If one was to take a place from the nation of Demoness to Cetatsenia, one would most likely see the dichotomy that the nation was rather known for. In the southern parts of the nation one would notice the highlands, heavily forested and almost untouched by man aside from the winding roads and the occasional town. But further north, the terrain would give away to the lowlands of the Centric Basin. This land was flat, and lacked the expansive forests, though there were smaller isolated forests. But the main difference one would notice would be the level of development, it was dominated by a large amount of farmland as the lowland soil was incredibly fertile, but there was also the occasional city, bustling with people. Albraustana-zid was one such city, and it was the primate city of Cetatsenia, the richest and most populous and most important of them all. It was built along both sides of the great Albastru River that ran through much of Cetatsenia, though most of it was on the southern bank of the river. This was because of the simple fact that Albraustana-zid had begun life as three separate forts and settlements built along the river. Albrau and Stana had been built on the Southern bank, and over time had grown together until they were finally united into Albraustana. And while Zid would eventually become part of the greater whole, for a long time it was simply considered a city separated from the capital only by the river. Since it had grown organically over the numerous years, and had once been three separate cities, the streets and roads had a habit of being winding and could be complicated to navigate for those unfamiliar with them who had no map. Though the roads had over time been widened and revamped in order to accommodate cars, and the newest sections of the city on the outskirts actually had a gridded street plan. As it was the middle of the day, the streets were currently filled with cars and buses, and the sidewalks filled with pedestrians, while the newest addition to the city's transportation network, the subway system, ran below the streets. While there was a number of attractions in the city, such as the museums and baths, one of the most prominent is the Palatul Regal, the Royal Palace. The site of the original settlement of Albrau and lying atop a hill, it has been torn down or otherwise destroyed and then subsequently rebuilt several times throughout history. The most recent being the ascension of Ioan I to the throne of Cetatsenia, though it has been renovated and updated since then. The Palace itself is surrounded by a wall that rings the entirety of the hill, with only a single gate leading up to it. The wall is patrolled by a special corps of Cetatsenian soldiers, easily identified by their bright blue ceremonial uniforms and ornate, pointed helmets. After that, a road lead up to the palace proper, an expansive building with a stone exterior that shared more in common with a medieval castle than what one thinks of when they hear the word 'palace'. It was home to a fair number of servants, as well as the guardsmen, and a small number of government officials. Most of those lived out in the city, and worked in their own buildings. It was absolutely huge, and in front of it was an expansive pool of water. Overall, it was an impressive sight that could be seen from a good portion of the city. At the moment, however, Voivode Gavril IV Suveraneshti was not at his home in the palace. Rather he was at the airport, which had been cleared of any citizens besides him, the guards arrayed with him, and those who worked there; all flights to this airport had either been delayed or rerouted to other nearby airports. Today was an important day, as this was the decided upon day of Jia Li's visit to Cetatsenia. As two nations whose relationship could be accurately described as "mutually neutral", this was a rather important meeting, and Gavril did not want to mess anything up. So he stood alongside his older sister Andreea, the Steward of Cetatsenia, in the airport, ready to head out onto the tarmac to greet the Empress as soon as her plane set down. "I suppose zat does make some sense," Gavril said after a moment's thought, "Zough it seems to me zat in practice it is not terribly different from ozer ways of governance." "And zat is all zat really matters," Gavrila said, "Ze way zings are de facto is a hell of a lot more important zan ze ways zings are de jure." |

Jia Li nodded. "This is true as well," she replied. "De facto, the Clans have had tremendous influence over the land for several centuries and they have been able to influence the throne itself. De facto, they are nobility." |

"So Demoness really is not zat different when you get down to how zings actually were," Gavrila said with a grin, "Just how you say zey were." "But while zat was true, it is quite a bit different now. Is it not Jia Li?" Gavril said, then sighed, "Countries like Cetatsenia are a dying breed, I think. Ze nobility of ze world is eizer being replaced or has been replaced by politicians and ze like." |

Jia Li nodded. "I'm sure there are several nobles that know how to preserve themselves and their titles. After all, most countries adore tradition. It's the ones that fully convert to democracy that cause issue," she replied. Despite the last sentence, she did believe in democracy, though not as fully as she had in her youth. She had come to realize that the monarchy was necessary for her rule and the health of her country and while she wanted to preserve it for her children, she did wonder what it was like to rule a democracy. "Our Clans are different though. They have already adapted to the modern world and hold positions of power and influence through their own pursuit." |

"Hmmm, while it is true zat many adore tradition zere are just as many who would willingly zrow tradition away in pursuit of a better life. I believe zat is what lead to ze rise of democracy, ze masses desired change and zere were more of zem zan zere were nobles who wished to keep a hold of tradition," Gavril said, "Zat sentiment was less common in Cetatsenia since ze idea zat ze monarchy rules for ze people and ze nation as a whole gained widespread acceptance. Your Clans adapted because zey had to, or else zey would have lost zeir power; ze Cetatsen nobility never had to make zat choice." Gavrila just closed her eyes and nodded her head in mock solemnity in response to her cousin's little speech. Then she opened them and grinned, "Zat was deep. It sounds like somezing zat would come out of Aurel's mouz." Gavril grinned in response, "I will take zat as compliment, I find Aurel to be a razer wise man." |

Jia Li smiled and looked to Aurel to see if he had anything to add. |

Aurel simply smiled and nodding his head towards the Voivode, "Why zank you for saying zat, Voivode." Gavril waved it off, "It is no problem. I say it because it is true, you have lived more zan zree of my lifetimes." "Just being old does not make you wise," Aurel replied slowly, "Somezing zat many people forget. Especially ze old ones." "Eh, well screw zem; we are talking about you," Gavrila replied with a grin, "And anyone would be an idiot to at least not listen to what you have to say." "Va multumesc, doamna," he said to Gavrila before once again falling silent. Aurel wasn't one for talking much, and was content at the moment to just listen to the conversation between the Cetatsens and Demonessians. |

Jia Li nodded. "You are indeed wise, Popescu-was," she agreed. "You have the wisdom to acknowledge that you don't know everything. There is a lot of pressure on people in today's world to know the answers, even if they do not, so they fake it. You, however, are genuine."

At Jia Li's compliment, Aurel gave her a soft smile. "Why zank you Empress," he said, "I appreciate your kind words." "Hey!" Gavrila said suddenly as soon as Aurel had finished speaking, "Zat is ze first time you have actually called him Aurel. Usually you call him Grandfazer or whatever ze hell it is you call him." Now that his cousin had mentioned it, Gavril realized that she was right. Prior to this, the Empress hadn't addressed Aurel by name. Not that any of the Cetatsens minded the change, they assumed the Empress's prior way of addressing him had just been Demonessian respect for the elderly or something of the sort. After all, all the Cetatsens present referred to him as Aurel and they considered it to be perfectly normal. |

OOC: I honestly would have addressed him by his last name, but I couldn't find it. Aurel was the only name listed. She would have called him by his surname, so if that isn't it please substitute that. IC: "It is a more respectful alternative than simply addressing one by xyr surname," Jia Li explained. "Popescu is old and wise, so it is natural to address him as such, much like you might refer to some one as 'doctor' or 'professor'." Edited by Demoness, Apr 19 2014, 11:02 PM.
