If one was to take a place from the nation of Demoness to Cetatsenia, one would most likely see the dichotomy that the nation was rather known for. In the southern parts of the nation one would notice the highlands, heavily forested and almost untouched by man aside from the winding roads and the occasional town. But further north, the terrain would give away to the lowlands of the Centric Basin. This land was flat, and lacked the expansive forests, though there were smaller isolated forests. But the main difference one would notice would be the level of development, it was dominated by a large amount of farmland as the lowland soil was incredibly fertile, but there was also the occasional city, bustling with people.

Albraustana-zid was one such city, and it was the primate city of Cetatsenia, the richest and most populous and most important of them all. It was built along both sides of the great Albastru River that ran through much of Cetatsenia, though most of it was on the southern bank of the river. This was because of the simple fact that Albraustana-zid had begun life as three separate forts and settlements built along the river. Albrau and Stana had been built on the Southern bank, and over time had grown together until they were finally united into Albraustana. And while Zid would eventually become part of the greater whole, for a long time it was simply considered a city separated from the capital only by the river.

Since it had grown organically over the numerous years, and had once been three separate cities, the streets and roads had a habit of being winding and could be complicated to navigate for those unfamiliar with them who had no map. Though the roads had over time been widened and revamped in order to accommodate cars, and the newest sections of the city on the outskirts actually had a gridded street plan. As it was the middle of the day, the streets were currently filled with cars and buses, and the sidewalks filled with pedestrians, while the newest addition to the city's transportation network, the subway system, ran below the streets.

While there was a number of attractions in the city, such as the museums and baths, one of the most prominent is the Palatul Regal, the Royal Palace. The site of the original settlement of Albrau and lying atop a hill, it has been torn down or otherwise destroyed and then subsequently rebuilt several times throughout history. The most recent being the ascension of Ioan I to the throne of Cetatsenia, though it has been renovated and updated since then.

The Palace itself is surrounded by a wall that rings the entirety of the hill, with only a single gate leading up to it. The wall is patrolled by a special corps of Cetatsenian soldiers, easily identified by their bright blue ceremonial uniforms and ornate, pointed helmets. After that, a road lead up to the palace proper, an expansive building with a stone exterior that shared more in common with a medieval castle than what one thinks of when they hear the word 'palace'. It was home to a fair number of servants, as well as the guardsmen, and a small number of government officials. Most of those lived out in the city, and worked in their own buildings. It was absolutely huge, and in front of it was an expansive pool of water. Overall, it was an impressive sight that could be seen from a good portion of the city.

At the moment, however, Voivode Gavril IV Suveraneshti was not at his home in the palace. Rather he was at the airport, which had been cleared of any citizens besides him, the guards arrayed with him, and those who worked there; all flights to this airport had either been delayed or rerouted to other nearby airports. Today was an important day, as this was the decided upon day of Jia Li's visit to Cetatsenia. As two nations whose relationship could be accurately described as "mutually neutral", this was a rather important meeting, and Gavril did not want to mess anything up. So he stood alongside his older sister Andreea, the Steward of Cetatsenia, in the airport, ready to head out onto the tarmac to greet the Empress as soon as her plane set down.

"Well, I am no expert on mountaineering but I am certain zat it is not uncommon to have fatalities on any mountain zat high," Gavril replied, "But ze weazer can be severe as well. From what I hear whiteouts, while not exceptionally common, are not a rare occurrence."

"Ciocaninima is a vârfalbi, which means 'white peak'," Andreea explained, "It is ze Cetatsen term for zose mountains whose tops are always covered in snow, even in ze hottest summers."

Jia Li nodded. "I know nothing about mountain climbing. We have two ranges in Demoness. We have one range that is simply to dangerous to traverse, though people still try because the peaks are something to conquer, and the other has been conquered for the most part. It is an older range and Kyala was fortified within it. In antiquity, I think it was difficult to climb, but modern roads and such have made it much easier."

Xel shook his head. "There are still dangerous peaks throughout the Spine Mountains, but Kyala is, as you say, 'conquered.'"

"Ze Vedic Mountains are sort of boz, really," Gavril replied, "Most of it has been 'conquered' but zere are still peaks zat kill even experienced mountaineers. Ze mountains are one of ze reasons Cetatsenia has only been invaded a handful of times."

"Cetatsenia is like a natural fortress," Gavrila said, grinning, "Mountains to ze west, dense forest and highlands to ze souz and norz, and sea to ze east."

Jia Li smiled. "Demoness is like that too, though our 'forest' is the desert," she replied. "We had a formidable navy and we were also very aggressive, so that helped discourage anyone from invading our borders. Do you have roads through the mountains or are they still impassible?"

"Oh, zese days zere are quite a few roads zrough ze mountain. Have been for a long time, actually; as I said, most of ze range has been tamed," Gavril replied, "Zough in some cases zey are more of a hindrance zan a boon to invaders."

"During ze Second Great War our guerrillas knew where convoys coming to or from Amarek would be traveling since zere were only a few roads large enough for zem," Gavrila added with a wolfish grin, she enjoyed learning the history of the Second Great War and had something of a morbid fascination with it, "So we knew where to hit zem, and where to put corpses on display."

Aurel himself was by this point gazing out the windows as the cars made their way away from the Palace. He knew quite well what Gavrila was talking about, though he'd personally stuck to the Sudic Highlands. Nonetheless it reminded him of what he himself had done, and what his allies had done as well. He didn't regret what he'd done to countless Intermarines, some no older than he'd been back then, but the memories of the war were powerful ones nonetheless.

Jia Li grimaced at the mention of displaying bodies, but she knew that it had been a different time back then. It was also no different than some of the things her country had done, yet that didn't mean she accepted it. She had made difficult decisions in her time, despite expectations that it was hard for her, and she was nevertheless queasy when it came to them.

"Why not blow up the roads?" she asked, hoping to guide the conversation away from the topic.

At that Gavrila raised an eyebrow, "Jia Li, we are talking about roads here, not bridges. You do not just 'blow zem up'."

"Zey would have been able to repair any damage we did to ze roads much more easily zan we could destroy zem," Aurel said, visibly surprising Gavrila as the old man rarely actually spoke about the war, "We were guerrillas and we had to make due wiz limited and outdated equipment."

Gavril nodded his head in agreement, "And not even ze soldiers necessarily had up-to-date equipment. Ze Cetatsen airforce was still using planes zat were over a decade old when ze Intermarines invaded."

"I'm sure landslides would have appropriately put roads out of commission for a time," Jia Li replied. Xel just shook his head; there was a reason he was in charge of the military.

"I suppose it was just not considered a tactically sound option," Gavril said when Aurel did not seem to be forthcoming with another response, the old man seemed to have already said all he wanted to, "But eizer way, ze AEC did zeir best and in ze end zey came out victorious."

Jia Li nodded, satisfied with the answer. However, she did not want to let the conversation end and instead segued to their destination. "What sort of things should I expect to see at the museum?"
