If one was to take a place from the nation of Demoness to Cetatsenia, one would most likely see the dichotomy that the nation was rather known for. In the southern parts of the nation one would notice the highlands, heavily forested and almost untouched by man aside from the winding roads and the occasional town. But further north, the terrain would give away to the lowlands of the Centric Basin. This land was flat, and lacked the expansive forests, though there were smaller isolated forests. But the main difference one would notice would be the level of development, it was dominated by a large amount of farmland as the lowland soil was incredibly fertile, but there was also the occasional city, bustling with people. Albraustana-zid was one such city, and it was the primate city of Cetatsenia, the richest and most populous and most important of them all. It was built along both sides of the great Albastru River that ran through much of Cetatsenia, though most of it was on the southern bank of the river. This was because of the simple fact that Albraustana-zid had begun life as three separate forts and settlements built along the river. Albrau and Stana had been built on the Southern bank, and over time had grown together until they were finally united into Albraustana. And while Zid would eventually become part of the greater whole, for a long time it was simply considered a city separated from the capital only by the river. Since it had grown organically over the numerous years, and had once been three separate cities, the streets and roads had a habit of being winding and could be complicated to navigate for those unfamiliar with them who had no map. Though the roads had over time been widened and revamped in order to accommodate cars, and the newest sections of the city on the outskirts actually had a gridded street plan. As it was the middle of the day, the streets were currently filled with cars and buses, and the sidewalks filled with pedestrians, while the newest addition to the city's transportation network, the subway system, ran below the streets. While there was a number of attractions in the city, such as the museums and baths, one of the most prominent is the Palatul Regal, the Royal Palace. The site of the original settlement of Albrau and lying atop a hill, it has been torn down or otherwise destroyed and then subsequently rebuilt several times throughout history. The most recent being the ascension of Ioan I to the throne of Cetatsenia, though it has been renovated and updated since then. The Palace itself is surrounded by a wall that rings the entirety of the hill, with only a single gate leading up to it. The wall is patrolled by a special corps of Cetatsenian soldiers, easily identified by their bright blue ceremonial uniforms and ornate, pointed helmets. After that, a road lead up to the palace proper, an expansive building with a stone exterior that shared more in common with a medieval castle than what one thinks of when they hear the word 'palace'. It was home to a fair number of servants, as well as the guardsmen, and a small number of government officials. Most of those lived out in the city, and worked in their own buildings. It was absolutely huge, and in front of it was an expansive pool of water. Overall, it was an impressive sight that could be seen from a good portion of the city. At the moment, however, Voivode Gavril IV Suveraneshti was not at his home in the palace. Rather he was at the airport, which had been cleared of any citizens besides him, the guards arrayed with him, and those who worked there; all flights to this airport had either been delayed or rerouted to other nearby airports. Today was an important day, as this was the decided upon day of Jia Li's visit to Cetatsenia. As two nations whose relationship could be accurately described as "mutually neutral", this was a rather important meeting, and Gavril did not want to mess anything up. So he stood alongside his older sister Andreea, the Steward of Cetatsenia, in the airport, ready to head out onto the tarmac to greet the Empress as soon as her plane set down. Gavril shook his head and sighed, he didn't understand why people would willing hide away any documents. He understood that it was done in the past, and why, but this was the modern era. To him, the practice was archaic and had no place in the modern world. But to actually say that to Jia Li's face would probably be rude, and so he didn't. "But surely zere are zings ze artifacts can be compared to, right? And I do not zink a particularly large sample of it would be necessary to date zings," he said. "Or do you just not bozer?" Gavrila asked, giving voice to a thought that Gavril himself had had, but deemed it prudent not to say it, lest he offend their guests. |

Jia Li shook her head. "The ones that we could identify we already have. The rest are in the care of archaeologists and anthropologists." She shrugged. "But there are some things you just need context for. There are a set of masks that we found in the Blasphemous Shrine some time ago and while we've made some educated guesses, there really is no way to know what they were used for or why. It is also rather unfortunate that we have never discovered any documents mentioning them or even why they were hidden. That could have simply been an oversight and they weren't purposely hidden or, given their location, it may have been on purpose." |

"Well to be fair, a lot of archaeology is educated guessing. For example, a good part of what we 'know' about the Alb culture are simply educated guesses," Gavril said, "We have ze artifacts, but we cannot decipher zeir language and we have nozing more contemporary to compare zem to." |

Jia Li shook her head. "I always found dead languages to be a shame, especially if there are no ways to decipher them. It's like the culture remains dead. At least if we can speak the language, we could remember their culture." She thought of Feoras and its many cultures. "Then again, it might be much worse for cultures with oral histories and no writing at all. They only preserve their memories through story and that is more easily lost or forgotten." |

"Eh, dead cultures are dead. Whezer we know ze language or not does not change a damn zing," Gavrila said, shrugging. "But if zeir language is dead, zen ze culture is deader zan it ozerwise would be, is it not?" Andreea replied. "If you stab a corpse, does zat make it deader?" Gavrila said simply, "Dead is just dead." "Zat is a razer narrowminded way of zinking, Gavrila. Absolutes like zat do not exist wiz cultures," Gavril said as he shook his head, to which Gavrila just shrugged again, before turning to Jia Li, "I would not underestimate oral history. I have no personal experience, but I have read zat some groups are able to remember an astonishing amount of oral history. Far more zan I could commit to memory and recite." |

Jia Li shrugged. "I don't disagree, but-" "But the difference is that written history is set whereas oral history may change over time," Xel interjected. "'History' may change over time as well, but you will always have a record of what believed history was at a set point." He turned to Gavrila. "Also, dead is dead. However, you may still learn from dead cultures. Unfortunately, if we cannot read their language then their knowledge is lost." |

"Exactly what I was saying," Gavril said to Xel, before turning and giving a pointed look at her cousins. "You say zat as zough written history does not change," Gavril said, ignoring Gavrila and focusing on Xel, "Unless you have original documents written by someone who lived in ze time period, nozing is certain. Copies can be subject to bias, manipulation, misinterpretations, and the like. And ze problem is only worse if ze original source is written in anozer language. As much as I love history, I know zat it is impossible to truly know anyzing about ze vast majority of mankind's past." |

"No, I agree that history is also influenced by bias. It only takes a cursory glance at much of our church's documents to realize this," Xel replied. "Nor am I arguing that history is indeed immutable. However, it is more likely that to know the evolution of a recorded narrative throughout time, especially if you have multiple sources and, especially with sources in other languages because they provide another point of view," he continued. Jia Li looked at him, wondering if he might actually speak at length. Her interest in history had only recently bloomed, but the subject had always held his interest. She'd sometimes dismissed this as him learning in her stead - as he often helped her study - but there were occasions when he appeared to hold a deeper knowledge. "It is actually best to take into account contemporary narratives when studying or discussing our nation's history," he continued. "Aside from a vested interest in maintaining the divine nature of the Empresses, the Church also sought to control recorded history. Though, to be fair, the Church was also one of the few, if only, sources of scholarship throughout much of our history and the primary source of historians and depository of knowledge, but that does not excuse the excision of some documents." |

"Well alright zen, well-" Gavril began, and then stopped and took a cursory glance around. He cleared his throat before speaking again, "Actually, perhaps zis conversation should be left for anozer time. When we are not standing in ze middle of a museum exhibit." "Nice," Gavrila replied with a smirk. Gavril just rolled his eyes, she'd been in the conversation as well, even if only briefly. "Anyway, do you want to get a better look here, or continue on to ze next exhibit?" |

Jia Li giggled; she rather believed it was the appropriate place to have such a debate and she enjoyed that her husband was being talkative, but it was obvious that Gavril did not believe they should continue the discussion at their location. "I'm ready to move on," she said. She weaved her arm into her husband's. He looked briefly disappointed that they would not continue, but he followed her lead. |
