If one was to take a place from the nation of Demoness to Cetatsenia, one would most likely see the dichotomy that the nation was rather known for. In the southern parts of the nation one would notice the highlands, heavily forested and almost untouched by man aside from the winding roads and the occasional town. But further north, the terrain would give away to the lowlands of the Centric Basin. This land was flat, and lacked the expansive forests, though there were smaller isolated forests. But the main difference one would notice would be the level of development, it was dominated by a large amount of farmland as the lowland soil was incredibly fertile, but there was also the occasional city, bustling with people. Albraustana-zid was one such city, and it was the primate city of Cetatsenia, the richest and most populous and most important of them all. It was built along both sides of the great Albastru River that ran through much of Cetatsenia, though most of it was on the southern bank of the river. This was because of the simple fact that Albraustana-zid had begun life as three separate forts and settlements built along the river. Albrau and Stana had been built on the Southern bank, and over time had grown together until they were finally united into Albraustana. And while Zid would eventually become part of the greater whole, for a long time it was simply considered a city separated from the capital only by the river. Since it had grown organically over the numerous years, and had once been three separate cities, the streets and roads had a habit of being winding and could be complicated to navigate for those unfamiliar with them who had no map. Though the roads had over time been widened and revamped in order to accommodate cars, and the newest sections of the city on the outskirts actually had a gridded street plan. As it was the middle of the day, the streets were currently filled with cars and buses, and the sidewalks filled with pedestrians, while the newest addition to the city's transportation network, the subway system, ran below the streets. While there was a number of attractions in the city, such as the museums and baths, one of the most prominent is the Palatul Regal, the Royal Palace. The site of the original settlement of Albrau and lying atop a hill, it has been torn down or otherwise destroyed and then subsequently rebuilt several times throughout history. The most recent being the ascension of Ioan I to the throne of Cetatsenia, though it has been renovated and updated since then. The Palace itself is surrounded by a wall that rings the entirety of the hill, with only a single gate leading up to it. The wall is patrolled by a special corps of Cetatsenian soldiers, easily identified by their bright blue ceremonial uniforms and ornate, pointed helmets. After that, a road lead up to the palace proper, an expansive building with a stone exterior that shared more in common with a medieval castle than what one thinks of when they hear the word 'palace'. It was home to a fair number of servants, as well as the guardsmen, and a small number of government officials. Most of those lived out in the city, and worked in their own buildings. It was absolutely huge, and in front of it was an expansive pool of water. Overall, it was an impressive sight that could be seen from a good portion of the city. At the moment, however, Voivode Gavril IV Suveraneshti was not at his home in the palace. Rather he was at the airport, which had been cleared of any citizens besides him, the guards arrayed with him, and those who worked there; all flights to this airport had either been delayed or rerouted to other nearby airports. Today was an important day, as this was the decided upon day of Jia Li's visit to Cetatsenia. As two nations whose relationship could be accurately described as "mutually neutral", this was a rather important meeting, and Gavril did not want to mess anything up. So he stood alongside his older sister Andreea, the Steward of Cetatsenia, in the airport, ready to head out onto the tarmac to greet the Empress as soon as her plane set down. "Well, ze same is true for Cetatsenia," Gavril said, "Even zough it is not usually acceptable to marry your first cousin by blood, it is still legal here in Cetatsenia. Zere is not any particular stigma associated wiz it zough, probably because it is not all zat common." "Hey, maybe we could get married," Gavrila said, smiling as she reached over to elbow Gavril in the ribs playfully. Gavril just gave his cousin a wide-eyed look and said, "Gavrila, do not joke about zings like zat." She gave Gavril a seductive look that was so over exaggerated that it was almost comical, and to further dispel any notions that she was serious she couldn't stop herself from breaking into laughter. hen she playfully punched Gavril, "Oh, lighten up. It was a joke." Gavril just sighed. |

Jia Li noted Gavril's practically horrified look and asked, "Is marrying your cousin really that bad?" |

"Er, no. Not really," Gavril said, "But as I said, it is generally frowned upon even if zere is no particular stigma attached to married cousins. And in ze modern day, it is considered incestuous by most. Plus Gavrila is like a sister to me." "Awww, zat is sweet," Gavrila said in a mildly teasing tone. |

Jia Li laughed. "That I understand," she replied. "I don't think I could marry any of my cousins, especially the ones who were raised with me." "Yet you had a crush on Ned," Xel added quietly, just loud enough that he was overheard. She shoved him playfully. "He doesn't count. He was my first crush," she whispered back. Though his comment was teasing, and Ned Davion had been their close friend for many years, she suspected Xel still harbored jealous thoughts about him. |

"Ned..." Gavril stopped and thought for a moment, "Do you mean Ned Davion?" He'd never been to Fenwick, or met any of the ruling family, but he was still at least passingly familiar with them; he tried to at least now who the ruling families of Lavinaria's monarchies were. And in addition he was building relations with Demoness, and the nations of Fenwick and Demoness were quite close. |

"Yes. He's practically a brother to me, well, both he and his brother," Jia Li answered. "I don't know if you are aware of the terms of our agreement, but we switch children of the ruling families for a few years so that they can better understand the other culture. Only there was an incident and my sister came back with Erryn. They all spent the three years with us in the Palace." Though the tradition had begun as a hostage exchange between new, still-wary allies, it had grown into an opportunity for the ruling families to become close, but the "incident" had ironically refocused attention on hostages. The Shield of Aedmon, a supremely isolationist faction, was unsatisfied with Fenwick's longstanding alliance with Demoness and sought to break that bond by kidnapping the two princes and Hikari. Details of the incident were not released, but the plan did not progress past stage one wherein a small group infiltrated the Fenwicki palace; they were neutralized before any harm came to the children, aged between 13 and 17, and as an apology, all three were sent back to Demoness while the Shield of Aedmon was confronted, much like the current Apostate threat in Demoness. |

Gavril nodded to show his interest. "Yes, I do believe I remember hearing somezing about somezing like zat at some point. And I am curious, how exactly was it zat Demoness and Fenwick came to be so close?" he asked, "Not many nations can claim to be as close as you two seem to be. Especially Cetatsenia, who has neighboured enemies for much of its history." |

"Well, one could say that it was a special set of circumstances," Jia Li replied. "Demoness was isolated through much of its history due to its geography, so it did not always make the best foreign policy decisions. Our first encounters with Fenwick's ancestors, the Aedmoni Empire, were violent and we established a peace based simply on the fact that Aedmon could fight us to a standstill, which is a lot more than any other places we'd tried to colonize could do. "While it was an unsteady peace, we did come to understand the Aedmoni and the colonists actually tried to integrate into their society, which probably made it much easier for them when the 1168 Fire happened. The fire basically threw the colonies into chaos and cut all communications with home. Varsenon took the opportunity to capture some territory and eventually all the colonies were destroyed, conquered, or assimilated. When Sacred Rock was able to return its attentions to the colonies, the empress' concern was with protecting her people, so she negotiated the Accord of Orendh with the Aedmoni Empire." She shrugged. "It started out as a hostage situation - essentially all the colonists - and over the years my ancestors realized that if we were to 'protect' our blood, we'd have to protect Fenwick as well. Fenwick recognized the value of our friendship and we grew closer as the centuries passed. That's a gross simplification, of course." |

"It may be a simplification, but zat is one hell of a way to start a friendship," Gavrila said with a laugh, "Back zen ze zought of making nice wiz an enemy would have been completely alien." "Granted times have changed," Gavril added, "For example, we are on razer friendly terms wiz Intermaris now, despite ze events of ze Second Great war." Aurel bristled slightly at this, but remained silent. |

"Mmm... A global economy has ways of making enemies friends," Jia Li replied, recalling her education. "But I am surprised at that, honestly. How did you manage it?" |
