If one was to take a place from the nation of Demoness to Cetatsenia, one would most likely see the dichotomy that the nation was rather known for. In the southern parts of the nation one would notice the highlands, heavily forested and almost untouched by man aside from the winding roads and the occasional town. But further north, the terrain would give away to the lowlands of the Centric Basin. This land was flat, and lacked the expansive forests, though there were smaller isolated forests. But the main difference one would notice would be the level of development, it was dominated by a large amount of farmland as the lowland soil was incredibly fertile, but there was also the occasional city, bustling with people.

Albraustana-zid was one such city, and it was the primate city of Cetatsenia, the richest and most populous and most important of them all. It was built along both sides of the great Albastru River that ran through much of Cetatsenia, though most of it was on the southern bank of the river. This was because of the simple fact that Albraustana-zid had begun life as three separate forts and settlements built along the river. Albrau and Stana had been built on the Southern bank, and over time had grown together until they were finally united into Albraustana. And while Zid would eventually become part of the greater whole, for a long time it was simply considered a city separated from the capital only by the river.

Since it had grown organically over the numerous years, and had once been three separate cities, the streets and roads had a habit of being winding and could be complicated to navigate for those unfamiliar with them who had no map. Though the roads had over time been widened and revamped in order to accommodate cars, and the newest sections of the city on the outskirts actually had a gridded street plan. As it was the middle of the day, the streets were currently filled with cars and buses, and the sidewalks filled with pedestrians, while the newest addition to the city's transportation network, the subway system, ran below the streets.

While there was a number of attractions in the city, such as the museums and baths, one of the most prominent is the Palatul Regal, the Royal Palace. The site of the original settlement of Albrau and lying atop a hill, it has been torn down or otherwise destroyed and then subsequently rebuilt several times throughout history. The most recent being the ascension of Ioan I to the throne of Cetatsenia, though it has been renovated and updated since then.

The Palace itself is surrounded by a wall that rings the entirety of the hill, with only a single gate leading up to it. The wall is patrolled by a special corps of Cetatsenian soldiers, easily identified by their bright blue ceremonial uniforms and ornate, pointed helmets. After that, a road lead up to the palace proper, an expansive building with a stone exterior that shared more in common with a medieval castle than what one thinks of when they hear the word 'palace'. It was home to a fair number of servants, as well as the guardsmen, and a small number of government officials. Most of those lived out in the city, and worked in their own buildings. It was absolutely huge, and in front of it was an expansive pool of water. Overall, it was an impressive sight that could be seen from a good portion of the city.

At the moment, however, Voivode Gavril IV Suveraneshti was not at his home in the palace. Rather he was at the airport, which had been cleared of any citizens besides him, the guards arrayed with him, and those who worked there; all flights to this airport had either been delayed or rerouted to other nearby airports. Today was an important day, as this was the decided upon day of Jia Li's visit to Cetatsenia. As two nations whose relationship could be accurately described as "mutually neutral", this was a rather important meeting, and Gavril did not want to mess anything up. So he stood alongside his older sister Andreea, the Steward of Cetatsenia, in the airport, ready to head out onto the tarmac to greet the Empress as soon as her plane set down.

"Huh, I suppose zat makes sense. And ze reason zey kept zem around sounds similar to ze way great rats became domesticated," Gavril said, "Based on mutual need."

"You see, ze great rats would break into food stores and eat ze food, but zey were quite protective of what zey considered 'zeir' food," Andreea explained, "So zey would kill ozer pestss zat came and tried to eat ze food. Humans ended up keeping zem around and feeding zem in return for them killing pests. Kind of like housecats, I believe."

"I wonder why qimukus are not considered as good pets," Gavril then wondered aloud.

------

Gavrila looked at the Empress and considered what she'd said. Deep down she was scared that he'd moved on without her, but she wasn't sure why she felt like that. After all, that was what she expected. She continued to stare at the water as she thought, then looked back up at the Empress.

"Yeah, I suppose you are right; it probably is for ze best," she said, "It would stop me from wondering what happened to him sometimes. Zough I will probably always wonder what would have happened if I had not gotten married to someone else."

Xel shrugged. "I don't know, but that doesn't stop pet stores from selling them and, unfortunately, many of them end up surrendered. Most of it is due to housing rules since pets aren't allowed in most places, but it might be for other reasons as well. I'd have to ask Jia Li if she knows. She likes pets."

---

Jia Li shook her head. "It is not good to dwell on 'what ifs'," she replied in a normal voice. "I have done that every day I hear a report about Apostate activity, wondering if my decisions could have prevented tragedy, but then I wouldn't have had Xel or my babies." She shrugged. "I could have easily found a priest to my liking - after all, my ancestors did - but dwelling on it won't do me any good." She spoke with sincerity and it was obvious that the terrorism haunted her, despite the light tone she adopted. However, she knew Xel had been worth fighting for.

"Why would someone buy a pet if zeir building does not allow zem?" Gavril asked, a bit confused, "I mean, I am away zat people do stupid zings, but..."

"And how come pets are not allowed in most places?" Andreea said.

------

"Oh, do not get me wrong; I do not zink about zem a lot. I know enough not to let what could have been consume my life, I would never get anyzing done," Gavrila said, "But sometimes late at night, when I am laying alone in bed, my mind wanders. And sometimes it wanders to ze 'what if's."

She took another swig of her vodka and continued on, "Sometimes it is not worz it to zink about if you made ze right choice. You make a decision, it has consequences, and you cannot go back. Zere is no reason to get hung up on ze past."

"Most buildings are owned by the companies for which they work or are sublet by those companies," Xel explained. "It is very rare to own one's own apartment in the city, so the building owners are the ones who make the rules." He shrugged. "I'm sure some of them allow pets or certain kinds of pets otherwise we wouldn't have pet stores."

---

Jia Li nodded. "So then you should find out what happened to him. You already know it's one of two options: he either moved on or he didn't. Best case scenario: you can date him again."

"Ah, zat makes sense," Gavril said, "Zough pets are generally somezing zat most buildings here allow regardless. Zough apartments usually limit it to small animals."

------

"Yeah, I know. I will," she said, "And you can trust on zat, I will look into it once I get back home. I do not zink I will try to date him again if he is single zough, zings change and so do people."

Xel shook his head. "The Palace rule was basically if you were allowed a lock, you were allowed a pet, but most people were satisfied with the chitaels. I never had time for a pet, to be honest."

---

Jia Li shrugged again. "My experience is based on what my friends' have done and I told you a little bit about Ned and Yuri. My other friends' relationships are more complicated, but I think their sex lives ironically are not." She was referring to the High Guardsmen, present company included, who had a completely different view on relationships than the rest of the populace.

"True, and we do not exactly have anyzing like ze chitaels around here in Cetatsenia," Gavril said, "I suppose zat could be a reason pets are more common here."

------

"My experience is based on what I have gone zrough," Gavrila said with a shrug, "People can change over ze course of a few monzs from what I have seen. So several years? I do not zink it would be worz it to try and get back wiz him. I am better off finding a new man."

Xel nodded. "Possibly, though you make it sound like they are everywhere. They are quite prevalent and chitaels are allowed to go wherever they please, but they also have large ranges, so it's possible that a single chitael has several families," he said. "The working chitaels are an exception, of course. We have a kennel below the Plateau near the stables."

---

Jia Li shrugged. "Valid point. People do change," she agreed. She took another sip of wine and decided that perhaps a change of topic was in order. "Tell me more about your home."

"Zat still does not change ze fact zat we do not have animals zat wander around ze city," Gavril said smiling, "Which chitael are. And what exactly do working chitaels do? I mean, are zey just for security or do zey serve ozer purposes?"

------

"It is not a castle I can tell you zat much," Gavrila said, her grin returning to her face, "It is newer zan ze Palatul Regal, so it actually looks like a damn palace. It was made primarily for ze Knez's comfort, not as a fortification."

"It depends on their job, actually," Xel replied. "Some help with search and rescue. Others provide security. Quite a few are 'guide dogs' and some still keep them as hunting companions. Basically, if a dog could be trained to do it, it's also highly likely we have chitaels do it. Demonessians never domesticated wolves for some reason. Probably because chitaels were friendlier."

---

"Is there an older structure that had been used as a fortification?" Jia Li asked curiously.
