If one was to take a place from the nation of Demoness to Cetatsenia, one would most likely see the dichotomy that the nation was rather known for. In the southern parts of the nation one would notice the highlands, heavily forested and almost untouched by man aside from the winding roads and the occasional town. But further north, the terrain would give away to the lowlands of the Centric Basin. This land was flat, and lacked the expansive forests, though there were smaller isolated forests. But the main difference one would notice would be the level of development, it was dominated by a large amount of farmland as the lowland soil was incredibly fertile, but there was also the occasional city, bustling with people. Albraustana-zid was one such city, and it was the primate city of Cetatsenia, the richest and most populous and most important of them all. It was built along both sides of the great Albastru River that ran through much of Cetatsenia, though most of it was on the southern bank of the river. This was because of the simple fact that Albraustana-zid had begun life as three separate forts and settlements built along the river. Albrau and Stana had been built on the Southern bank, and over time had grown together until they were finally united into Albraustana. And while Zid would eventually become part of the greater whole, for a long time it was simply considered a city separated from the capital only by the river. Since it had grown organically over the numerous years, and had once been three separate cities, the streets and roads had a habit of being winding and could be complicated to navigate for those unfamiliar with them who had no map. Though the roads had over time been widened and revamped in order to accommodate cars, and the newest sections of the city on the outskirts actually had a gridded street plan. As it was the middle of the day, the streets were currently filled with cars and buses, and the sidewalks filled with pedestrians, while the newest addition to the city's transportation network, the subway system, ran below the streets. While there was a number of attractions in the city, such as the museums and baths, one of the most prominent is the Palatul Regal, the Royal Palace. The site of the original settlement of Albrau and lying atop a hill, it has been torn down or otherwise destroyed and then subsequently rebuilt several times throughout history. The most recent being the ascension of Ioan I to the throne of Cetatsenia, though it has been renovated and updated since then. The Palace itself is surrounded by a wall that rings the entirety of the hill, with only a single gate leading up to it. The wall is patrolled by a special corps of Cetatsenian soldiers, easily identified by their bright blue ceremonial uniforms and ornate, pointed helmets. After that, a road lead up to the palace proper, an expansive building with a stone exterior that shared more in common with a medieval castle than what one thinks of when they hear the word 'palace'. It was home to a fair number of servants, as well as the guardsmen, and a small number of government officials. Most of those lived out in the city, and worked in their own buildings. It was absolutely huge, and in front of it was an expansive pool of water. Overall, it was an impressive sight that could be seen from a good portion of the city. At the moment, however, Voivode Gavril IV Suveraneshti was not at his home in the palace. Rather he was at the airport, which had been cleared of any citizens besides him, the guards arrayed with him, and those who worked there; all flights to this airport had either been delayed or rerouted to other nearby airports. Today was an important day, as this was the decided upon day of Jia Li's visit to Cetatsenia. As two nations whose relationship could be accurately described as "mutually neutral", this was a rather important meeting, and Gavril did not want to mess anything up. So he stood alongside his older sister Andreea, the Steward of Cetatsenia, in the airport, ready to head out onto the tarmac to greet the Empress as soon as her plane set down. "Well, it depends. Do you want to start at ze bottom and just come down when we are done, or go all ze way to ze top and finish near ze exit?" Gavril said, "I personally prefer ze former, so I would start in ze older exhibits. But you are ze guest, so it is your choice." "Goddamn, I know you are trying to be polite, but zis is so trivial," Gavrila said to her cousin, "You could have just made a decision, you know." "I know, and I made ze decision to be polite and let our guests choose," Gavril replied simply, with a shrug. ------ The guard simply nodded his head. The three of them were all escorted along three different paths to the offices of the Garzile de la Palat. The guards weren't really much for idle chitchat, and so said nothing along the way unless one of the Demonessians asked a question. The offices themselves were comparable to a miniature version of a police station, and the Demonessians were each taken to a separate room. The rooms were furnished with little more than a desk, a chair, some cabinets, and a few framed paintings and potted plants. Once there the Demonessians would be told to sit, and one of the guards would pull a sheet of paper from one of the cabinets. It was a simple form, consisting of nothing more than a short section for basic personal information and a space for the Demonessians to write down what had occurred. |

Jia Li laughed. "Now you are sounding Demonessian, if we were to say our thoughts aloud," she giggled. Xel merely shook his head, but it was true: the Demonessians would be the gold medal winners in the Politeness Olympics being so frightened of accidentally offending a guest. After she recovered, she added, "I think it would be prudent to start in the past so everything makes sense in context. --- The written statements were relatively similar: Ariana stated that she initiated a training exercise and Arelia and Marcus indicated they had been awoke in the "night" by the impromptu exercise. Both handmaids stated that such exercises were normal in the Palace, though Marcus didn't bother with that disclaimer and kept the details of the fight rather vague. The handmaids kept the details vague as well, but for other reasons; they were protecting trade secrets and their own true abilities. Arelia didn't go out and state that she was a bodyguard, but it was strongly hinted from her testimony that she had the training. |

Gavril smiled and chuckled, "Well I do try my best to be polite to my guests; everyone should really, regardless of culture." "Anyway, zat sounds like a great idea," he said, turning to the entrance of the first exhibit. This particular exhibit, or more specifically groups of exhibits, contained the oldest relics of human habitation in modern-day Cetatsenia. Gavril lead them into a room around which there were several displays. Most of them contained some form of items made from stone or bone, and they were accompanied by plaques giving short explanations of what the items were and when they were from. "Well, here we are," Gavril said, "Ze oldest relics of humans in Cetatsenia." "It is kind of boring to be honest," Gavrila said, glancing down at a case filled with stone arrowheads. ------ The guards took the statement, gave them a short read, and then informed the Demonessians that they could leave. However, the head Guard who had accompanied Ariana deemed it appropriate to say more. "Head Handmaid, I mean zis wiz ze utmost respect, but I am completely serious when I say zis," he said, "I would appreciate it you refrained from zese sort of training exercises in ze fututre. And if zat is not possible, zen I want you to make absolute certain zat ze Garzile de la Palat are informed." Edited by Cetatsenia, May 24 2014, 02:45 PM.

Jia Li shrugged. "Sometimes. After all, they are probably the same as found in any other nation, but how often do you actually see these relics? And it's a bit like a mystery trying to figure out what the artifacts actually did. We only have pieces of what remains. I recall that there was a very primitive key and lock mechanism that was discovered, but all we had were the 'keys', which were made of bone or some such material. Until we found the rest of the mechanism, it was a mystery why individuals were being buried with a three inch carved bone." As she spoke, she studied the display cases, skimming some plaques while reading others. If she saw something interesting, she pointed it out to her husband or asked Gavril. --- Ariana nodded pliantly. "Of course. The lack of communication was an oversight on my part," she apologized. |

"A stone-age key and lock?" Gavril asked, obviously impressed, "Zat is quite interesting; locks were not found here until much later." As the group looked around the room, Gavril was more than happy to answer any questions as well as he could. However, it was evident that his knowledge of this era of Cetatsenia's history was far less extensive than his knowledge of later periods. Eventually they came to the next serious of rooms, and here there were quite a few more people. None of them bothered the Voivode or the Empress and kept their distance from the group. This particular section was about the earliest developments of actual civilizations, including the Alb culture that had been spoken off in the car. In fact, the obvious centrepiece of the exhibit were the Ene tablets. In truth they didn't look like much; they were a pair of fractured clay tablets with worn symbols etched deeply into their surface. The symbols were quite simplistic, consisting entirely of straight lines, though it was obvious from their uniformity and organization that they were indeed early writing. In addition there were copper and stone tools and items, pictures of excavated ruins, and artist's reconstructions of what some of the early cities along the Albastru river may have looked like in their height. "Now zis, zis is a section I find to me far more interesting," Gavril said as they entered, "Ze dawn of true Cetatsen civilization." "Yeah, it is neat, but it is not actually Cetatsen civilization you know," Gavrila smirked, "We did not come until a hell of a lot later." ------ The guard nodded his head. "Alright, and zank you for your cooperation," he said, "We are finished here; you can continue wiz your duties, and I hope zis was not too much of an inconvenience." "But it is your ancestors," Jia Li replied. She studied the tablets for a moment, and then added, "I always wondered about early technology. When you look at something today, like a computer, you think 'How else could this have come about? It seems so obvious!', but before it was invented, no one could think of it. How do you come up with the idea that squiggly or square lines in succession equals a word? Or a sentence?" She shook her head. --- Ariana curtseied. "Very little, milord," she replied demurely and then left. After leaving, however, she wandered toward the kitchen as she intended to watch the cooks and taste the ingredients for herself. |

"I have always found zat fascinating as well. You have so many zings zat seem obvious zese days, but in ze past ze ideas were revolutionary," Gavril replied, "Mankind's collective intelligence is always advancing; in a hundred years people will be looking back on our time and wondering how come we did not zink of any of zeir technology, because ze ideas behind zem seem so obvious." "Zis is a really deep conversation to be brought on by a couple of rocks wiz some lines on zem," Gavrila said, grinning in jest, "What gets me is how damn old zis shit is, and zat any of it is still around." |

"That's what makes it so amazing! It not only lasted the elements, but also contact with people. Had certain events not occurred, our people would have had documents that were over-" Jia Li counted silently a moment. "Four thousand years old and the artifacts that would have gone along with it. As it is, we have several ancient artifacts, but we don't know the date of all of them." |

"Yeah, I would love to know how zese zings survived wizout ze letters getting worn down," Gavrila said. "Well, if you zink about it logically zere must have been many more tablets zat did not survive," Andreea said, "Chances are at least some of zem survived. What is amazing is zat zey managed to find ze ones zat did." "Actually Jia Li, I have a question, is zere any particular reason you do not know ze dates of all zat you have?" Gavril asked, "Not even a rough estimate? Surely you can date zem, right?" |

Jia Li wanted to ask if there had been a translation of the tablet, but Gavril's question interrupted her line of thought. "Some of the items may have had something to do with the Apocrypha. Once a passage is removed from the World, it is removed from all copies in circulation and placed in context within a leaf called the Apocrypha. From my understanding, artifacts did not necessarily follow the same route and may have been stored locally. We have that their respective passages were removed, but there is little beyond that," she replied. She shrugged and then continued, "Some artifacts we simply do not have any context." |
