If one was to take a place from the nation of Demoness to Cetatsenia, one would most likely see the dichotomy that the nation was rather known for. In the southern parts of the nation one would notice the highlands, heavily forested and almost untouched by man aside from the winding roads and the occasional town. But further north, the terrain would give away to the lowlands of the Centric Basin. This land was flat, and lacked the expansive forests, though there were smaller isolated forests. But the main difference one would notice would be the level of development, it was dominated by a large amount of farmland as the lowland soil was incredibly fertile, but there was also the occasional city, bustling with people.

Albraustana-zid was one such city, and it was the primate city of Cetatsenia, the richest and most populous and most important of them all. It was built along both sides of the great Albastru River that ran through much of Cetatsenia, though most of it was on the southern bank of the river. This was because of the simple fact that Albraustana-zid had begun life as three separate forts and settlements built along the river. Albrau and Stana had been built on the Southern bank, and over time had grown together until they were finally united into Albraustana. And while Zid would eventually become part of the greater whole, for a long time it was simply considered a city separated from the capital only by the river.

Since it had grown organically over the numerous years, and had once been three separate cities, the streets and roads had a habit of being winding and could be complicated to navigate for those unfamiliar with them who had no map. Though the roads had over time been widened and revamped in order to accommodate cars, and the newest sections of the city on the outskirts actually had a gridded street plan. As it was the middle of the day, the streets were currently filled with cars and buses, and the sidewalks filled with pedestrians, while the newest addition to the city's transportation network, the subway system, ran below the streets.

While there was a number of attractions in the city, such as the museums and baths, one of the most prominent is the Palatul Regal, the Royal Palace. The site of the original settlement of Albrau and lying atop a hill, it has been torn down or otherwise destroyed and then subsequently rebuilt several times throughout history. The most recent being the ascension of Ioan I to the throne of Cetatsenia, though it has been renovated and updated since then.

The Palace itself is surrounded by a wall that rings the entirety of the hill, with only a single gate leading up to it. The wall is patrolled by a special corps of Cetatsenian soldiers, easily identified by their bright blue ceremonial uniforms and ornate, pointed helmets. After that, a road lead up to the palace proper, an expansive building with a stone exterior that shared more in common with a medieval castle than what one thinks of when they hear the word 'palace'. It was home to a fair number of servants, as well as the guardsmen, and a small number of government officials. Most of those lived out in the city, and worked in their own buildings. It was absolutely huge, and in front of it was an expansive pool of water. Overall, it was an impressive sight that could be seen from a good portion of the city.

At the moment, however, Voivode Gavril IV Suveraneshti was not at his home in the palace. Rather he was at the airport, which had been cleared of any citizens besides him, the guards arrayed with him, and those who worked there; all flights to this airport had either been delayed or rerouted to other nearby airports. Today was an important day, as this was the decided upon day of Jia Li's visit to Cetatsenia. As two nations whose relationship could be accurately described as "mutually neutral", this was a rather important meeting, and Gavril did not want to mess anything up. So he stood alongside his older sister Andreea, the Steward of Cetatsenia, in the airport, ready to head out onto the tarmac to greet the Empress as soon as her plane set down.

"Oh, I see. Zat is actually quite interesting," Gavril said, "You may find it hard to believe, but we have great rats za serve in some of zose functions."

"For some reason ze concept of a bomb-sniffing or search-and-rescue rat is strange to foreigners," Andreea explained, "I guess zey do not stop to zink zat rats have quite ze sense of smell as well."

------

"Of course, it is called Vale Sângerat keep," Gavrila said, and then grinned, "It means 'Bloody Vale' keep, and it is perched atop ze hill at ze entrance to ze valley Dreaptoras sits in. And let me tell you, ze view from up zere is beautiful."

Xel shook his head. "I think it is more that they don't consider them as easily trained," he replied. "But then again, humans have a long relationship with dogs and it's not the same with other species."

---

"Oh my, that's certainly a descriptive name. Was there a battle there or something?" Jia Li asked.

Gavril shrugged, "I suppose zat makes sense. Zough it is different wiz our rats, zey have domesticated for a very long time. People still zink it is weird zough."

Andreea scratched underneath Behemoth's chin as he lounged on her shoulder, "I zink it is unfair zat so many cultures just zink of rats as pests."

------

"Yeah actually, a pretty fucking big one from historical accounts," Gavrila said, "Ze castle was nameed 'Bloody Vale' in honour of a battle zat left so many dead zat ze river zat runs zrough ze valley supposedly ran completely red wiz blood."

Gavrila shrugged, "Zat is probably an over exaggeration, but zere are records of a minor plague in Dreaptoras not soon after."

Xel shrugged. "They have been pests in most cultures though."

---

"That much blood would make people sick," Jia Li said thoughtfully. "I have to say that most places in Demoness aren't named like that. If they have 'blood' in their name, it's in honor of the Goddesses rather than an event."

"It is still an unfair way to zink of zem all zough," Gavril said, "Because not all of zem are."

"Zat has never stopped people from forming incorrect opinions before," Andreea said thoughtfully.

Gavril just shrugged, "I suppose you are right. It is still unfair zough."

------

"Well ze Keep was built after ze war, and it was really just a big 'fuck you' from Anton de Sud, one of ze founders of House de Sud, to ze area's former ruler, Aurelia ze Arrogant," Gavrila said, "Supposedly Anton tore down Aurelia's own castle, used ze remains to construct Vale Sângerat keep, and zen named it after ze battle, which was a major defeat for Ioan I's enemies. Which included old Aurelia."

"Life isn't fair," Xel asserted. He looked back at the door, perhaps expecting to see his wife there. It wasn't that the conversation bored him - in fact, he enjoyed the company - but long absences between the two of them was strange and generally unnecessary.

---

"Was Anton descended from Aurelia?"

"Just because life is unfair does not mean you should not endeavour to change zat fact," Gavril said, smiling, "Ze world would be much better if it was fair. And while zat is not possible, every little bit counts."

Andreea was going to say something else, however she noticed Xel glancing at the door. "Is zere somezing ze matter?" she asked.

------

"Nope, not at all," Gavrila said, she took another drink of her vodka and was going to leave it at that, but figured she might as well explain it some more, "You see, Aurelia was ze Knez of zat area before Ioan I came. In fact, Dreaptoras was a damn big settlement when compared to some of ze ozer ones. Anyway, when Ioan declared his wars, Aurelia refused to submit. However, ze bitch was so certain zat Ioan would be defeated zat when she marched her army off to fight zem, she left almost nobody zere to defend her land. Anton's forces moved in, occupied it, and ze battle I mentioned earlier was Aurelia and her allies' attempt to take it back."

Xel shook his head. "No. I just noticed that your palace is quieter. I'm used to a lot of background noise," he answered.

---

"So how was Anton able to raise an army? Was he like another knez?" Jia Li asked.

"Well, it is getting later at night, and ze head servant told everyone to do zeir best not to disturb our guests," Andreea said.

"Which I still zink was unnecessary," Gavril said to Adreea, obviously reiterating a point he'd made before.

------

"Well, kind of. Ze story of Anton and his twin brozer Artur is pretty interesting one," Gavrila said, taking yet another drink, "Zeir fazer was a Knez, but he did not want to favour eizer of his twin sons. So, he named zem boz his heirs and when he died zey ruled ze Knezate jointly. Only problem was, Anton and Artur were two very different people. Ze reason zey joined Ioan I in ze first place was because he promised to split ze Sudic Highlands between zem, give zem boz zeir own Knezate. Ze rulers of Sudest are Anton's descedants, while zose in Sudvest are Artur's descensants."

Then Gavrila chuckled, "Hell, zere is still somezing of a rivalry between ze two branches of House de Sud. But it is not somezing I have ever cared for, and it is a friendly rivalry more often zan not."

"This quiet is actually a bit unsettling," Xel said in what could be described as his "joking" tone. "There's no need to be quiet on our behalf. Even if we didn't have a large population, the chitaels make their own noise and most nights the windows are left open, so there are also the sounds of the city."

---

Jia Li nodded. "Interesting choice. Normally, one would split the 'knezate' between the twins rather than have them rule jointly; it makes it much easier on heirs as well." She paused. "Twins are not that popular, despite my family's lineage, but I believe the solution for the Clans is normally an advantageous marriage." She shrugged. "Or in the past it was more likely the elder twin would be assassinated."
