If one was to take a place from the nation of Demoness to Cetatsenia, one would most likely see the dichotomy that the nation was rather known for. In the southern parts of the nation one would notice the highlands, heavily forested and almost untouched by man aside from the winding roads and the occasional town. But further north, the terrain would give away to the lowlands of the Centric Basin. This land was flat, and lacked the expansive forests, though there were smaller isolated forests. But the main difference one would notice would be the level of development, it was dominated by a large amount of farmland as the lowland soil was incredibly fertile, but there was also the occasional city, bustling with people. Albraustana-zid was one such city, and it was the primate city of Cetatsenia, the richest and most populous and most important of them all. It was built along both sides of the great Albastru River that ran through much of Cetatsenia, though most of it was on the southern bank of the river. This was because of the simple fact that Albraustana-zid had begun life as three separate forts and settlements built along the river. Albrau and Stana had been built on the Southern bank, and over time had grown together until they were finally united into Albraustana. And while Zid would eventually become part of the greater whole, for a long time it was simply considered a city separated from the capital only by the river. Since it had grown organically over the numerous years, and had once been three separate cities, the streets and roads had a habit of being winding and could be complicated to navigate for those unfamiliar with them who had no map. Though the roads had over time been widened and revamped in order to accommodate cars, and the newest sections of the city on the outskirts actually had a gridded street plan. As it was the middle of the day, the streets were currently filled with cars and buses, and the sidewalks filled with pedestrians, while the newest addition to the city's transportation network, the subway system, ran below the streets. While there was a number of attractions in the city, such as the museums and baths, one of the most prominent is the Palatul Regal, the Royal Palace. The site of the original settlement of Albrau and lying atop a hill, it has been torn down or otherwise destroyed and then subsequently rebuilt several times throughout history. The most recent being the ascension of Ioan I to the throne of Cetatsenia, though it has been renovated and updated since then. The Palace itself is surrounded by a wall that rings the entirety of the hill, with only a single gate leading up to it. The wall is patrolled by a special corps of Cetatsenian soldiers, easily identified by their bright blue ceremonial uniforms and ornate, pointed helmets. After that, a road lead up to the palace proper, an expansive building with a stone exterior that shared more in common with a medieval castle than what one thinks of when they hear the word 'palace'. It was home to a fair number of servants, as well as the guardsmen, and a small number of government officials. Most of those lived out in the city, and worked in their own buildings. It was absolutely huge, and in front of it was an expansive pool of water. Overall, it was an impressive sight that could be seen from a good portion of the city. At the moment, however, Voivode Gavril IV Suveraneshti was not at his home in the palace. Rather he was at the airport, which had been cleared of any citizens besides him, the guards arrayed with him, and those who worked there; all flights to this airport had either been delayed or rerouted to other nearby airports. Today was an important day, as this was the decided upon day of Jia Li's visit to Cetatsenia. As two nations whose relationship could be accurately described as "mutually neutral", this was a rather important meeting, and Gavril did not want to mess anything up. So he stood alongside his older sister Andreea, the Steward of Cetatsenia, in the airport, ready to head out onto the tarmac to greet the Empress as soon as her plane set down. "Well it was implied," Gavrila said, shrugging, "If zey killed off almost everyone who was not Demonessian, zat sounds like genoci-" The Knezinja's comment was cut off by Gavril clearing his throat. "Gavrila, zis is not ze time and place for zis," he said, giving a pointed look at his cousin. She simply shrugged again, and wandered off into the exhibit on her own. "Ugh, We are sorry about her," Andreea said with a sigh, "Again." "Zough she did sort of have a point," Gavril said, "Ze way you phrased it made it sound like genocide, and genocide was not as common in ze ancient past as you may zink." |

"I simply said they were likely killed. I didn't state that we killed them for being different!" Jia Li replied. Then she shook her head. "The early years of the Empire were not well-documented and since the documents we have only record certain events, it's difficult to tell their fate. However, it is likely they were killed because of Aatsu-" "Abt," Xel corrected; the pronunciation was foreign to Morai and it wasn't even certain "Abt" was the correct name. "They were the allies of the Unnamed and were hunted down and killed after his imprisonment. It is possible they were mistaken for the Abt or that they were the Abt, in which case that isn't genocide but war." |

"Even in war you do not exterminate entire cultures," Gavril replied, "I am not saying it was necessarily genocide, especially considering ze lack of documentation. But if you try to say zat killing zem all was not genocide because you were at war, zen you are wrong." |

"They were rianshuufu. There is no grey area. They are all dangerous!" Jia Li replied emphatically. Xel, who had regarded her quizzically throughout the rest of the exchange, chose to interject then. He thought it was odd that her blood pressure had risen and he would have to ask her later what her thoughts were; he could not read them now. She was normally a pacifist and even apologetic for the Demonessians' past behavior, but she was taking the imaginary threat of a demon race to the nascent Demonessians rather seriously. It was odd since to his knowledge she had reconciled most of the stories as allegory and had only drawn the existence of the Goddesses as true. Xel wrapped his arm around his wife and gently stroked her arms as he addressed Gavril. "History, even in non-Church documents, is very discrete in the early Bible and steeped in myth- legend. The early enemies of the Demonessians were the allies of an evil god that sought to exterminate our people, so it was reasonable to do the same to them. The Bible focuses only on the destruction of the Abt and Rianshuufu, but we know that other peoples existed because their descendants still live in isolated pockets. Most of them even follow Morante. However, as far as our records are concerned, they were always small pockets of people and appeared out of nowhere." |

Both Gavril and Andreea were surprised by Jia Li's reaction; she certainly did not seem to be the kind of person to defend the extermination of entire peoples in the past, even the ancient past. But it did make sense if she truly believed them to have all been a race of legendary demon-worshipers. But neither of them put any stock into that, simply believing it to be an embellishment thanks to the exceptionally religious nature of Demoness, and its society and government. In fact Gavril was somewhat disappointed in her, though he did his best not to let it show. In real life almost nothing was ever grey, especially when it came to the ancient past like that. In his mind he was already rationalizing the Demonessian view of events as simply an excuse for the extermination. "I see," was Gavril's only response. "So, shall we continue on wiz ze tour?" Andreea said, attempting to steer attention from the conversation elsewhere. Gavril nodded, "Yes, I zink zat would be for ze best." |

Jia Li nodded and Xel leaned into her ear and whispered in Morai. "Jade, what's the matter? You normally renounce the actions of our ancestors, especially when it comes to aboriginal people." She shook her head. "I don't know. I guess it just hit a nerve," she replied softly. After a moment's pause, she added, "My thoughts drifted to the siege and how the forces nearly wiped out our people. It makes sense to want revenge, even if it was overboard." He kept silent, thinking about how regretful she had been over her actions, which had led to the civil war. "I just never thought of them as anything but animals who attacked us out of nowhere, not as a people with children, and never as the aboriginal people, and it just made me feel so angry. He nearly caused us to wipe each other out and they came to clean up the mess that remained." He frowned; something else was really bothering her, but now was not the time to pursue the matter. He didn't know what had truly happened during the battle of which she thought and there was little rational thought he could interject. "Maybe I've spent too much time reading about Vultania," she said and sighed. In some folk traditions, Vultania was the Goddess of Honor and Vengeance, though she was not acknowledged by Morante, and had led the pursuit against the Abt. Her kidnapping by the Unnamed had been key in starting a dissonance that had led to an early civil war between the two Tribes, who blamed each other for the disappearance, and at the height of the war the Abt attacked in order to wipe them both out. Though the battle was central to the narrative of Chronicles and 0 Chronicles in the Bible, much of Vultania's actions were removed to the Apocrypha and there had been a popular movement to restore her as a true goddess. Jia Li had been reading the texts as well as speaking with their cousin, Yuri, who was a secret worshiper of the deity. |

Gavril nodded as well, silently thankful that the conversation was over. He didn't view Jia Li as any worse of a person than before, but it had been a definite reminder that the two of them came from very different cultures with different views of the world. Not that he hadn't been aware of that before, but it was easy to forget how different cultures could be sometimes. "That was... unexpected," he said to Andreea, speaking in Cetatsenian, "I'm glad that Gavrila was not around to hear it though." At the mention of that possibility Gavril's sister very nearly shuddered in horror. Gavrila would have, without a doubt, agreed with Gavril and Andreea; the major difference being that Gavrila would've made her feelings on the matter incredibly clear. And the thought of Gavrila making a scene in the middle of the museum was not a particularly pleasant one. "Yes, we can definitely be thankful for that," she said, shaking her head. The exhibit that they were currently in was dedicated to the earliest period of Intermarium's control of the region. It was dedicated to not only the invasion itself but to the cultural assimilation of the people already living into the Aramyk culture. The invasion was a relatively quick one, thanks to the area being politically fractured at the time. And the cultural conversion was peaceful due to a combination of factors. The factors included such things as Aramyk settlers moving into the fertile basin and native nobility sending their children to be educated by Aramyks or bringing in Aramyk tutors. "You know, one can only wonder what would have happened had ze area managed to fight off Intermarium's invasion," Gavril said idly at one point, then looked over at the Empress and laughed, "Well, I certainly would not be standing here talking to you, would I? And Cetatsenia would be a far different place." |

Jia Li managed to raise a smile; her thoughts were still elsewhere and though she was not actually angry with Gavril and Andrei, her anger was still directed at them. "I imagine it would have been. The Amaryks had a considerable influence over Cetatsenia, ne?" |

Gavril nodded his head in response, "Probably had ze greatest influence of any culture, really." "Honestly, I zink zat ze area would be so different from what it is today zat it would be impossible to imagine," Andreea added, "It is only one change, but Intermarium's conquest, in a way, laid ze foundation for modern-day Cetatsenia." |

"Why were they so receptive to Intermarium's influence?" Jia Li asked curiously. |
