If one was to take a place from the nation of Demoness to Cetatsenia, one would most likely see the dichotomy that the nation was rather known for. In the southern parts of the nation one would notice the highlands, heavily forested and almost untouched by man aside from the winding roads and the occasional town. But further north, the terrain would give away to the lowlands of the Centric Basin. This land was flat, and lacked the expansive forests, though there were smaller isolated forests. But the main difference one would notice would be the level of development, it was dominated by a large amount of farmland as the lowland soil was incredibly fertile, but there was also the occasional city, bustling with people. Albraustana-zid was one such city, and it was the primate city of Cetatsenia, the richest and most populous and most important of them all. It was built along both sides of the great Albastru River that ran through much of Cetatsenia, though most of it was on the southern bank of the river. This was because of the simple fact that Albraustana-zid had begun life as three separate forts and settlements built along the river. Albrau and Stana had been built on the Southern bank, and over time had grown together until they were finally united into Albraustana. And while Zid would eventually become part of the greater whole, for a long time it was simply considered a city separated from the capital only by the river. Since it had grown organically over the numerous years, and had once been three separate cities, the streets and roads had a habit of being winding and could be complicated to navigate for those unfamiliar with them who had no map. Though the roads had over time been widened and revamped in order to accommodate cars, and the newest sections of the city on the outskirts actually had a gridded street plan. As it was the middle of the day, the streets were currently filled with cars and buses, and the sidewalks filled with pedestrians, while the newest addition to the city's transportation network, the subway system, ran below the streets. While there was a number of attractions in the city, such as the museums and baths, one of the most prominent is the Palatul Regal, the Royal Palace. The site of the original settlement of Albrau and lying atop a hill, it has been torn down or otherwise destroyed and then subsequently rebuilt several times throughout history. The most recent being the ascension of Ioan I to the throne of Cetatsenia, though it has been renovated and updated since then. The Palace itself is surrounded by a wall that rings the entirety of the hill, with only a single gate leading up to it. The wall is patrolled by a special corps of Cetatsenian soldiers, easily identified by their bright blue ceremonial uniforms and ornate, pointed helmets. After that, a road lead up to the palace proper, an expansive building with a stone exterior that shared more in common with a medieval castle than what one thinks of when they hear the word 'palace'. It was home to a fair number of servants, as well as the guardsmen, and a small number of government officials. Most of those lived out in the city, and worked in their own buildings. It was absolutely huge, and in front of it was an expansive pool of water. Overall, it was an impressive sight that could be seen from a good portion of the city. At the moment, however, Voivode Gavril IV Suveraneshti was not at his home in the palace. Rather he was at the airport, which had been cleared of any citizens besides him, the guards arrayed with him, and those who worked there; all flights to this airport had either been delayed or rerouted to other nearby airports. Today was an important day, as this was the decided upon day of Jia Li's visit to Cetatsenia. As two nations whose relationship could be accurately described as "mutually neutral", this was a rather important meeting, and Gavril did not want to mess anything up. So he stood alongside his older sister Andreea, the Steward of Cetatsenia, in the airport, ready to head out onto the tarmac to greet the Empress as soon as her plane set down. Gavril listened closely to Xel's explanation. He was mostly certain that it was probably just coincidence or luck, but he had to admit that it was quite strange that someone would be able to consistently choose the correct jar. But then again, there were stranger things that were unexplainable. "Hmmm, I have to admit zat zat is actually pretty interesting," Gavril said, "But what happens if ze vassal happens to choose incorrectly? You say zat ze current one saved ze previous one's life, but certainly you do not just let zem die if zey choose wrong. Right?" "Zat would be fucked up," Gavrila added, having stopped participating in the silent argument with Andreea to listen to Xel's answer. Andreea had stopped glaring at Gavrila as well, but she did sigh in irritation at Gavrila's unnecessary addition. |

Xel shook his head. "I'm honestly not certain. I imagine the proctor would stop the trial then, but we've only personally witnessed a handful of trials and that did not occur," he replied, though he knew in antiquity the Vessels had been allowed to die for their mistake. A Vessel, doubting xyr ability, was supposed to announce this prior to the trial, which would be then called off, but many were too stubborn or proud and died instead. Mistakes could also be made: the trial could contain anything from zero to seven full jars and it wouldn't be unreasonable to assume a jar may be accidentally mislabeled. "Miyamoto was the one to stop Diomasachi, not the proctor and, as I said, she has passed all her trials." |

Gavril thought about Xel's answer for a moment before he shrugged, "I suppose zat is understandable." "Damn, zat sounds like it would still be a lot of pressure zough," Gavrila said, "Get it right or, you know, possibly die." |

Xel shrugged. "If you're not confident in your abilities, you don't have to take the trial. You simply surrender your position. You can guess how popular that decision is." |

"I would assume not very," Gavrila said, shrugging, "People can be stubborn idiots, no matter where zey are from."

Xel nodded. "There are recorded cases of Vessels dying," he admitted. "But I imagine it's no different from failure in any other job. It's just that this one is life or death." |

Gavrila shrugged, "Eh, I suppose if zey are willing to risk it zen zat is great for zem. Zey are still stubborn idiots if zey do not zink zey can and still try it anyway, zough." "I would still hope zat zere would be some sort of medical aid on hand if zey choose wrong. At least in zis day and age," Gavril said, "Zere is a difference between dying because you risked your life and could not be saved and dying because you risked your life and nobody bozered to help." |

Xel shrugged. "I imagine there is an antivenom or other medical attention available, but I have never personally verified it." Jia Li frowned. "I'm going to look into that when I go home. It never entered my mind to ask," she admitted sheepishly. "I assumed." |

Gavril cocked his head and looked at Jia Li for a moment, thinking. It was rather strange that she hadn't bothered to make sure that there was medical aid nearby during something as potentially dangerous as these tests seemed to be. And it wasn't like it was something minor that she'd just overlooked, it was obviously something that was fairly major and important. It seemed like making sure the person was at least somewhat safe would be fairly important. But then again, the fact that she just assumed it was safe meant she trusted the people in control, which was important as well. However, he decided not to mention this since it didn't seem particularly important and he didn't want to offend Jia Li. Andreea was just somewhat happy that the conversation had gone in a slightly different direction. It seemed like Jia Li had, at least somewhat, forgotten her offense at Gavrila's suggestion that the Oracle wasn't real. Gavrila on the other hand was curious about something, "Just how poisonous are zese snakes anyway?" |

"Fairly poisonous. They are asps," Jia Li replied, forgetting that English allowed the word "asp" to refer to several different vipers. She didn't know much about the snakes either, never having seen them personally; as far as she knew, they didn't actually exist and the whole trial was simply ceremonial. The trials and the Oracle were under the control of the priesthood and while she could dictate policy and interpretation, there were limits to her power on ritual. Use of the Oracle had been set down by Ruarc Ruadha's successor and was seen as practically sacred, even if it had not come from the mouth of the Goddesses like many other rules had. Everything about the Oracle was purposely esoteric. However, the asps were another story. If they were used at all, it was highly likely they were a breed of cobra native to the Burning Ocean. Like many things from the desert, they were deadly, but it was possible to have an antivenom administered within four hours and not suffer any serious side effects. Even an untreated bite could theoretically be survived at the cost of the skin or even the limb attached to the bite wound; this was certainly not advisable as it could also cause permanent brain damage. |
