If one was to take a place from the nation of Demoness to Cetatsenia, one would most likely see the dichotomy that the nation was rather known for. In the southern parts of the nation one would notice the highlands, heavily forested and almost untouched by man aside from the winding roads and the occasional town. But further north, the terrain would give away to the lowlands of the Centric Basin. This land was flat, and lacked the expansive forests, though there were smaller isolated forests. But the main difference one would notice would be the level of development, it was dominated by a large amount of farmland as the lowland soil was incredibly fertile, but there was also the occasional city, bustling with people. Albraustana-zid was one such city, and it was the primate city of Cetatsenia, the richest and most populous and most important of them all. It was built along both sides of the great Albastru River that ran through much of Cetatsenia, though most of it was on the southern bank of the river. This was because of the simple fact that Albraustana-zid had begun life as three separate forts and settlements built along the river. Albrau and Stana had been built on the Southern bank, and over time had grown together until they were finally united into Albraustana. And while Zid would eventually become part of the greater whole, for a long time it was simply considered a city separated from the capital only by the river. Since it had grown organically over the numerous years, and had once been three separate cities, the streets and roads had a habit of being winding and could be complicated to navigate for those unfamiliar with them who had no map. Though the roads had over time been widened and revamped in order to accommodate cars, and the newest sections of the city on the outskirts actually had a gridded street plan. As it was the middle of the day, the streets were currently filled with cars and buses, and the sidewalks filled with pedestrians, while the newest addition to the city's transportation network, the subway system, ran below the streets. While there was a number of attractions in the city, such as the museums and baths, one of the most prominent is the Palatul Regal, the Royal Palace. The site of the original settlement of Albrau and lying atop a hill, it has been torn down or otherwise destroyed and then subsequently rebuilt several times throughout history. The most recent being the ascension of Ioan I to the throne of Cetatsenia, though it has been renovated and updated since then. The Palace itself is surrounded by a wall that rings the entirety of the hill, with only a single gate leading up to it. The wall is patrolled by a special corps of Cetatsenian soldiers, easily identified by their bright blue ceremonial uniforms and ornate, pointed helmets. After that, a road lead up to the palace proper, an expansive building with a stone exterior that shared more in common with a medieval castle than what one thinks of when they hear the word 'palace'. It was home to a fair number of servants, as well as the guardsmen, and a small number of government officials. Most of those lived out in the city, and worked in their own buildings. It was absolutely huge, and in front of it was an expansive pool of water. Overall, it was an impressive sight that could be seen from a good portion of the city. At the moment, however, Voivode Gavril IV Suveraneshti was not at his home in the palace. Rather he was at the airport, which had been cleared of any citizens besides him, the guards arrayed with him, and those who worked there; all flights to this airport had either been delayed or rerouted to other nearby airports. Today was an important day, as this was the decided upon day of Jia Li's visit to Cetatsenia. As two nations whose relationship could be accurately described as "mutually neutral", this was a rather important meeting, and Gavril did not want to mess anything up. So he stood alongside his older sister Andreea, the Steward of Cetatsenia, in the airport, ready to head out onto the tarmac to greet the Empress as soon as her plane set down. "Well, you also haven't spent the entirety of your history next to an enemy much larger zan yourself zat would love to conquer you," Gavrila said. "Yes, ze status quo was razer important in older times," Gavril said, "Zere was ze worry zat if Cetatsenia fell into civil war zat ze Intermarines would come looking to retake our land." |

Jia Li nodded. "Yes, our nations were 'raised' in different environments. Demoness was mostly cut off from the rest of the world, which allowed it to create its own rules about culture without worrying about interference from outsiders," she said. "Our status quo is important as well, but we had more leeway to maintain it since we've repelled any hint of invasion." |

"Yeah, you all are pretty lucky," Gavrila said, grinning, "An ancient history, and never having faced ze possibility of a serious invasion." "Zough one wonders how ze Intermarines would have fared if zey had tried to invade," Gavril said, wondering aloud, "After all, nozing would bring ze Knezi togezer like zat. And zey couldn't even do it during ze Second great War." At Gavril's words Gavrila stopped for a split second and glanced back towards Aurel. However, he still kept the same stoic expression he'd had, so the Knezinja turned back to the Demonessian without a word. Edited by Cetatsenia, Dec 7 2013, 10:02 PM.

Jia Li was curious about the tiny pause in conversation, but since neither of them had spoken to Aurel, she decided to let it pass without notice. "Perhaps that is why they never invaded. They didn't see their chances as favorable, but it was a better position to make Cetatsenia believe this could happen." |

Gavril shrugged, "Well, I do not know. You'd have to ask an Intermarine about zat." "Yeah, zey probably have a better idea of what what going on on zat side of ze fence during zis point," Gavrila added, smiling, "So, shall we continue ze tour? Or is it getting boring? We could always just stop at ze important ones if you want." Gavril sighed and shook his head, then turned to the Demonessians "Yes, I suppose we could do zat. But only if you want to." |

"No, continue," Jia Li replied. She was interested in history, as she said, though her attention span was actually kept for once. She'd had issues as a child paying attention and consequently was not as educated as she should be. "This has been a good discussion." |

Gavrila stuck her tongue out at Jia Li, "I did not suggest we stop. Just zat we only looked at ze important Voivodes." Then she pointed to the next three portraits and said in quick succession, "Carol I, Dorin III, Dragomir," as she pointed to each one. "None of zem did anyzing important, except for maybe ze first two continuing Vlad II's ideas of nationalism," she said, and then turned to Gavril, "Zere, zat was nice and easy. Quick too." "Please don't do zat," Gavril said, "If she said she wants to know, zen it's rude to just do zat." Gavrila just shrugged, "Fine, fine. Do what you want." Then Gavril turned to Jia Li and smiled. After that the tour continued much as it had before; none of the other Voivodes were particularly interesting, but Gavril still did his best to describe what they did do to the best of his ability. And eventually they came to the end of the wall, at which point Gavril lead everyone over to the other side of the wall, where the tour consisted of much of the same. That is, until they reached the portrait with the burnt out face. When they reached it, there was a look of disgust, contempt, and even some anger visible on all of the Cetatsens faces. Gavrila's playful demeanor was all but gone and even the ever-stoic Aurel's face betrayed an expression of hatred. "And now we come to zis fucking curvÄ," she said, the tone in her voice making it clear that she wasn't just jokingly cursing, but truly meant the words as an insult. "Voivode Traian," Gavril said, practically spitting the name, "Ze most hated Voivode in Cetatsenia's history." |

Reflexively, the Demonessians again diverted their eyes, and even though they were talking about the portrait, no one dared to look at the burnt spot on the wall; this was how strong damnatio memoriae was in their society. Jia Li was actually surprised they had even named him; all records of a damned person were purged and their name was purposefully "forgotten" so that only euphemisms could be used, if the person was ever mentioned at all. She was torn when she looked at Gavril: she wanted to know more and even though she flaunted many traditions, she respected the tradition that forbid her from asking. Instead, she shook her head sympathetically. |

The Demonessian's reaction was unexpected, to say the least. The concept of completely erasing a person from history was, and always had been, a concept absent and alien to Cetatsen society. Especially in the modern era when it was all but impossible to erase someone's existence completely unless a state was completely isolated and closed off from the world. And generally people were curious about the burnt portrait hanging on the wall, and were curious about Traian and what he did to earn being despised by every single person in Cetatsenia. Granted, once they found out they sometimes wished they had just left the topic alone, but that never stopped them from being curious in the first place. "Uh, is zere somezing ze matter?" Gavril asked, the hatred of Traian was still there, but for the moment it was covered up by confusion; his study of Demonessian society had been brief and he was just as unaware of their concept of damnatio memoriae as most of the other Cetatsens in there room. "Yeah, usually people are at least a little curious about ze fustangiu," Gavrila added, confused as well. Then Andreea spoke up, clearing up the confusion; she was, after all, the one who was designated as the face of Cetatsenia, and as such was familiar with many of the cultures around the world. So she was aware of what the Demonessians most likely thought the reasoning behind the burnt portrait was. "You do not need to worry about asking about Traian," she said to the Demonessians, but to Jia Li in particular, "Cetatsenia has no concept of damnatio memoriae; his portrait is burnt out not to try and remove him from memory, but because his successor deemed it to be a fitting part of the punishment for his depravity." "Thank you for clearing that up," Jia Li replied gratefully. It was true that it was difficult to carry out damnatio memoriae in modern society, but it was something they would have to attempt with her sister once she was apprehended. At the very least, Princess Hikari would be charged with treason and a conviction would earn her damnatio memoriae, a particularly painful punishment for a monarch who had been inseparable from her sister for so many years. She turned to Gavril. "I thought he was damnatio memoriae, as your sister said, but in Demoness it is called nake - the 'Non-persons'. We cannot talk about them for any reason and they cease to exist," she explained. She nodded toward the portrait. "Things like that occur when objects of the person cannot be removed or otherwise destroyed. What is it that he did?" |
