If one was to take a place from the nation of Demoness to Cetatsenia, one would most likely see the dichotomy that the nation was rather known for. In the southern parts of the nation one would notice the highlands, heavily forested and almost untouched by man aside from the winding roads and the occasional town. But further north, the terrain would give away to the lowlands of the Centric Basin. This land was flat, and lacked the expansive forests, though there were smaller isolated forests. But the main difference one would notice would be the level of development, it was dominated by a large amount of farmland as the lowland soil was incredibly fertile, but there was also the occasional city, bustling with people. Albraustana-zid was one such city, and it was the primate city of Cetatsenia, the richest and most populous and most important of them all. It was built along both sides of the great Albastru River that ran through much of Cetatsenia, though most of it was on the southern bank of the river. This was because of the simple fact that Albraustana-zid had begun life as three separate forts and settlements built along the river. Albrau and Stana had been built on the Southern bank, and over time had grown together until they were finally united into Albraustana. And while Zid would eventually become part of the greater whole, for a long time it was simply considered a city separated from the capital only by the river. Since it had grown organically over the numerous years, and had once been three separate cities, the streets and roads had a habit of being winding and could be complicated to navigate for those unfamiliar with them who had no map. Though the roads had over time been widened and revamped in order to accommodate cars, and the newest sections of the city on the outskirts actually had a gridded street plan. As it was the middle of the day, the streets were currently filled with cars and buses, and the sidewalks filled with pedestrians, while the newest addition to the city's transportation network, the subway system, ran below the streets. While there was a number of attractions in the city, such as the museums and baths, one of the most prominent is the Palatul Regal, the Royal Palace. The site of the original settlement of Albrau and lying atop a hill, it has been torn down or otherwise destroyed and then subsequently rebuilt several times throughout history. The most recent being the ascension of Ioan I to the throne of Cetatsenia, though it has been renovated and updated since then. The Palace itself is surrounded by a wall that rings the entirety of the hill, with only a single gate leading up to it. The wall is patrolled by a special corps of Cetatsenian soldiers, easily identified by their bright blue ceremonial uniforms and ornate, pointed helmets. After that, a road lead up to the palace proper, an expansive building with a stone exterior that shared more in common with a medieval castle than what one thinks of when they hear the word 'palace'. It was home to a fair number of servants, as well as the guardsmen, and a small number of government officials. Most of those lived out in the city, and worked in their own buildings. It was absolutely huge, and in front of it was an expansive pool of water. Overall, it was an impressive sight that could be seen from a good portion of the city. At the moment, however, Voivode Gavril IV Suveraneshti was not at his home in the palace. Rather he was at the airport, which had been cleared of any citizens besides him, the guards arrayed with him, and those who worked there; all flights to this airport had either been delayed or rerouted to other nearby airports. Today was an important day, as this was the decided upon day of Jia Li's visit to Cetatsenia. As two nations whose relationship could be accurately described as "mutually neutral", this was a rather important meeting, and Gavril did not want to mess anything up. So he stood alongside his older sister Andreea, the Steward of Cetatsenia, in the airport, ready to head out onto the tarmac to greet the Empress as soon as her plane set down. "Well, it is good zat he at least cares," Gavrila said, smiling now, but still wiz a hint of sadness. "I agree, it is always good when a parent realizes where zey have gone wrong and tried to fix it," Gavril replied. Then Andreea turned to her brother and nodded. Then she said, half-joking and half-serious, "Do you need a hug too?" Gavril simply shook his head and smiled, "No, Andreea. I am fine." Jia Li's talk of reconciling with her father was good, but it hurt a little for all three of the Cetatsens present. Because of Gavrila's terrible relationship with her parents, and the fact that she hated them and essentially ignored them meant they would most likely never have any kind of reconciliation. In fact, she had tried before, only for it to end in failure. And as for Andreea and Gavril, they had a father who had loved them, but had put his job as Voivode above his family. And there was absolutely no chance of reconciliation there due to his death. |

Jia Li respected the silence for a few minutes before saying, "I see we all have parental issues." It had reached a level of obviousness where she had to comment. Xel gave a slight smirk since his mother was with them. |

Gavrila looked around for a short moment before saying rather, "Well, you sure as hell got that right." Then she raised and stretched her arms, moving Andreea's hand from her shoulder in the process, and then clasped her hands down in front of her. "Well, what say we move away from zis razer depressing topic ona continue on wiz ze tour? Or talk about somezing else?" she said, grinning, then looked at Jia Li, "Zough if you really wanna know more, you could always meet me down in ze kitchen later for a friendly drink." Both Gavril and Andreea have their cousin a sideways glance. They knew that she wasn't particularly fond of silences, and that her mood could change rather rapidly, but it could still surprise them how fast she could go from one topic to another. Then Gavril cleared his throat and spoke up, "Yes, well for ze moment, what say we just continue ze tour? We are almost to ze modern Voivodes, and Cetatsenia's recent history." |

Jia Li considered Gavrila's offer. She wouldn't imbibe any alcohol - she was, of course, one of the few people allergic to alcohol - but it did provide her with an opportunity to find out more about Gavrila's childhood. They might even compare notes. Anyone Jia Li spoke to about her father already knew about Ashuril in one aspect or another - most had been present for his abuse at least once - so it was difficult to get an unbiased opinion about the matter. Even Ashuril's mother - her grandmother - refused to speak on the matter and treated her distantly, solely like the Empress; she suspected this had to do with her status as a Matriarch. She nodded. "Yes. Let's leave this behind us for now." She smiled. When no one was looking, she glanced back at Ariana. To her, the woman was the mother she never had, loving and kind, but to her husband, she was a distant stranger. Even though Ariana was his mother, she had only ever treated him as a tool, someone to protect her twin "daughters"; Ariana treated her actual daughter the same distant way. Jia Li could never reconcile her "mother" with Xel's mother and he often said her behavior didn't bother him, that it was to be expected from a High Guardsman wife, but she wondered if it secretly had. She knew he had ceased to trust Ariana, even though he was forced to work with her and Jia Li still trusted her, so that was all that mattered. |

Gavril nodded and smiled, happy to get away from the conversation. It wasn't that he was uncomfortable, but there were better things they could be talking about. Not to mention Gavrila inviting the Empress for a drink, it was unexpected and while there wasn't really anything wrong with her doing so, it was still not something people tended to do with a visiting Head of State. And they continued the tour, moving fairly quickly through the remaining Voivodes until they came to portrait of a rather plain-looking man with thick-rimmed glasses. "Zis is Gavril III. He was ze Voivode who ruled during ze first Great War," Gavril said, "And he was also ze Voivode who created ze short-lived Republican Voivodeship during ze Interwar period." "Short-lived is an understatement," Gavrila said, chuckling, "It only lasted 20 years." |

Jia Li nodded. "I remember him. I believe my grandmother and great great grandmother had dealings with him." She frowned; history wasn't her greatest subject. "Or maybe it was his successor. It was just before our embassies were re-established." |

"Yes, if I remember correctly it was under him zat ze embassies closed," Gavril said, "Or razer, it was under ze Cetatsen Senat zat ze embassies closed." "Gavril III gave up his absolute power as Voivode due to unrest among ze populace of Cetatsenia following ze First Great War," Andreea explained, "He was still Voivode, but he had no power. Instead, power was concentrated in ze hands of ze Senat, a body of elected officials. And ze wished to distance zemselves from real monarchies, and so closed ze embassy wiz Demoness." "And zen everyzing changed when ze Socialists attacked," Gavrila added. Edited by Cetatsenia, Dec 11 2013, 11:36 PM.

Jia Li nodded. "A great many things started then, including a great many deaths," she added sadly. Though she had not studied the war closely, she still felt respect and mourned for the lives lost. "My grandmother spent the majority discussing strategies with the military since her mother had died unexpectedly early and the Empress' health was failing." |

"Yes, a great many deazs indeed," Gavril said solemnly, "And a great many of zem innocent Cetatsens." "Ioan II actually spent most of his time hiding out among ze forests of Cetatsenia, and actually fighting among his people," Gavrila said, "Ze man took the root of ze word 'Voivode' pretty seriously, ze crazy bastard." It was fairly obvious she didn't mean it as an insult, and if anything she seemed to respect the man and his choice. Then she thought for a moment and said, "It's original meaning was somezing along ze lines of 'warlord' in case you were curious." Gavril nodded, "Yes, my great grandfazer did not relish ze zought of hiding out in anozer country waiting for ozers to retake his land for him. He wished to help do it himself." |

"My grandmother helped with the war effort, but she was entirely forbidden from actually going near combat since her mother had died, though I believe it also had something to do with her husband, who was frequently ill, and the fact that she hadn't provided an heir yet. I don't know if she would have charged into battle like Ioan, but she was certainly stubborn." "I think that's where you got it from," Xel teased and she smiled. "But Ioan showed the signs of a good leader as well. You can't call it your country if someone else handed it to you." |
