If one was to take a place from the nation of Demoness to Cetatsenia, one would most likely see the dichotomy that the nation was rather known for. In the southern parts of the nation one would notice the highlands, heavily forested and almost untouched by man aside from the winding roads and the occasional town. But further north, the terrain would give away to the lowlands of the Centric Basin. This land was flat, and lacked the expansive forests, though there were smaller isolated forests. But the main difference one would notice would be the level of development, it was dominated by a large amount of farmland as the lowland soil was incredibly fertile, but there was also the occasional city, bustling with people.

Albraustana-zid was one such city, and it was the primate city of Cetatsenia, the richest and most populous and most important of them all. It was built along both sides of the great Albastru River that ran through much of Cetatsenia, though most of it was on the southern bank of the river. This was because of the simple fact that Albraustana-zid had begun life as three separate forts and settlements built along the river. Albrau and Stana had been built on the Southern bank, and over time had grown together until they were finally united into Albraustana. And while Zid would eventually become part of the greater whole, for a long time it was simply considered a city separated from the capital only by the river.

Since it had grown organically over the numerous years, and had once been three separate cities, the streets and roads had a habit of being winding and could be complicated to navigate for those unfamiliar with them who had no map. Though the roads had over time been widened and revamped in order to accommodate cars, and the newest sections of the city on the outskirts actually had a gridded street plan. As it was the middle of the day, the streets were currently filled with cars and buses, and the sidewalks filled with pedestrians, while the newest addition to the city's transportation network, the subway system, ran below the streets.

While there was a number of attractions in the city, such as the museums and baths, one of the most prominent is the Palatul Regal, the Royal Palace. The site of the original settlement of Albrau and lying atop a hill, it has been torn down or otherwise destroyed and then subsequently rebuilt several times throughout history. The most recent being the ascension of Ioan I to the throne of Cetatsenia, though it has been renovated and updated since then.

The Palace itself is surrounded by a wall that rings the entirety of the hill, with only a single gate leading up to it. The wall is patrolled by a special corps of Cetatsenian soldiers, easily identified by their bright blue ceremonial uniforms and ornate, pointed helmets. After that, a road lead up to the palace proper, an expansive building with a stone exterior that shared more in common with a medieval castle than what one thinks of when they hear the word 'palace'. It was home to a fair number of servants, as well as the guardsmen, and a small number of government officials. Most of those lived out in the city, and worked in their own buildings. It was absolutely huge, and in front of it was an expansive pool of water. Overall, it was an impressive sight that could be seen from a good portion of the city.

At the moment, however, Voivode Gavril IV Suveraneshti was not at his home in the palace. Rather he was at the airport, which had been cleared of any citizens besides him, the guards arrayed with him, and those who worked there; all flights to this airport had either been delayed or rerouted to other nearby airports. Today was an important day, as this was the decided upon day of Jia Li's visit to Cetatsenia. As two nations whose relationship could be accurately described as "mutually neutral", this was a rather important meeting, and Gavril did not want to mess anything up. So he stood alongside his older sister Andreea, the Steward of Cetatsenia, in the airport, ready to head out onto the tarmac to greet the Empress as soon as her plane set down.

Gavril nodded in understanding, but with the confusion gone the disdain and contempt was once again clearly visible on his face. "Traian was... Ze very opposite of everyzing zat a ruler should be. He abused his power for his own personal gain and cared for none ozer zan himself. And what makes him even worse was zat he was a sick and depraved person," Gavril explained. After this he took a moment to compose himself, as he was about to reveal what had to be the greatest shame of House Suveraneshti. It wasn't as though it was a secret, the information was freely available, but Gavril still found it difficult to say what the man had done. Especially considering Gavril was a direct descendant of the man.

"Traian was probably one of ze most prolific rapists in history," Gavril said finally, "He decided early on in his reign zat it was his right as Voivode to take his subjects whenever he desired, any and all of zem. Every day and every night women, girls, men, and boys were all subjected to his twisted desires. Historians estimate ze number of victims to be in ze zousands."

"Ze man ruled zrough fear," Gavrila added, uncharacteristically serious, "Ze soldiers and ze nobles served him faizfully because it protected zem and zeir family from his predations. If you were even suspected of betraying him, zen you were imprisoned and subjected to his depraved whims. Alongside your family, anyone zey zought had helped you, and zeir families."

The Demonessians demeanor changed, replacing the previous purposeful indifference with anger equal to the Cetatsens. Being that Demoness had been both an egalitarian society and a matriarchy, rape had never been tolerated, even as trophies of war, and was punished severely; the punishment of male and female castration was still on the law books despite protests from international activists. "I'm surprised he did not have an 'accident' to prematurely end his reign," Jia Li replied derisively.

She could not comment much on Traian's treatment of anyone who may betray him either; Demoness had carried out similar sentences against rebels in Feoras and other colonies because it, too, had ruled through fear and created hardship for many years.

"I am certain zere were numerous people who would have liked to cause him to have an accident," Gavrila said, "But ze foul zings zat man did to people were more zan enough to stop zem from trying. It was not worz it if zey had been caught."

"Zere were peasant rebellions," Gavril added, "But zey were swiftly put down. Ze peasants and Traian's soldiers were fighting for ze same reason, to protect zemselves and zeir families. Ze only difference was zat ze soldiers has actual equipment and training."

"And ze sick fuck died peacefully in his goddamned bed," Gavrila added, her anger at this fact quite clear.

"That does seem deeply unfair," Jia Li replied. "What of his children? Did they inherit his character?" She also wondered if only legitimate children were able to inherit under Cetatsen law; with a man like Traian, she wouldn't be surprised if he'd had hundreds of bastards.

"Zankfully not, zough he only managed to have a single legitimate child, named Liliana," Gavril said, "In fact, his daughter was known to have not gotten married until she was in her zirties, and according to historical documents it was anywhere from a monz to a year before zey actually consummated zeir marriage. It is generally agreed upon zat she was psychologically traumatized from being sodomized by her fazer."

"And it was zat woman who, when she came to ze zrone, called ze Cadaver Tribunal," Gavrila added, her expression having changed; it now wasn't anger, but rather a vengeful grin, "She had his body dug up and put on trial for his crimes." Then she glanced over at her cousin, "Andreea, you want to take it from here? I'm sure you know what she did to ze bastard better zan I do."

Andreea nodded to her cousin, and then turned to the Demonessians, "She had Traian's corpse flayed, burnt, and zen cut up into six pieces. Five of zem were taken to ze five Knezates, taken out into ze wilderness and unceremoniously buried in unmarked graves. Ze sixth was taken out to sea and dropped overboard. Zen she had any image of Traian's face destroyed, including zis portrait; zis was because ze only zing Traian loved was himself. He was a vain man, and thought himself to be ze most beautiful person in ze world; Liliana made sure nobody would ever see his face again. And her final act was to ban ze usage of ze name Traian by any children of ze House Suveraneshti.

"With a man like that, and a punishment like that, I'm surprised you did not practice damnatio memoriae," Jia Li replied.

"I'm surprised the 'punishment' wasn't worse," Xel added dryly. He thought of Jia Li's troubles with her father - ranging from simple arguments to psychological abuse - and how he'd intensely he'd reacted to that; if Ashuril had dared to do anything worse, he would have died, regardless of the consequences. It was a shame that Liliana hadn't had a similar protector.

"Ze concept of erasing someone from history is alien to Cetatsen culture. It's not somezing we have ever done, and likely never even crossed anyone's mind to do such to Traian," Gavril explained, "And I agree, ze punishment should have been far worse for what he did. Unfortunately zere is only so much one can do to a corpse."

It was around this point that Gavrila glanced at Aurel again, and this time upon seeing him muttered, "Rahat..." He was rigid, even more so than normal, and while he attempted to keep his face emotionless it was rather easy to see that his eyes were burning with hatred. Besides his expression, his hands were hidden behind his back and were both clenched tightly in shaking fists.

Gavrila stopped and thought for a moment, he eyes darting every which way as her thought raced. Then suddenly she looked at her watch and smiled a smile of relief. Then she turned to Aurel, and lifted Behemoz off of her shoulder. Then she held it out to the elderly servant, "I zink it is time for his baz, go find zat one servant girl, Marina; I believe zat's one of her jobs."

Aurel looked down at the rat for a long moment and then slowly reached out with his still shaking hands and took Behemoth from Gavrila. "As you wish doamna," he said, his voice nearly monotone as he was obviously trying too hard to control his tone, then he looked back up to Gavrila, "Sunt bine. Nu am nevoie să plece, pot să mă descurc singur."

Gavrila just crossed her arms, "Du-te. Ai nevoie de ceva pentru a lua gandul de la asta."

"Cum doriti, doamna," he said, and then turned and made his way out of the Great Hall, in search of the servant Marina. Gavrila let out a small sigh of relief, and then turned back to the group.

All three "guards" noticed Aurel's reaction, since they were trained to read body language, but Ariana only assessed it for any threat Aurel may pose and dismissed it; she was not known for her sympathy. Makoto, curious, watched him leave, but his attention soon returned to his job. Only Xel continued to wonder about Aurel's reaction after he left the room and was partially removed from the conversation with his distraction.

Jia Li, however, remained unaware. "Of course," she said to Gavril. "I forget that there are differences between our viewpoints. Aside from damnatio memoriae, there are other punishments that you can carry out against a corpse that we believe affects the soul on its way to reincarnation. We either would have dumped the entire corpse into the ocean or leave the pieces unburied so that animals would consume it. In addition to what was already done, of course."

"Well, Cetatsens do not believe in reincarnation, and we do not believe zat anyzing one does to a corpse effects ze soul's journey to ze afterlife," Gavril explained, "Zough it is considered highly disrespectful to desecrate a corpse. And generally a noble is interred wizin zeir family's crypt, and ze grave is labeled wiz what one would find on a tombstone. So having Traian's corpse desecrated in such a way and buried in unmarked graves was a grave insult towards ze man. One which I, and every Cetatsen, believe was fully warranted."

She nodded. "Shall we continue?" she asked.
