If one was to take a place from the nation of Demoness to Cetatsenia, one would most likely see the dichotomy that the nation was rather known for. In the southern parts of the nation one would notice the highlands, heavily forested and almost untouched by man aside from the winding roads and the occasional town. But further north, the terrain would give away to the lowlands of the Centric Basin. This land was flat, and lacked the expansive forests, though there were smaller isolated forests. But the main difference one would notice would be the level of development, it was dominated by a large amount of farmland as the lowland soil was incredibly fertile, but there was also the occasional city, bustling with people. Albraustana-zid was one such city, and it was the primate city of Cetatsenia, the richest and most populous and most important of them all. It was built along both sides of the great Albastru River that ran through much of Cetatsenia, though most of it was on the southern bank of the river. This was because of the simple fact that Albraustana-zid had begun life as three separate forts and settlements built along the river. Albrau and Stana had been built on the Southern bank, and over time had grown together until they were finally united into Albraustana. And while Zid would eventually become part of the greater whole, for a long time it was simply considered a city separated from the capital only by the river. Since it had grown organically over the numerous years, and had once been three separate cities, the streets and roads had a habit of being winding and could be complicated to navigate for those unfamiliar with them who had no map. Though the roads had over time been widened and revamped in order to accommodate cars, and the newest sections of the city on the outskirts actually had a gridded street plan. As it was the middle of the day, the streets were currently filled with cars and buses, and the sidewalks filled with pedestrians, while the newest addition to the city's transportation network, the subway system, ran below the streets. While there was a number of attractions in the city, such as the museums and baths, one of the most prominent is the Palatul Regal, the Royal Palace. The site of the original settlement of Albrau and lying atop a hill, it has been torn down or otherwise destroyed and then subsequently rebuilt several times throughout history. The most recent being the ascension of Ioan I to the throne of Cetatsenia, though it has been renovated and updated since then. The Palace itself is surrounded by a wall that rings the entirety of the hill, with only a single gate leading up to it. The wall is patrolled by a special corps of Cetatsenian soldiers, easily identified by their bright blue ceremonial uniforms and ornate, pointed helmets. After that, a road lead up to the palace proper, an expansive building with a stone exterior that shared more in common with a medieval castle than what one thinks of when they hear the word 'palace'. It was home to a fair number of servants, as well as the guardsmen, and a small number of government officials. Most of those lived out in the city, and worked in their own buildings. It was absolutely huge, and in front of it was an expansive pool of water. Overall, it was an impressive sight that could be seen from a good portion of the city. At the moment, however, Voivode Gavril IV Suveraneshti was not at his home in the palace. Rather he was at the airport, which had been cleared of any citizens besides him, the guards arrayed with him, and those who worked there; all flights to this airport had either been delayed or rerouted to other nearby airports. Today was an important day, as this was the decided upon day of Jia Li's visit to Cetatsenia. As two nations whose relationship could be accurately described as "mutually neutral", this was a rather important meeting, and Gavril did not want to mess anything up. So he stood alongside his older sister Andreea, the Steward of Cetatsenia, in the airport, ready to head out onto the tarmac to greet the Empress as soon as her plane set down. "Part of it may have been zat he didn't want someone like her to be in charge," Gavrila said, "Zere's a reason she's known as Daciana ze Bloody. She was a bloodthirsty psychopath; loved nozing more zan fighting and killing." Gavril nodded his head in agreement, "Yes, zat is generally her legacy. She was not particularly unfair or cruel, she was just a skilled warrior and it is a well-documented fact zat she enjoyed killing people. Oftentimes she would punish criminals by forcing zem to fight her. Ze reason she has such an unorzodox and unsettling expression in her portrait is zat zere is not a single painting or document from ze time about her zat does not show or describe her smiling zis way." "As I said, she was a bloodzirsty căţea," Gavrila added, "She inherited her mozer's martial ability, but none of ze woman's restraint." |

"I once read that if a man gives a death sentenced, then he should be the one to carry it out," Xel said, "and it seems Daciana believed it as well. However, I don't see the use in allowing the possibility of being murdered. It only unnecessarily risks instability and her rule was already challenged once." |

"She preferred fair fights," Gavrila said, shrugging, "She is quoted as saying somezing along ze lines of 'it wouldn't be fun to kill zem if zey couldn't fight back'. She did not just like to kill, she liked to fight and kill." "And she was also very confident in her skills," Gavril added as he nodded, "Her mozer was widely considered one of ze greatest warriors in Cetatsenia aside from Ioan I, and she taught her daughter everyzing she knew. And I suppose Daciana's beliefs were well-founded; she ended up dying of disease." Edited by Cetatsenia, Dec 6 2013, 01:07 AM.

"Was it an infection from a wound?" Xel asked dryly. He had already made his thoughts on the matter clear, though to be fair, he still wouldn't allow anyone near Jia Li even if she were the greatest warrior who ever lived. |

"Actually, it was most likely a disease of her lungs," Gavril said, "Anyway, let us continue looking at ze portraits, shall we?" And so the group made their way slowly across the line of portraits, Gavril giving their name as what they are most known for, if anything. Gavrila, of course, made comments as well. However, most of them weren't particularly interesting and didn't really do anything groundbreaking. And then they came to the portrait of Gavril II, a rather unassuming man with the typical long Cetatsen hair and a clean shaven face. However, his hair was streaked with grey, and he appeared to be middleaged whereas most of the other Voivodes were depicted in their younger years. "And zis here is Gavril II, one of ze most important Voivodes after Ioan I and his son Vlad II," Gavril said, "It was under his rule zat Aspect Mezyanism officially came into existence." |

"Why is that?" Jia Li asked. "I recall that Aspect Mezyanism isn't the same as the mainstream and that it's assumed aspects of Cetasen culture. Did he try to reconcile the two belief systems?" |

"Yes, he did," Gavril said, "By zis point most of ze peasants worshiped boz ze Mezyan God and ze pagan Gods. However, ze nobles were completely pagan; zey zought zat ze Lach missionaries were an attempt by zose in modern-day Intermaris to influence Cetatsenia. After a rebellion in ze norz, Gavril II forced all ze nobles to worship ze Mezyan God. Zen he gazered ze wisest of ze pagan priests and Mezyan priests and codified ze hybridized religion into ze Aspect Mezyanism of today." "You forgot to mention zat Gavril worshiped God before he came to ze zrone," Gavrila added, "Zat's a bit important, since zat lead to ze rebellion in ze first place." Gavril rolled his eyes, "Yes, what she just said." To which Gavrila playfully stuck her tongue out at him. |

"That's interesting. If Gavril was a noble and the nobles were pagan, who influenced him to convert in the first place? And how were the missionaries allowed to gain so many converts that the peasants worshipped the Mezyan god?" She thought it particularly strange since Demonessian society was tightly structured and deviance from "tradition" was met with disapproval, and since the Crown's legitimacy depended on Morante, the government never allowed foreign missionaries to gain much of a foothold. |

"From what I recall, Gavril II was ze third in line for ze zrone, after his two younger brozers; so Gavril was never expected to inherit anyzing," Gavril explained, "And he was an intellectual, with a particular interest in philosophy and religion; from records what is believed to have happened is zat he studied Mezyanism he grew to believe its tenants." "And as for why ze missionaries were allowed to gain such a following, it is a combination of zings. Ze nobles did not wish to anger too many of ze Intermarines, and zey did not see it as particularly important. Ze peasants had no political power and didn't much care zat ze nobles didn't worship God. So ze nobility did not see it as a real zreat unless zose in power began embracing ze religion." "Quite a bit of our early history has ze rulers worrying about Intermarines," Gavrila added, "Ze tâmpita had a habit of sticking zeir nose in our business since some of zem still saw Cetatsenia as rightfully a part of Intermaris." |

Jia Li nodded sympathetically, though her nation had never suffered such a fate; if anything, Demoness had spent more time on conquest than being the victim in war. The only time that it had been truly defeated - as opposed to exhausted, like in the Great War - the victor had made such an impression that it been invited into a permanent alliance. "It seems like the perfect string of events occurred in order for Mezyanism to gain footing in Cetatsenia," she said. "So tell me, what happened to Gavril's two younger brothers?" |
