If one was to take a place from the nation of Demoness to Cetatsenia, one would most likely see the dichotomy that the nation was rather known for. In the southern parts of the nation one would notice the highlands, heavily forested and almost untouched by man aside from the winding roads and the occasional town. But further north, the terrain would give away to the lowlands of the Centric Basin. This land was flat, and lacked the expansive forests, though there were smaller isolated forests. But the main difference one would notice would be the level of development, it was dominated by a large amount of farmland as the lowland soil was incredibly fertile, but there was also the occasional city, bustling with people.

Albraustana-zid was one such city, and it was the primate city of Cetatsenia, the richest and most populous and most important of them all. It was built along both sides of the great Albastru River that ran through much of Cetatsenia, though most of it was on the southern bank of the river. This was because of the simple fact that Albraustana-zid had begun life as three separate forts and settlements built along the river. Albrau and Stana had been built on the Southern bank, and over time had grown together until they were finally united into Albraustana. And while Zid would eventually become part of the greater whole, for a long time it was simply considered a city separated from the capital only by the river.

Since it had grown organically over the numerous years, and had once been three separate cities, the streets and roads had a habit of being winding and could be complicated to navigate for those unfamiliar with them who had no map. Though the roads had over time been widened and revamped in order to accommodate cars, and the newest sections of the city on the outskirts actually had a gridded street plan. As it was the middle of the day, the streets were currently filled with cars and buses, and the sidewalks filled with pedestrians, while the newest addition to the city's transportation network, the subway system, ran below the streets.

While there was a number of attractions in the city, such as the museums and baths, one of the most prominent is the Palatul Regal, the Royal Palace. The site of the original settlement of Albrau and lying atop a hill, it has been torn down or otherwise destroyed and then subsequently rebuilt several times throughout history. The most recent being the ascension of Ioan I to the throne of Cetatsenia, though it has been renovated and updated since then.

The Palace itself is surrounded by a wall that rings the entirety of the hill, with only a single gate leading up to it. The wall is patrolled by a special corps of Cetatsenian soldiers, easily identified by their bright blue ceremonial uniforms and ornate, pointed helmets. After that, a road lead up to the palace proper, an expansive building with a stone exterior that shared more in common with a medieval castle than what one thinks of when they hear the word 'palace'. It was home to a fair number of servants, as well as the guardsmen, and a small number of government officials. Most of those lived out in the city, and worked in their own buildings. It was absolutely huge, and in front of it was an expansive pool of water. Overall, it was an impressive sight that could be seen from a good portion of the city.

At the moment, however, Voivode Gavril IV Suveraneshti was not at his home in the palace. Rather he was at the airport, which had been cleared of any citizens besides him, the guards arrayed with him, and those who worked there; all flights to this airport had either been delayed or rerouted to other nearby airports. Today was an important day, as this was the decided upon day of Jia Li's visit to Cetatsenia. As two nations whose relationship could be accurately described as "mutually neutral", this was a rather important meeting, and Gavril did not want to mess anything up. So he stood alongside his older sister Andreea, the Steward of Cetatsenia, in the airport, ready to head out onto the tarmac to greet the Empress as soon as her plane set down.

"Well to be honest, it was ze fact zat ze Intermaris of today is not ze Intermaris of ze Second Great War," Gavril said shrugging, "Zough it was not easy at first, what wiz many Cetatsens not trusting ze Intermarines. But over time most grew to, if not trust zem, at least not suspect zem of working against us. And it has been several decades since ze war ended."

"Not to mention Intermaris is our largest neighbour," Andreea added, "Playing nice was ze best course of action for us, even if zere were some zat disapproved."

Jia Li nodded. "In the absence of other allies in the area, it does make sense," she conceded. "But I imagine the transition could not have been easy. We still have trust issues with PA nations, even ones that were technically our allies." By that, she meant the exiled Intermarine nobles and expats who settled in Sacred Rock and the larger cities in the Interwar period and soon after the second war began. While Demoness wished to restore the Intermarine monarchy, especially after investing so much money into them, but that didn't mean it trusted foreigners. The years had softened the paranoia, but not enough that Michal Teodor, Empress Lexisa's Intermarine lover, could stay in the palace after her death.

"It was not easy, especially after ze monarchy was deposed by a republic. Zat had quite a bit of ze nobility up in arms and preparing for anozer invasion," Gavril said, "Luckily nozing came out of it and zere was not any large-scale violence. Zough relations were very much strained for quite a while. But ze transition was far easier once ze generation who did not grow up seeing Intermarines as ze enemy came of age."

"We are not one to hold ze child accountable for ze sins of ze parent, as I believe ze phrase goes," Andreea added.

While this entire conversation was going on, Gavrila stole a glance at Aurel. He didn't seem to be particularly bothered by the current conversation, though Gavrila noted that he was looking around the room. He was probably focusing his attention elsewhere to stop from thinking about the current topic. Even today Aurel had a dislike, almost a hatred in fact, for Intermarines because of what they did during the Second Great War. Both to Cetatsenia as a whole and to him personally.

"That is rather fortunate, as it is not the case in Demoness," Jia Li replied. "We spoke of bloodlines before and to some extent personality is believed to be dictated by ones forebearers. Truthfully, that may have had more to do with wergild than actual belief, but it is belief now." Her bloodline was questioned, though never within earshot, and she was more familiar with accusations against her cousin, Yuri, whose mother and siblings seemed to be particularly afflicted by personality disorders. Since the children were the offspring of two fairly antagonistic families, accusations flew about who was to blame.

"To be honest I find zat quite sad," Gavril said, "A innocent child should not be held accountable in any way for ze actions of zeir parents. History has shown zat a lineage can contain people boz kind and gentle and vile and treacherous. You saw ze proof of zat when we toured ze Great Hall and my predecessors, all of which are a part of my House."

Gavrila shuddered, "Ugh, I would hate to zink of Traian's influence being passed down zrough ze generations."

Jia Li shook her head. "Nevertheless, it is still quite prevalent, even if it has no scientific basis. It would be amusing to hear people debate it if they honestly didn't know better, but most of them are highly educated."

At Jia Li's remark Gavrila snickered. "Oh man, zere is nozing funnier zan watching people debate somezing zey do not know anyzing about," she said, "Unless zey are part of ze government, zen it is just sad and I pity zat nation for having to go zrough zat kind of bullshit."

Gavril simply nodded his head in agreement with his cousin. Though he was thinking about the latter part of Jia Li's statement. He found it to be rather odd how you could have Demonessians who were, without a doubt, highly educated and intelligent people, and yet still believed in things such as that, things without any realistic basis, just because it was ingrained in their culture.

"They base it on genetics or eugenics or whatever is the most popular theory to subvert," Jia Li continued. "I honestly don't know if they truly believe it or they pretend to in order to debase one another. I have a matriarch and a few heiresses on my council and I have never heard them express it the belief, but I'm not sure they're all shrewd enough not to express that opinion in front of me anyway." She shook her head. "But I have heard enough from my cousin to know the Clans still fling insults at one another."

Gavril shook his head, "Dealing wiz ze Clans must give you such a headache. Ze Great houses here all get along. Any vendettas are eizer personal or political, and have nozing to do wiz House affiliation. Not to mention zere are only four of zem."

"It is true, I mean look at me and Gavril," Gavrila chimed in, "From two separate Houses but close as siblings!"

Jia Li shook her head. "The Clans are more than just medieval noble houses. They are, ano..." She hesitated, trying to figure out how to explain the Clans precisely. Even though anthropologists simply connected the Clans to strong social groups, the Demonessians' viewpoint on them was closer to that of race and, therefore, was vulnerable to stereotypes. There were a total of eleven Clans, their Houses, and several derivatives and nearly every native Demonessian was descended from them in on manner or another. Many were too far removed from the inner family to be affected by their politics and feuds, but that didn't mean that occasional references to their probable ancestry were not made.

She sighed. "They are a headache to deal with, but their vendettas are thankfully with one another, though they occasionally get out of hand."
