If one was to take a place from the nation of Demoness to Cetatsenia, one would most likely see the dichotomy that the nation was rather known for. In the southern parts of the nation one would notice the highlands, heavily forested and almost untouched by man aside from the winding roads and the occasional town. But further north, the terrain would give away to the lowlands of the Centric Basin. This land was flat, and lacked the expansive forests, though there were smaller isolated forests. But the main difference one would notice would be the level of development, it was dominated by a large amount of farmland as the lowland soil was incredibly fertile, but there was also the occasional city, bustling with people. Albraustana-zid was one such city, and it was the primate city of Cetatsenia, the richest and most populous and most important of them all. It was built along both sides of the great Albastru River that ran through much of Cetatsenia, though most of it was on the southern bank of the river. This was because of the simple fact that Albraustana-zid had begun life as three separate forts and settlements built along the river. Albrau and Stana had been built on the Southern bank, and over time had grown together until they were finally united into Albraustana. And while Zid would eventually become part of the greater whole, for a long time it was simply considered a city separated from the capital only by the river. Since it had grown organically over the numerous years, and had once been three separate cities, the streets and roads had a habit of being winding and could be complicated to navigate for those unfamiliar with them who had no map. Though the roads had over time been widened and revamped in order to accommodate cars, and the newest sections of the city on the outskirts actually had a gridded street plan. As it was the middle of the day, the streets were currently filled with cars and buses, and the sidewalks filled with pedestrians, while the newest addition to the city's transportation network, the subway system, ran below the streets. While there was a number of attractions in the city, such as the museums and baths, one of the most prominent is the Palatul Regal, the Royal Palace. The site of the original settlement of Albrau and lying atop a hill, it has been torn down or otherwise destroyed and then subsequently rebuilt several times throughout history. The most recent being the ascension of Ioan I to the throne of Cetatsenia, though it has been renovated and updated since then. The Palace itself is surrounded by a wall that rings the entirety of the hill, with only a single gate leading up to it. The wall is patrolled by a special corps of Cetatsenian soldiers, easily identified by their bright blue ceremonial uniforms and ornate, pointed helmets. After that, a road lead up to the palace proper, an expansive building with a stone exterior that shared more in common with a medieval castle than what one thinks of when they hear the word 'palace'. It was home to a fair number of servants, as well as the guardsmen, and a small number of government officials. Most of those lived out in the city, and worked in their own buildings. It was absolutely huge, and in front of it was an expansive pool of water. Overall, it was an impressive sight that could be seen from a good portion of the city. At the moment, however, Voivode Gavril IV Suveraneshti was not at his home in the palace. Rather he was at the airport, which had been cleared of any citizens besides him, the guards arrayed with him, and those who worked there; all flights to this airport had either been delayed or rerouted to other nearby airports. Today was an important day, as this was the decided upon day of Jia Li's visit to Cetatsenia. As two nations whose relationship could be accurately described as "mutually neutral", this was a rather important meeting, and Gavril did not want to mess anything up. So he stood alongside his older sister Andreea, the Steward of Cetatsenia, in the airport, ready to head out onto the tarmac to greet the Empress as soon as her plane set down. All of the Cetatsens listened to Xel's explanation with interest. Gavril's face was one of curiosity and interest, because even he didn't believe that any of this was true it seemed like a very important part of Demonessian culture and they believed it to be a reality. Gavrila, on the other hand, had one eyebrow cocked the entire time; she'd already made her views on this matter clear, so she saw no reason to say anything else. Besides, even she had enough tact to realize that it would be a horrible idea to mention that retrosight was probably the most common because it was the easiest to bullshit. And Andreea kept a politely neutral expression, though she kept an eye on her cousin; she really didn't want Gavrila offending the Demonessians any more. Once he was finished, Gavril nodded his head. "I see, and I suppose ze uses in confirming whezer or not ze person is ze reincarnation of ze previous Empress," he said, going along with what was being said despite not believing a word of it, "But how exactly can you test whezer or not some has true sight?" "And why ze hell can some wiz retrosight not just look and see if ze Empress was ze person's past life?" Gavrila said, her question coming out as more of a challenge of the Demonessian beliefs than a query born from honest curiosity, "Hell, if what you are saying is true zen zey should only have ze one past life anyway." |

"Because Retrosight is only good for one's own past lives," Xel replied curtly. He, like Gavrila, believed it to be the easiest to fake despite his cousin's claims to having it. She had been documented as a child remembering things she shouldn't have known and had become a case study for Ka Psychology, but even if she had fooled several prominent intellectuals and Xel usually deferred to their knowledge, he didn't trust anything he couldn't conceivably touch. He turned to Gavril. "I am honestly not certain," he replied, answering his question. "I am not privy to that information as I am not a member of the Order of Oracles, but Hayashibara was declared one long before it was relevant to modern politics." Rather than continue the conversation on its current course, he chose to deflect it to historical matters again. "-and it is an ultimately rare and very dangerous ability. Most of the True Seers have been members of the Church, but there was at least one instance of a True Seer being found and trained outside the Church, though he ultimately became a consort to the empress anyway as a matter of political treaty. Morikubo Kangi was never declared to be a Seer of Truth, but contemporary documents indicated that both his clan and the Church believed him to be. Since this was the time that the Morikubi were exiled to the desert, one could extrapolate that there is some sort of baseline test for this sort of thing." He briefly glanced at his wife, considering if he should continue. "I work with Hayashibara on a regular basis and I have not seen any evidence of her abilities, but she does have an uncanny way of making one feel uncomfortable." Jia Li smiled at that, so perhaps it had been the best thing to say. |

"Eh, fair enough," Gavrila said in response to Xel's answering her question, "You win zis round I guess." Then she grinned, showing that she didn't think ill of any of the Demonessians because of their beliefs. Sometimes she just liked to argue, and ascribed to the philosophy that you should question everything. "Oh, so zere is a True Seer alive right now?" Gavril said, which was an interesting thing despite him not believing in it. He decided that the 'making one feel uncomfortable' could possibly just be a result of someone believing that she held the ability of True Sight, but deemed it unnecessary to vocalize that thought. "You know, Octavian might be interested in meeting wiz her. He does find ozer religions interesting," Andreea said. "Fuck, I would love to be zere when he was told zat she has some kind of divine insight," Gavrila said, laughing, "You would figure zat someone interested in ozer religions would not act so surprised by stuff like zat." |

Jia Li laughed. "We could always arrange that, possibly as a sort of exchange of religions," she replied with a smile. "And then record it." Her grin widened. "She is quite busy running her order, but a meeting could be facilitated if he'd actually be interested," Xel offered. To be honest, he thought she spent less time running her order and more time trying to be a spy master, but it was a suspicion he could never prove. Regardless, if that were true, he believed the Adoni NDAISE had taken care of the problem. |

Gavril had to smile at the thought as well, but he just shrugged. "Perhaps, since I do zink he would be interested," Gavril said, "But he is a razer busy man, and he does have quite a few duties of his own." "He is ze head of his own Church in a town up in ze norz of ze Knezate," Andreea explained, "And he is somezing of a scholar as well." |

"All the more reason for him to visit," Jia Li replied. "It would be advantageous for a scholar to compare other religions." Mentally, Xel shook his head. He was beginning to see this as a bad idea, but he could not come up with another topic of conversation as of yet. |

"True, but as much as I love my brozer I zink it would probably be more advantageous to involve more zan just one priest from ze respective religions," Gavril said, "And besides, zis is out of my auzority. Well, technically everyzing in Cetatsenia is wizin my auzority, but I prefer to stay out of religious matters. After all, unlike you I am a secular ruler whose power comes from a secular source." "Hell, priests are barred from serving in ze government," Gavrila said, "A noble would piss a hell of a lot of people off if zey put a priest in a position of power." |

Jia Li nodded. "I understand. It can be difficult to rule when religion is involved. There is at least one secular movement and it's gained some popularity, but the fact is that most of the country follows Morante, so there is little point in becoming secular," she replied. "And besides, the only power the priests have is within the judicial arena. I suppose there really isn't a law barring them from serving within the government, but I don't recall any instances of it happening, at least not directly. That isn't to say they haven't had an influence of some kind." |

"To be honest, you may be considered a Goddess by your people, but I really do not envy you," Gavril said with a chuckle, "Being a monarch is enough work as is. But Cetatsenia has been secular for a long time, though it was never a particularly religious monarchy in ze first place." "Cetatsens never even followed ze concept of divine right to rule," Andreea elaborated, "Ze Voivodes ruled because it was zeir birzright as descendants of Ioan I." |

Jia Li tilted her head. "So no one has ever challenged that right?" she asked curiously. "Surely someone has thought that xe would make a better voivode than the current one." |
