New Aedmon - May 19th, 1995 It was a cool spring evening in New Aedmon; the rains that had started the week before having finally let up. Erryn stood on the balcony attached to the rooms he normally shared with his brother, looking out over the courtyard and the stars above. He found himself watching the stars more and more these days, not to mention the other planets that crossed the night's sky. Tonight he was watching for a meteor shower that was predicted to begin in a few minutes. He was so glued to the sky and the other heavenly bodies that he didn't notice his brother sneaking up on him. Ned swiftly grabbed him around the chest, pinning his arms to his body while Hikari reluctantly wrapped a blindfold around his eyes. Erryn struggled a bit, but was unable to gain the leverage to break free from his brother's bear hug. "What in the hell?! Who? wha?" he exclaimed. "Now now Erryn, what would mother say? Thirteen and already swearing. Tsk," he said, letting him go and starting to laugh. "How is the birthday boy?" Erryn peeled the bandana off of his face and punched Ned in the shoulder. "One, hell is not a cuss word. Two, it was fine until you tried to scare the living shit out of me!" He looked over at Hikari. "And you even dragged her into your shenanigans." He glared at Ned a moment longer before giving in to the laughing. "I'm doing alright. I thought you wouldn't be able to make it?" Ned nodded. "I managed to put off my return trip to Demoness a few weeks. Speaking of which...." Ned looked around the room. "Where's the cake?" Erryn looked at him a moment in confusion. "Cake?" Ned raised his eyebrow and gave Erryn a blank stare. "Your birthday cake?" "Oh, right. Duh. Should be in the dining room, but I'm not sure," Erryn replied. "Well? Lead on!" Ned commanded. Erryn walked into the small kitchenette that most of the suites in the palace contained. He paused, then looked around the kitchenette in confusion due to the distinct lack of cake on the counter. "Uh... what'd you do with it?" Ned stared at him. "What do you mean 'what did I do with it'? I didn't touch it. If I had there'd just be half of a cake sitting there, not a glaringly huge absence of baked goodness." Erryn scrunched up his face in a mixture of thought and disappointment. "Maybe Mom squirreled it away somewhere or had the kitchen keep it for her until Dad got out of his meetings today?" he speculated. "Ugh, sounds like something she'd do. Should be a crime to keep birthday revelers away from their baked goods," Ned said with mock disgust. "Well, that can be one of the first laws you can pass once you're Emperor." "Sure, right behind the adjustment of the military budget for giant mechas and space-born superlasers," Ned replied with a laugh. "Oh well." He looked at Erryn and Hikari. "So... we've got a little time to kill, want to watch something? We've got Army of Darkness and Jurassic Park on VHS now!" |

In the main palace kitchen a group in chef's coats worked on the finishing touches of a large cake. The original cake that had sat in the princes' kitchenette sat to the side on a counter, as if forgotten. As they finished, they set down their tools and carefully loaded the cake onto a cart. "It's time. Kathryn, take this up to the suite," the head chef said. "Certainly, Sven. I'll let you know what's happening when I get back from upstairs." Sven nodded to her as she started to push the cake out of the kitchen. He nodded to the others in the kitchen as he walked over and opened the walk-in fridge where the unconscious kitchen staff laid, bound and gagged. "Don't worry gents, you won't have to worry about this much longer." |

There was a slight knock at the door and Ned paused the movie just as Lex was about to take a bite of Jello. He made his way across the room as Erryn and Hikari turned to see who was knocking. He opened the door and was greeted by Kathryn. "Good afternoon, Prince. I have a birthday cake here from the kitchen staff for your brother. Your mother had us hide away the other one, but she didn't say we couldn't give you ours," she said with a wink. Ned grinned and gestured her into the suite. "Thanks! Right over here will be good." He helped her move the cake onto the table and grinned. "Would you like to join us for a slice?" Kathryn shook her head. "No, I've got to get back to the kitchen. Thank you though." She looked around the room. "Just you all?" Ned nodded. "For now." "Is that for me?" Erryn shouted from the other room. Ned laughed and shook his head. "Don't let us keep you, then. Pass our thanks to the kitchen. Kathryn nodded. "Don't worry, I will." She pushed the cart out and closed the door behind her, quickly making her way back down to the kitchen. |
