If one was to take a place from the nation of Demoness to Cetatsenia, one would most likely see the dichotomy that the nation was rather known for. In the southern parts of the nation one would notice the highlands, heavily forested and almost untouched by man aside from the winding roads and the occasional town. But further north, the terrain would give away to the lowlands of the Centric Basin. This land was flat, and lacked the expansive forests, though there were smaller isolated forests. But the main difference one would notice would be the level of development, it was dominated by a large amount of farmland as the lowland soil was incredibly fertile, but there was also the occasional city, bustling with people. Albraustana-zid was one such city, and it was the primate city of Cetatsenia, the richest and most populous and most important of them all. It was built along both sides of the great Albastru River that ran through much of Cetatsenia, though most of it was on the southern bank of the river. This was because of the simple fact that Albraustana-zid had begun life as three separate forts and settlements built along the river. Albrau and Stana had been built on the Southern bank, and over time had grown together until they were finally united into Albraustana. And while Zid would eventually become part of the greater whole, for a long time it was simply considered a city separated from the capital only by the river. Since it had grown organically over the numerous years, and had once been three separate cities, the streets and roads had a habit of being winding and could be complicated to navigate for those unfamiliar with them who had no map. Though the roads had over time been widened and revamped in order to accommodate cars, and the newest sections of the city on the outskirts actually had a gridded street plan. As it was the middle of the day, the streets were currently filled with cars and buses, and the sidewalks filled with pedestrians, while the newest addition to the city's transportation network, the subway system, ran below the streets. While there was a number of attractions in the city, such as the museums and baths, one of the most prominent is the Palatul Regal, the Royal Palace. The site of the original settlement of Albrau and lying atop a hill, it has been torn down or otherwise destroyed and then subsequently rebuilt several times throughout history. The most recent being the ascension of Ioan I to the throne of Cetatsenia, though it has been renovated and updated since then. The Palace itself is surrounded by a wall that rings the entirety of the hill, with only a single gate leading up to it. The wall is patrolled by a special corps of Cetatsenian soldiers, easily identified by their bright blue ceremonial uniforms and ornate, pointed helmets. After that, a road lead up to the palace proper, an expansive building with a stone exterior that shared more in common with a medieval castle than what one thinks of when they hear the word 'palace'. It was home to a fair number of servants, as well as the guardsmen, and a small number of government officials. Most of those lived out in the city, and worked in their own buildings. It was absolutely huge, and in front of it was an expansive pool of water. Overall, it was an impressive sight that could be seen from a good portion of the city. At the moment, however, Voivode Gavril IV Suveraneshti was not at his home in the palace. Rather he was at the airport, which had been cleared of any citizens besides him, the guards arrayed with him, and those who worked there; all flights to this airport had either been delayed or rerouted to other nearby airports. Today was an important day, as this was the decided upon day of Jia Li's visit to Cetatsenia. As two nations whose relationship could be accurately described as "mutually neutral", this was a rather important meeting, and Gavril did not want to mess anything up. So he stood alongside his older sister Andreea, the Steward of Cetatsenia, in the airport, ready to head out onto the tarmac to greet the Empress as soon as her plane set down. "Well it was not easy, I will say zat much. Zere was a rudimentary water system already in place, and zat was expanded and maintained over ze centuries. I know zat zere were sections of ze castle zat had to be removed to make room for ze wiring and pipes, but zey were rebuilt to look exactly ze same as zey were," Gavril said after some deliberation, "Truzfully I am not entirely sure of ze specifics, it has been renovated several times over ze centuries. And ze wiring and running water and all zat was put in before I was even born; granted, it has been updated since zen." "It was far easier for my palace," Gavrila chimed, "Mine was built in ze 1800s, so it was not a solid stone castle." Edited by Cetatsenia, Dec 23 2013, 03:25 AM.

"Wood rots, so I imagine it would actually be more difficult to maintain," Jia Li said. "The estate I went to was wood and I found it far more impressive. There's only so much stuff you can do with stone before you have to worry about the weight." She shook her head. "Most of the wood structures we have are either in the country or are purposely destroyed and rebuilt every so many years." |

"Eh, stone stuff looks more imposing and impressive if you ask me," Gavrila said, shrugging, "Pretty much any government building and palace in Cetatsenia will be stone, at least on ze outside." "Yes, and stone lasts longer," Gavril added, "Demolishing and rebuilding structures instead of maintaining zem sounds like it would be a razer costly endeavour." |

Jia Li shook her head. "It's restricted to the Artists, who do it with their guild buildings every few decades. I'm not sure how or why the tradition started, but it's quite interesting. The demolition is quite an event. They used to set it on fire, but obviously that's a horrible hazard these days, so these days they have a symbolic fire, among other new traditions." |

"Oh, I see. Well zen, zat is different. And I zink zat would be an interesting zing to see," Gavril said. "Yeah, demolitions are always fun to watch," Gavrila said with a glint in her eyes, "It is a pity zey do not burn zem down anymore, because zat sounds like it would be a lot of fun to watch. But I understand why zey do not." |

"I'll let you know the next time I become aware of such an event. It's really interesting watching them be constructed too. The very traditional structures don't use nails or glue; they're cut to fit together exactly. Of course, they're generally only two to three stories, so that's much easier than it could be." |

"Still, a two or zree story structure built wizout nails or glue is impressive," Gavril said, "And zank you, it would be quite a sight to see." "Yeah, just do not expect me to ever want to go inside one of zem," Gavrila said. She wasn't about to trust a building that was built by cutting materials to fit together. It just didn't sound structurally safe to her; she'd prefer a solid floor any day. |

Jia Li laughed. "They're quite safe. How do you think people used to build houses? And there are some stone structures that use only fitted stone, even in my country." She gestured toward the library. "You could probably find quite a few books on the method." |

"I do not doubt zat I could. And I am sure ze buildings are perfectly safe," Gavrila said, "Still not going to ever go into one if I can help it." Gavril laughed and even Andreea smiled a little bit at their cousin's reaction. "You mentioned zat aside from ze now-symbolic fire, zere were ozer new traditions associated wiz ze event," Andreea said, "May I ask what zey are?" "Yes, I am curious as well," Gavril said, nodding his head, "It is a fairly interesting custom; zere are not any like it in Cetatsenia." |

"Hmm..." Jia Li paused as she recalled the last event she'd attended. While there were many guild houses in the city, their structures stood for several decades and her age and health had only allowed her to attend one event, which was several years ago. "Fire represents Leilani, who is one of the few aspects who are actually allowed the title 'goddess'. She is the patron of transience, which is why fire was used in the original ceremonies," Xel replied as she collected her thoughts. "I haven't had the pleasure of witnessing one of the events myself, but I believe they still light a fire to honor her." "Yes," Jia Li interjected, her memory jogged. "They hang a garland of fresh flowers around the entrance and light it on fire. They wore red dresses and performed a dance I haven't seen since. There was a lot of singing and laughing and acrobatics. I remember the women formed a pyramid so others could climb up onto the roof - Artists are all female. It was dark - I think just after sunset - and there were three women on the roof. I couldn't hear them at the time, but I remember they pulled something off the roof - Maybe a crossbeam? - and threw it down to a waiting group of other Artists. That was quickly cut and burned as well. I think they took apart the rest of the roof, piece by piece, but I don't remember if the rest of the building was taken down that night or not. I was very young when this happened, maybe seven or eight." |
