If one was to take a place from the nation of Demoness to Cetatsenia, one would most likely see the dichotomy that the nation was rather known for. In the southern parts of the nation one would notice the highlands, heavily forested and almost untouched by man aside from the winding roads and the occasional town. But further north, the terrain would give away to the lowlands of the Centric Basin. This land was flat, and lacked the expansive forests, though there were smaller isolated forests. But the main difference one would notice would be the level of development, it was dominated by a large amount of farmland as the lowland soil was incredibly fertile, but there was also the occasional city, bustling with people.

Albraustana-zid was one such city, and it was the primate city of Cetatsenia, the richest and most populous and most important of them all. It was built along both sides of the great Albastru River that ran through much of Cetatsenia, though most of it was on the southern bank of the river. This was because of the simple fact that Albraustana-zid had begun life as three separate forts and settlements built along the river. Albrau and Stana had been built on the Southern bank, and over time had grown together until they were finally united into Albraustana. And while Zid would eventually become part of the greater whole, for a long time it was simply considered a city separated from the capital only by the river.

Since it had grown organically over the numerous years, and had once been three separate cities, the streets and roads had a habit of being winding and could be complicated to navigate for those unfamiliar with them who had no map. Though the roads had over time been widened and revamped in order to accommodate cars, and the newest sections of the city on the outskirts actually had a gridded street plan. As it was the middle of the day, the streets were currently filled with cars and buses, and the sidewalks filled with pedestrians, while the newest addition to the city's transportation network, the subway system, ran below the streets.

While there was a number of attractions in the city, such as the museums and baths, one of the most prominent is the Palatul Regal, the Royal Palace. The site of the original settlement of Albrau and lying atop a hill, it has been torn down or otherwise destroyed and then subsequently rebuilt several times throughout history. The most recent being the ascension of Ioan I to the throne of Cetatsenia, though it has been renovated and updated since then.

The Palace itself is surrounded by a wall that rings the entirety of the hill, with only a single gate leading up to it. The wall is patrolled by a special corps of Cetatsenian soldiers, easily identified by their bright blue ceremonial uniforms and ornate, pointed helmets. After that, a road lead up to the palace proper, an expansive building with a stone exterior that shared more in common with a medieval castle than what one thinks of when they hear the word 'palace'. It was home to a fair number of servants, as well as the guardsmen, and a small number of government officials. Most of those lived out in the city, and worked in their own buildings. It was absolutely huge, and in front of it was an expansive pool of water. Overall, it was an impressive sight that could be seen from a good portion of the city.

At the moment, however, Voivode Gavril IV Suveraneshti was not at his home in the palace. Rather he was at the airport, which had been cleared of any citizens besides him, the guards arrayed with him, and those who worked there; all flights to this airport had either been delayed or rerouted to other nearby airports. Today was an important day, as this was the decided upon day of Jia Li's visit to Cetatsenia. As two nations whose relationship could be accurately described as "mutually neutral", this was a rather important meeting, and Gavril did not want to mess anything up. So he stood alongside his older sister Andreea, the Steward of Cetatsenia, in the airport, ready to head out onto the tarmac to greet the Empress as soon as her plane set down.

"Because he understands zat zings change, and he is a kind man who believes people have ze right to be ze way zey are so long as it does not harm ozers," Gavril said.

"Knez Radu is probably one of ze sweetest and kindest people I have ever met," Andreea added.

------

"To be honest, nozing really concrete. I am ze Knezinja so it is not like I really on public opinion to keep my power," Gavrila said, "But I still do not want to deal wiz ze people who would dislike me just because I was bi. And I really do not want to deal wiz ze damn media."

Xel frowned. "That is actually surprisingly liberal, even for people of our generation," he replied with a hint of surprise. "How old is he?"

---

Jia Li nodded. "I can understand that. In Demoness, I am quite lucky because the press is restricted as to what it can say about me, but it is allowed to report whatever it wants on anyone else. They seem to focus on the Clans and I know it's caused my cousin distress more than once." She shook her head.

"I zink he is somewhere in his sixties or seventies," Gavril said, "He is pretty old, but not as old as Aurel."

While the group had been having their conversation, Behemoth had managed to jump down off the table without anyone really paying any attention to it. And now that he was back on the ground and free to roam where he willed, he slowly made his way towards the new smell in the room. He crept up to Xel's chair, and then "stood up" in a sense before Gavril or Andreea could react, laying his forelegs on Xel's leg for support as he sniffed at the new person.

------

"Technically I could just tell ze press not to post anyzing about it should it get out; I do have absolute auzority after all," Gavrila said, "But zat would not stop it from getting out anyway. Plus we try not to infringe on ze rights of ze press too much zese days."

"Actually, you said earlier zat you all consider bisexuality to be ze sort of basic sexuality, right?" she said curiously, "So, are bisexual or just straight?"

Xel was not a stranger to an animal's curiosity - after all, chitaels roamed freely - but this was the first time something of Behemoth's size had investigated him. Unlike Jia Li, he didn't find the animal cute or or endearing, yet it wasn't necessarily because he was a rat; he was simply used to classifying newcomers by their use, even animals. While his expression was as difficult to read as always, he didn't appear to show a particular dislike of Behemoth, nor a like; it was definitely indifference.

He returned his attention to Gavrila and Andreea. "Did Knez Radu fight in the war as well?" he asked suddenly.

---

Jia Li seemed to be taken by surprise by the question. "Bisexual, I suppose," she said, after giving the question some thought. "I've never really thought about it. I mean, I had a crush on Ned when he first arrived, but I never really considered dating anyone when I was growing up. Regardless of my orientation, I have to produce an heir and that limits my marriage choices to men only." She shrugged. "I looked at women and I've found some attractive, but I'll be honest with you - I've only ever really considered Xel as a sexual entity. I can objectively say that even some of my male friends are attractive, but I feel nothing." She smirked. "Or maybe I've been married so long-"

Marcus' voice cut in, dryly stating a fact. "Your Divinity, if I may interject, you've been 'married' to Nedia-shiro for as long as I remember."

She glanced back at him and gave him a playful glare. "You need to stop rewriting history with Kanzaka-shiro," she scolded him with a slight smirk.

Gavril watched Xel, ready to move Behemoth should Xel show any signs of not wanting the animal around. However, he didn't seem to particularly care, and so Gavril figured it best to just leave the large rat be. After all, he wasn't hurting the man.

"Knez Radu? In the Second Great War?" Gavril said, "Oh, no. If he was alive during it he was very young. Aurel himself was just a teenager when ze Intermarines invaded from what I know."

------

At the Empress's answer, Gavrila nodded in understanding. "I got you. I was not ze heir for most of my life, so I was able to date and whatnot. Zough I kept ze few girlfriends I had from my parents," she said, "And now zat I am Knezinja, I need to have an heir. Zat is why I have only talked about finding a man to marry; if I had an heir and I found a woman I loved, I would marry zem and I would not give a damn about what people zought."

Gavrila took another sip of her vodka before finishing. "And it seems to me like you are just a Xel-sexual," she said laughing, "Which I suppose is a good zing, really."

Xel nodded, as if that explained it. The ones who returned from the war reproduced heavily, but some of their children had grown up to hold fairly liberal views for whatever reason.

---

Jia Li shook her head. "They," she said, pointedly gesturing toward Marcus, "like to simplify things more than they are. I was close with Xel growing up, but it was natural since his mother nursed me and we were the same age. He's literally only seven days older than me. I don't really recall 'liking' him until I was in my teens and by then I knew better than to get my hopes up. At the time, I wouldn't have been able to marry him." She took a sip of wine and looked into the distance. "Though if not for the rules, I probably would have openly started dating him then."

Gavril was about to respond when Behemoth suddenly decided that he didn't want to stand there and sniff Xel anymore. Instead, the rat got down off of his leg, looked up at Xel, and proceeded to jump up onto his lap.

"Behemoz!" Gavril said. He attempted to get up, but felt the weight of the other fat that was still on his lap.

However, Andreea was already moving towards. "I am very sorry," she said, reaching for the rat.

------

Gavrila smiled at the Empress's story, taking a sip of vodka and then responding. "Zat almost sounds like somezing out of a book," she said, then her face fell and she looked down into her bottle, "I envy you and Xel, you know. My husband was a complete asshole, and I had to give up my relationship wiz a man I was actually in love wiz in order to marry him."

Then she angrily muttered under her breath, "Urăsc părinții mei."

Xel reached underneath Behemoth, cradling him much like a dog, and handed him to Andreea. "It's alright," he replied. "Though I can't say that much happens in Demoness, at least not in my experience. The closest we have to a lap animal is a qimuku and I can't say they're as well-behaved as your rats. They're not really house pets."

---

Jia Li frowned. "If you don't mind me asking, why don't you try to rekindle your relationship with him?"

Behemoth looked at Xel curiously as the man picked him up, trying to move towards him and sniffing curiously. But Andreea quickly took him in her arms, cradling him as she returned to her seat. When she did, she set Behemoth down on her lap. However, the rat almost immediately jumped up her chest and onto her shoulder, nestling down behind her neck.

"What exactly is a qimuku?" Gavril asked, "And what do mean zey are 'not really' house pets?"

------

Gavril took another swig of her vodka and was silent for a short while, just staring into the water. "I do not even know where he is, or what he is doing wiz his life," Gavrila said, "I mean, I could easily find out, but... But it has been years and I zink I am scared to know zat he has moved on. Plus it has been years, we have probably boz changed since zen."

Xel frowned. "It's a small mammal of some kind. I honestly couldn't tell you what it's classified as, but it's a desert dweller and I suppose you could compare it to a hedgehog with scales instead of quills. The Morikubi kept them in a relationship that was more symbiotic than domesticated. Qimukus apparently are very good at finding water sources and are quite intelligent." He shook his head. "I've just heard they're not good pets, despite being affectionate." He shrugged. "Maybe they are like cats. In any case, once the Morikubi left their exile in the desert, they didn't keep them as closely as they had previously and they have a small following of keepers."

---

Jia Li frowned sympathetically. "I can't give good advice on that, but maybe it's good to at least know and give yourself some closure, even if he did move on. That way at least you'd know." Her frown deepened and she glanced at Marcus before leaning in closer. She whispered, "I actually tracked my sister's boyfriend for many years, just in case she wanted to know, but that kinda backfired." Her expression turned sad; Hikari had been dating Kensuke for a few years before her exile and she'd mistakenly believed he'd moved on. He quit the priesthood and entered a successful career as a political aide. Unfortunately, he maintained his contacts with Hikari's supporters and was revealed to be an Apostate agent; he was executed almost three years ago and she didn't know if Hikari had known. "Regardless, I think she would have wanted to know."
