to simply stand over by the wall, he was the Voivode of Cetatsenia after all! |

"Your Royal Highness," purred a voice from behind Gavril. The female voice was strong, like many from Demoness, but had become corrupted by the brittle timbre of age. The woman to which it belonged was, as her speech suggested, quite old. She had arrived in her nineties with grace, but not without the battle wounds of time. Guri Katsuragi's hair had gone white with age and sometime in her youth she had adopted the foreign style and shorn it to a bare inch; it had been scandalous at the time as it was an olden Demonessian custom of mourning or defeat. She still bore the dignity of her station - being dual-hatted as the Adoni Diplomacy and matriarch of her clan - and chose to dress in a tan pantsuit that was popular across the continent for women of her age. Her wrinkled face was alight with a familiar smile that reached her faded blue eyes. Her husband Orson was on her arm, suited handsomely in a tuxedo. He, like his wife, kept his hair short in a Western style, but his hair retained some of its darker color, even if it was not readily evident if his hair had been black or brown in his youth. He was only slightly taller than his wife and it appeared age had desiccated a formerly muscular form. His face was weathered and lined, like he had spent much of his life outside in the elements or worrying away the time, and he wore a look of polite interest and recognition. When she had Gavril's attention, she curtseyed deeply and her husband bowed. "Lord Voivode, I'm not sure if you remember me. You were quite young when I saw you last," she continued. Before accepting her appointment to Adoni Diplomacy, Guri had served forty-five years as the Cetatsen ambassador and was widely used as a diplomatic consultant, not only to her government but also to others. She was sent to Cetatsenia as soon as she graduated college to assist with the newly reopened embassy and she was quickly promoted to full ambassador. However, Gavril wouldn't have even been in his teens when she left the country in 1995 and she had had more contact with his older siblings, if any at all. "Lord Ambassador," she greeted Mihai with a nod of her head; they were passingly familiar as well. "You've grown into quite a fine young man," Orson added. |

As Guri greeted him, Gavril was in the middle of taking the last bite of one of his pastries. He was gonna have to monitor his intake of these as well; he didn't want to end up stuffed on sides before dinner even began. But as he turned, he still had the pastry in his mouth and so held up a finger for the few seconds it took him to chew and swallow the remainder of the pastry. It also gave him time to think about who exactly it was that the woman was. She looked vaguely familiar, but he couldn't quite place her. Then it clicked, it was Guri Katsuragi; he hadn't seen the woman since she had left the Demonessian embassy in Cetatsenia when he was only nine years old. Granted they hadn't had much contact even while she was there, but he'd still seen her enough times to recognize her after some thought. "I have only a vague recollection," Gavril replied, "But you are Dna Katsuragi, correct? You were ambassador to Cetatsenia when I was only a child." Mihai greeted the woman with a nod, "Lady Katsuragi." The ambassador was well aware of who she was, part of his job was knowing the important people in Demoness after all, but he was pleasantly surprised that the Voivode remembered her. Perhaps it was simply luck that Gavril had recognized her without staring blankly for a minute trying to figure it out. And finally Gavril smiled at Orson's compliment. "Why zank you, I appreciate it," he said, "And you two seem to be doing quite well, if you do not mind me saying so." |

"We do have some longevity in our genes," Orson replied with a smirk. "It has almost been twenty years, milord, and I am honored you remember me," Guri said. "How is your mother? We used to write letters, but after email became the norm in the office it's been hard for me to continue. I've sent her a few cards and she seemed to be in good health." |

"Oh, she's doing quite well, zank you for asking," Gavril replied, "Ze deaz of my fazer hit her razer hard, but she's gotten better wizin ze last few months." While Mircea was the type to put his work above his family, it didn't stop his wife from loving him, and she had been absolutely heartbroken upon his death. For a few weeks there was a worry that the emotional suffering would cause her own health to decline, not that she'd have ever admitted it. Thankfully her condition had improved quite a bit since then. "You two have children, correct? How are zey doing?" he asked. After all, it was only polite to show an interest in her family as well. |

"I will have to write her a letter," Guri said, mentally taking a note. To Gavril's question, she replied, "Three children, actually. You may have met my son Ashuril, who is the former High Priest." She looked around and noticed the absence of his tall, dark form. He had always been a shy and quiet boy, despite his imposing height, and life as a priest suited far more than life as a Clan husband ever would have. Consequently, he had been completely unprepared to serve as the sole ruler of Demoness after the unexpected death of his wife. "I don't see him though," she said, suppressing a sigh; she hoped it wasn't a sign he was fighting with his daughter again. She smiled back at Gavril. "My daughter Yukiko seems cozy in Fenwick and my younger daughter Eris is busy filming a new movie." She failed to mention that Eris was currently embroiled in a scandal involving insider trading and an ex-boyfriend. Katsuragi lawyers denied any wrongdoing, but it appeared that Eris might not be able to avoid jail time. "I believe this one might be a period drama." She smiled again and chose to segue to another topic; she would have been ashamed of her children if she had not given birth to them. "Thank you for asking. How are you settling into your new role?" She seemed to have a genuine interest in the answer. |

Gavril laughed, "Well I must say zat I've settled into it quite well for ze most part. And it wasn't particularly difficult." Then Gavril took a moment to think about his rule, it had only been about a year but it had gone rather well, though not without its difficulties. "Zough most of ze public seems to love me, I have run into some trouble wiz some of ze more conservative members of ze nobility. I have butted heads more zan once wiz some of ze older Knezi over some of my more liberal policies. But overall things have gone well." While most of the Cetatsen population would consider themselves to be liberal, most of them were concentrated in the valley region. The conservative population was found mostly among the more sparsely inhabited highlands and mountains. However this meant that from a geographic perspective Cetatsenia was more or less evenly split among the liberal and conservative minded individuals. The fact that Gavril's father had attempted to take a more moderate position to appease both whilst Gavril was rather aggressive in pushing his polices did not endear him to several of the Knezi. |

Guri nodded. "The world seems to be heading toward liberalism, but as we become, ano, more like a global community, I have noticed that some cling even tighter to their traditions," she replied. "We all have the instinct to be xenophobic, to fear outsiders; it's just unfortunate that only a few of us have learned to suppress it." She nodded. "But you will make progress as they learn how much they can push and how much ground you will give. If you don't mind me asking, what sort of policies?" |

Gavril sighed, he wasn't fond off topics like this. Really, he thought it looked bad upon his nation that such issues actually were issues. But it'd be rude not to answer, so he did anyway. But he tried to keep his answer short. "Oh, zings such as banning ze civil unions of homosexuals and fully legalizing gay marriage and my attempts to get rid of corruption wizin ze government," he said, "Oftentimes zings zat shouldn't be issues, but still are anyway."
