If one was to take a place from the nation of Demoness to Cetatsenia, one would most likely see the dichotomy that the nation was rather known for. In the southern parts of the nation one would notice the highlands, heavily forested and almost untouched by man aside from the winding roads and the occasional town. But further north, the terrain would give away to the lowlands of the Centric Basin. This land was flat, and lacked the expansive forests, though there were smaller isolated forests. But the main difference one would notice would be the level of development, it was dominated by a large amount of farmland as the lowland soil was incredibly fertile, but there was also the occasional city, bustling with people. Albraustana-zid was one such city, and it was the primate city of Cetatsenia, the richest and most populous and most important of them all. It was built along both sides of the great Albastru River that ran through much of Cetatsenia, though most of it was on the southern bank of the river. This was because of the simple fact that Albraustana-zid had begun life as three separate forts and settlements built along the river. Albrau and Stana had been built on the Southern bank, and over time had grown together until they were finally united into Albraustana. And while Zid would eventually become part of the greater whole, for a long time it was simply considered a city separated from the capital only by the river. Since it had grown organically over the numerous years, and had once been three separate cities, the streets and roads had a habit of being winding and could be complicated to navigate for those unfamiliar with them who had no map. Though the roads had over time been widened and revamped in order to accommodate cars, and the newest sections of the city on the outskirts actually had a gridded street plan. As it was the middle of the day, the streets were currently filled with cars and buses, and the sidewalks filled with pedestrians, while the newest addition to the city's transportation network, the subway system, ran below the streets. While there was a number of attractions in the city, such as the museums and baths, one of the most prominent is the Palatul Regal, the Royal Palace. The site of the original settlement of Albrau and lying atop a hill, it has been torn down or otherwise destroyed and then subsequently rebuilt several times throughout history. The most recent being the ascension of Ioan I to the throne of Cetatsenia, though it has been renovated and updated since then. The Palace itself is surrounded by a wall that rings the entirety of the hill, with only a single gate leading up to it. The wall is patrolled by a special corps of Cetatsenian soldiers, easily identified by their bright blue ceremonial uniforms and ornate, pointed helmets. After that, a road lead up to the palace proper, an expansive building with a stone exterior that shared more in common with a medieval castle than what one thinks of when they hear the word 'palace'. It was home to a fair number of servants, as well as the guardsmen, and a small number of government officials. Most of those lived out in the city, and worked in their own buildings. It was absolutely huge, and in front of it was an expansive pool of water. Overall, it was an impressive sight that could be seen from a good portion of the city. At the moment, however, Voivode Gavril IV Suveraneshti was not at his home in the palace. Rather he was at the airport, which had been cleared of any citizens besides him, the guards arrayed with him, and those who worked there; all flights to this airport had either been delayed or rerouted to other nearby airports. Today was an important day, as this was the decided upon day of Jia Li's visit to Cetatsenia. As two nations whose relationship could be accurately described as "mutually neutral", this was a rather important meeting, and Gavril did not want to mess anything up. So he stood alongside his older sister Andreea, the Steward of Cetatsenia, in the airport, ready to head out onto the tarmac to greet the Empress as soon as her plane set down. "You guys get two lunches and a nap in ze afternoon," Gavrila said, almost in awe, "I have to admit, zat sounds really fucking great." Gavril and Andreea just smiled, their cousin's propensity to speak her mind no matter what happened to be on it at the time could have severe diplomatic consequences, but it could also make her give visiting delegates and their country compliments. Despite the fact that her wording of said compliments sometimes left a bit to be desires; by this point her cousins didn't even bother trying to get her to only curse in Cetatsen, because they knew she wouldn't. Then Gavril looked to Xel, "Yes, I can see how zat custom would come about; Demoness was quite a bit warmer zan Cetatsenia when I visited. Our nations are on opposite sides of ze continent." |

Jia Li laughed at Gavrila's reaction while Xel replied to Gavril. "It's gone a bit out of favor since climate control has been popularized, but the break itself remains. Sometimes people just talk or run errands or whatever during that two to three hour span." |

"Well, certain traditions remain even after ze reasoning is no longer applicable," Gavril said, "For example, here in Cetatsenia zere is a species of spider wiz ze pattern of a face on its back. Ancient people believed zat ze face scared off evil spirits, so it was believed zat finding one in your home was good luck. Zese days zey are still a symbol of good luck, and any Cetatsen who finds one in zeir home will leave zem alone unless zey are in ze way." "Oh! I love Noroc Spiders," Gavrila interjected, "I have one above my bed. Well, I did. She may have moved." |

Jia Li stifled a giggle, remembering a game from her youth, though Gavrila's comment was thankfully well-timed. Xel smiled at her in lieu of rolling his eyes and squeezed her hand before responding. "That sounds interesting. It reminds me of a tradition we may have had a long time ago, though we're still not certain what it means. There were masks we discovered hidden in storage that had two faces - one in the front and one in the back - that may have also scared off spirits." He shrugged. "Though it's just as likely they were used to scare off tigers. There were once tigers in Demoness and who knows how long those masks were in storage." |

"Zere were once tigers in Demoness?" Gavril asked, curiously, "What happened to zem? And how long ago was it exactly?" "Pun pariu că ia omorât pe toți," Gavrila muttered, loosely translating to 'I bet they killed them all'. When it came to the extinction of something like tigers, her first thoughts were that it was the result of mankind and not nature. Andreea gave a huff of annoyance, and Gavril simply said, "Taci; let zem answer before you jump to conclusions." Then he turned to the Demonessians and waited for their answer. |

Xel shook his head. "Honestly, I am not certain." "The tiger is the crest of Clan Morikubo and has been from the beginning. They were still extant when the Morikubi were exiled in the third century, but it's difficult to trace them after that. Most people don't write about animals when recording their history, but they were certainly extinct by the ninth century," Jia Li continued. "Then again, the vultael was believed to be extinct and was rediscovered in 19-" She paused. "Sometime last century," she continued with a shrug. "So it's possible they still exist, but we don't really know." |

Gavril gave a slightly smug grin to her cousin, if they went extinct that long ago there was probably more to it than just humans killing them. She just rolled her eyes in response. "Do you really zink zat it is possible ze masks you found were over a millennium old?" Andreea asked, ignoring what was going between her brother and her cousin, "Or do you zink zey were replicas from ze time period when zere were still tigers in Demoness?" "Yeah, zat is a really long time for zem to sit in storage, and to have nobody ever stumble onto zem," Gavrila said, "Or is zis storage just zat nenorocit big?" |

Xel shook his head. "It's more of an archaeological oddity than anything else," he replied. "Pre-Orianic religious relics tend to be mysteries in their use and functions. It's possible they were simply decorations. Oriana ordered much of the 'heretical' artifacts destroyed, but we're discovering many of them were simply well-hidden and certain sites have more objects than others. The Ruadhan Shrine recently rediscovered a vault that had been hidden behind a fresco in a disused portion of its basement. Who knows what else is out there? No one else is going to knock down random walls." "Oh, that was an interesting find," Jia Li interjected excitedly. "There were a lot of old scrolls that were found down there with the rest of the relics. Most of them are unreadable or have disintegrated due to age, but the National Archaeological Society at Heles Numaya thinks it can save and restore what is left. A lot of the documents looked important." |

"Oh, I see," Gavril said rather distastefully at Xel's explanation. Andreea's face mirrored Gavril's own, and Gavrila put her hand on her forehead and shook her head as she muttered something in Cetatsen. Such widespread destruction of knowledge was something that had never really taken place in Cetatsenia, there was never really any need for it. The Voivodes never had any reason to hide the past, and most modern-day Cetatsens considered such actions to be wrong. But Gavril's face lit up at Jia Li's interjection, "Ah, well zat is good at least. I hope zey are eventually able to find out what zey say, it is important to know one's past." "Amnezic repetă greșelile sale," Gavrila said, with a grin now on her face, "Ze amnesiac repeats his mistakes. Pretty much ze Cetatsenian equivalent of 'zose who do not know history are doomed to repeat it'." |

Jia Li shook her head, despite the mirth in Gavrila's words. "Oriana's reaction after seizing power is why I had to reverse the hold that Orthodox Morante had on the nation. So much was lost, especially after reading the Apocrypha, that the religion was barely the same. It's true that Oriana standardized the religion and its rituals, but she also obliterated anything she did not like. It was easy to restore the text because anything removed from the World is supposed to be stored in the Apocrypha in context, but we can't ever really be sure that procedure was properly followed and I don't even know what sort of localized rituals were changed - like those masks we found." |
