If one was to take a place from the nation of Demoness to Cetatsenia, one would most likely see the dichotomy that the nation was rather known for. In the southern parts of the nation one would notice the highlands, heavily forested and almost untouched by man aside from the winding roads and the occasional town. But further north, the terrain would give away to the lowlands of the Centric Basin. This land was flat, and lacked the expansive forests, though there were smaller isolated forests. But the main difference one would notice would be the level of development, it was dominated by a large amount of farmland as the lowland soil was incredibly fertile, but there was also the occasional city, bustling with people. Albraustana-zid was one such city, and it was the primate city of Cetatsenia, the richest and most populous and most important of them all. It was built along both sides of the great Albastru River that ran through much of Cetatsenia, though most of it was on the southern bank of the river. This was because of the simple fact that Albraustana-zid had begun life as three separate forts and settlements built along the river. Albrau and Stana had been built on the Southern bank, and over time had grown together until they were finally united into Albraustana. And while Zid would eventually become part of the greater whole, for a long time it was simply considered a city separated from the capital only by the river. Since it had grown organically over the numerous years, and had once been three separate cities, the streets and roads had a habit of being winding and could be complicated to navigate for those unfamiliar with them who had no map. Though the roads had over time been widened and revamped in order to accommodate cars, and the newest sections of the city on the outskirts actually had a gridded street plan. As it was the middle of the day, the streets were currently filled with cars and buses, and the sidewalks filled with pedestrians, while the newest addition to the city's transportation network, the subway system, ran below the streets. While there was a number of attractions in the city, such as the museums and baths, one of the most prominent is the Palatul Regal, the Royal Palace. The site of the original settlement of Albrau and lying atop a hill, it has been torn down or otherwise destroyed and then subsequently rebuilt several times throughout history. The most recent being the ascension of Ioan I to the throne of Cetatsenia, though it has been renovated and updated since then. The Palace itself is surrounded by a wall that rings the entirety of the hill, with only a single gate leading up to it. The wall is patrolled by a special corps of Cetatsenian soldiers, easily identified by their bright blue ceremonial uniforms and ornate, pointed helmets. After that, a road lead up to the palace proper, an expansive building with a stone exterior that shared more in common with a medieval castle than what one thinks of when they hear the word 'palace'. It was home to a fair number of servants, as well as the guardsmen, and a small number of government officials. Most of those lived out in the city, and worked in their own buildings. It was absolutely huge, and in front of it was an expansive pool of water. Overall, it was an impressive sight that could be seen from a good portion of the city. At the moment, however, Voivode Gavril IV Suveraneshti was not at his home in the palace. Rather he was at the airport, which had been cleared of any citizens besides him, the guards arrayed with him, and those who worked there; all flights to this airport had either been delayed or rerouted to other nearby airports. Today was an important day, as this was the decided upon day of Jia Li's visit to Cetatsenia. As two nations whose relationship could be accurately described as "mutually neutral", this was a rather important meeting, and Gavril did not want to mess anything up. So he stood alongside his older sister Andreea, the Steward of Cetatsenia, in the airport, ready to head out onto the tarmac to greet the Empress as soon as her plane set down. "Ha, well suppose I would adapt," Gavril said smiling, "And I zink it might be interesting to try on some Demonessian formal wear. It is very different from what I usually wear." "Hey Gavril, speaking of weddings, when are you gonna find a nice girl to settle down wiz?" Gavrila interjected rather abruptly, her head turning to stare at her cousin. Gavril blinked in surprise and just stared at Gavrila for a few moments. "You act as zough I am not trying Gavrila," he said, "And you have no room to talk, you are not married eizer." She just shrugged and responded with, "Eh, I am allowed to take my time." Then she turned to Jia Li and Xel, "So, how long have you two been married?" |

"Almost twelve years now," Jia Li said. "We were married toward the end of June." She gave an affectionate smile to her husband, who caressed her hands. "But that is only because we were very fortunate. Most people don't get married that young. I believe my mother didn't get married until she was twenty-seven and my grandmother may have been older than that. I don't recall." |

Gavrila smiled, "Awww, you guys are right, you are lucky. I got married before I was 20, and it ended horribly. Actually, horribly is an understatement; zat is not important though." The she looked over at Gavril, "And I still say you need to actually look for someone." Gavril simply rolled his eyes, then looked to the Imperial couple, "I have a question, if you do not mind me asking. But how did you two meet?" |

Jia Li laughed, and then smiled and exchanged glances with her husband and Makoto as if it were some sort of private joke. "Ano nee... It wouldn't be exaggerating to say that we met at birth. We even shared a crib for a while," she replied. She paused, reflecting sadly on her next words. "My mother died in childbirth, but fortunately, Xel's mother had given birth the week prior, so she nursed my sister and me." Xel took her hand and kissed it before adding. "That didn't last long though. I think it was only a few months, maybe even a year, before I went off to training, but I don't really have any memories of 'meeting' her. She's just always been around." He smiled softly at her, remembering that there had never been anyone but her. In contrast to larger society, the High Guardsmen encouraged sexual relations among its members in order to foster camaraderie and maintain its population. As a High Guard, possibly one of the youngest ever, he would have been quite a catch, especially for marriage, but he had always turned down offers from the others, much to the frustration of his admirers. He hadn't always known he was in love with Jia Li, but she was the center of every High Guardsman's life in a way and that devotion somehow deepened into more, feelings that she reciprocated. It was strange, in opposition of sociological concepts, and in contrast to her relationship with Makoto, who remained only a brother to her. He turned to speak to Gavril. "The High Guardsmen are different from the rest of the Demonessians and from your guards," he explained. "We train from an early age and when we are young we practice standing guard, usually a handful of us with an adult, so most of us have known Jia Li and her family all our lives." |

Gavrila smiled, the same smile that was becoming quite common when Jia Li and Xel's marriage was involved, "I got to say, zat sounds almost like a story; knowing each ozer from birz and having such a lovely marriage. I envy you boz." Gavril listened to Xel's explanation of the High Guardsmen and frowned, not necessarily out a sense of disagreement but in thought. After a moment he responded to him, "Zat is razer interesting I must say. And zere are some Cetatsens who would call such a practice unethical. Ze freedom to choose what we do wiz our lives is quite important to us, and we do not train anyone to be any one zing from birz. Not even ze Voivode, though it would be a waste to train someone to take on ze duties of Voivode only for ze current Voivode to have anozer child." |

Jia Li smiled at her husband in response to Gavrila's comment. She had often felt that way about their relation, like it had been meant to be, ever since he refused to leave her bedside when it was thought she'd die of influenza; it had only made their marriage seem more fortunate. Xel shook his head. "We are not forced to stay as High Guardsmen, though I am a special case because I relinquished my post so late," he replied. "When we turn thirteen, we are given the choice to reject that path and enter school like normal children. Some choose this option, but many don't." He suspected his sister had pondered this choice, as she was quite quiet and hesitant during her thirteenth year, but she had never revealed any such thought to him. He was also aware of a few others who had made the choice. He hadn't followed their career paths after their departure - he'd had more important things to do - but two of them were the dangerous Roukai sisters, one of which had become an Apostate terrorist while the other had thrown away a promising career in NDAISE to become a smuggler. Despite Gavril's condemnation of their early training as unethical, Xel believed allowing such training into the world, without the discipline of structure, to be more unethical. "We are a small, surviving section of the old culture, and our lineage is ancient. It is an honor that cannot be bestowed." |

Gavril nodded, "I understand, and it is good zat zey are offered ze choice to give it up if zey so desire." Then Gavril thought for a moment, "And I zink I understand what you mean when you say zat it is 'an honour zat cannot be bestowed'. It is somezing one is born into, much like Cetatsenia's Four Great Houses: ze descendants of Ioan I and ze Knezi zat followed him. Zey are nowhere near as old, but zey still hold a place of honour in our society, even if ze person is not closely related to any ruling individual." |

Xel nodded. "It could be considered similar. We have interbred with outsiders over the years, so of course our 'lineage' isn't pure, but our founders were supposedly selected by the Goddess herself so the tradition goes back to the founding of Sacred Rock." Despite being an atheist, he still had much pride in how old his caste was. |

Gavril chuckled a bit. "Well, what lineage is totally pure?" he asked, "Interbreeding wiz zose not of ze lineage is bound to happen. And it is a good zing, or else eventually inbreeding would happen eventually. And I zink we can boz agree zat inbreeding is not a good zing." Gavrila looked at her cousin, "I zink zat zat is somezing zat almost everyone agrees on. I cannot zink of any cultures off of ze top of my head zat are cool wiz incest." Then after a moment her face lit up with realization and she added, "Cousins do not count." |

Jia Li laughed. "Cousins do count," she replied, "but they didn't for a good portion of history. I used to tease my cousin about it as well since she's Clan and I thought she'd have to marry one of her relations one day." Xel shook his head, especially since Jia Li was technically his cousin by marriage. "The families have changed over time, but the traditions have not," he continued. "For the most part. We've had to make some adjustments with the times, of course." |
