Loading… Loading… Loaded. Welcome to Zombie Zone. Jan took a sip from his tea as he clicked on his character and waited for the loading to finish. He only had the one character, which was all you got in the free edition, if you wanted more you had to pay for it with a monthly fee. The loading screen finished and he was treated to a brief animation of his character getting out of bed after which “Zyw” was free to roam the world of ZZ. Jan frowned at his avatar, he had had so much interesting stuff until his death but now Zyw was stuck almost exclusively in “standard kit”, or its winter version as the game did try to keep up with the seasons. Jan nodded to himself; he would have to remember to carry fuel for fires as only noobs let their characters freeze to death. Good thing he had remembered to put some stuff in the bars locker, though it wasn’t much but the backpack was slightly better than the free one while the balaclava would help with the cold and reduce his visibility. The steel helmet, though far from good, would help keep his character alive and the 9mm pistol was still a better weapon than the .22 pistol. Some players complained that the helmets and masks made it difficult to see their characters face but Jan didn’t mind as A) His character looked badass in a balaclava and B) The free version only had a small number of customisation options for avatars. Looking at the clock Jan saw it was almost the time his “comrades” were usually online, if they showed they could go out together, safety in numbers and whatnot. Thus Zyw was directed towards the bar, with its so bad it was good music (in truth the designers were constantly adding new tunes, some of it apparently written by fans) and plenty of other characters doing their things, asking for permission he was invited to a game of Hearts (one of the things that many players enjoyed about ZZ were the mini games). Cursing as he had received the queen of spades Jan began plotting on how to dump the unfortunate card on someone… |

Moonchild slammed into the table beside him, apparently not granting the game enough time to load the option to "sit". Like him, she was in a standard kit with only the lightest of winter clothing and she was without a backpack. She didn't even have her normal weaponry - stuff she discovered through combining random items to see what the results were - and consequently looked less steampunk and more like the poor "free" players. She was a pay-to-win player, which was most often clear in the gear she had equipped. If it was straight up purchasable from the in-game store - instead of having to find the item and then unlocking the necessary skills - and she liked it, she owned it. Her character's appearance had a level of customization that she displayed whenever they were indoors and out of danger, but tonight her face was covered with armor. While she didn't have a starter pistol - no one was that embarrassing - the weapon she had was worse than Jan's. Her health bar and the animation of her character indicated she was in rough condition and when she sat down she immediately began eating expensive rations to restore her health. Her text came across the screen as her health was replenished. "I am getting really tired of the nankeda camped outside the town. This bounty is getting out of hand, I cant even leave the city limits!" She soon received an invite to his game of Hearts and joined as she sent, "It was funny when it was only 10 gusy and i Could still kill them if I planned right but now theres like guys following me everytime I leave the city. Ive gotten killed 8 times today" |

- ‘Eight? That is a bit, Moon.’ He typed a somewhat sympathetic response, though promptly followed with something less so. - ‘I think I mentioned that people are vengeful at some point and they’d make life miserable if they can. Have you sent a message to the mods?’ That was always an option, though personally Jan thought the mods enjoyed the PKing going on. However if you were to believe certain sources they did intervene if things got out of hand. - ‘I’d help but I’ve lost my good stuff, was kinda hoping you or the other guys would give me a hand in clearing out one of those NPC bandit camps for the loot. Not much of an option now.’ Ending it with a L he continued playing as he thought over the matter. - ‘We could leave the city together with a larger group. Lose them in the forest and then, I don’t know, scavenge around in a village? Maybe see if we can find the ingredients for a crossbow in the scrap yard? Or maybe, wait a moment. Gotta check something.’ Jan minimized the window and brought up a forum, looked through the messages before finding what he was looking for. - ‘Apparently there is a military radio post somewhere in the Kalik mountains. Lots of armoured zombies and wild animals but apparently some military grade loot as well. Think we could manage?’ He reported. |

There was a few minutes of silence while Selene considered her options. She had thought about reporting the griefing to the mods, but considering her past behavior with Raz0r - the player who had convinced his group to place the bounty on her head - and other players, she believed the mods would just laugh in her face. After all, she had initiated the feud. She enjoyed killing players - they often had better loot - but she tended to focus on players who had angered her, such as someone who had tagged her quest items. Sometimes she killed them until they left the area, but other times her victims were either lucky or more skilled than her. In those cases, she may try a few more times and then give up; regardless, she could afford to replace all her stuff. This time, however, her extensive bank account couldn't save her: the feud hadn't ended when one of them logged off. "i replaced som of my kit but I cant afford to keep replcing it so its in storage im using spare gear until the leav me alone" She minimized the game as she pulled up a map. Kalik wasn't far away and she could survive the trip as long as Zyw kept attention on himself. She could deal damage well enough, but she dealt more when the enemy ignored her. She sighed; the game hadn't been this hard since she started. "if I can get out of the village. stupid guys somehow see me even when Im cloaked *growl* Ive been looking for some spare kevlar. I have an idea for a new recipe thatmight work. itll be slow going tho, like when i first started. I spent a lot of rl $$ replacing my tiems already so i gotta wear this gear utnil im sure they're gone" She looked in her inventory and frowned. She never used this other gear; it was all stuff she'd forgotten to sell or had "sentimental" value for one reason or another. "oh hey um can i borrow some pants? I only have spring trousers and Id rather not get frostbite "It was winter and standard kits were relatively cheap in-game; she could have afforded pants. Edited by Demoness, Dec 21 2013, 09:41 AM.

"Moony, I swear you're worse than me sometimes," Psiho said, walking up to the pair after listening to them for a bit. He was wearing a hooded winter trench coat and thick pants, which thankfully made up for the fact that his character wasn't wearing a shirt. Psiho died quite a bit, but he didn't really mind because he died playing the way he enjoyed, up close and personal with some sort of melee weapon. Some people wanted a nice flashy gun, but all Psiho needed was a large knife or a fireaxe to be happy. At present he had the former as he'd died recently. He'd had the misfortune to ambush another player who had a shotgun; they got a lucky shot on his head before Psiho could finish him off. "So, the Kalik Mountains, huh?" he asked, "I prefer human enemies over zombies and animals, but I can make do. Any of them have helmets, you're dealing with them though." Moonchild went through the animation of flirting: smiling, batting her eyes, clasping her hands bashfully, and circling her toe on the floor in front of her. "i just need to borrow a pair nutil we get back "

- 'Heya Psiho.' Zyw waved at the next member of their group to show up. The game finished with Zyw being second to last so he got from his chair to head for the bar to access his safe. - ‘And Moon, pants? Seriously? I’ll see what I got but I’m treating this as an investment.’ His complaint voiced he started the conversation with the npc and soon was shifting through the things had put away. Surprisingly enough there was a spare pair, not the best condition and an unhelpful colour but it was a pair of winter pants. A left ctrl and click later he had them in his inventory and walked back to his comrades, glitching slightly on the bar. Standing in front of Moonchild there was a moment’s silence before more text appeared. - ‘Uh, how do you trade again?’ Having received his instructions Zyw made the trade and Moonchild became the owner of a new, used pair of winter trousers. - ‘So, kalik. We waiting for night and try to sneak by Moon’s friends or do we see if a larger group will allow us to tag along and hope they’ll leave moon alone rather than take on everyone?’ |

"I vote we try and sneak by," Psiho said, "After all, there's no guarantee that the larger group won't know about her bounty and kill her. And us. And plus, I like sneaking." He did sneak around quite a bit, and he'd actually decided that was the best course of action rather quickly on. You could only charge headfirst at some guy with a gun and die so many times before it started to get old. That was why Psiho played the game as an ambusher and backstabber. It was far easier to kill another character or an NPC with a knife when they didn't know you were there. Edited by Cetatsenia, Dec 21 2013, 12:50 PM.

"Do you think they washed these before seeling them?" she joked as she put them on. Selene looked at the stat difference; not bad, but she really only cared about its ability to counteract frostbite. Frostbite was a surprisingly realistic mechanic, slowing down and disabling characters, and it took days for affected limbs to return to normal; it was generally quicker to strip down, store all of one's equipment, and purposely die than to wait. "if we can get a larger goupr thatd be great, but what moon phase is it? If its the full moon, theyre goign to see us regardless of what time of day it is. i vote finding a group for now." Her bounty situation must be getting to her; she rarely volunteered to enter a party. "as long as theyre not n00bs" Nope. That comment confirmed she was fine. |

- ‘I don’t know Psicho. We’re from the same city here; people won’t look kindly on hunting one of our own… would they? I think we should tag along with a group. And yes Moon, we’ll try to find a group that looks badass.’ That proved relatively easy as Biscuit and his friends occupied one of the bars tables. Biscuit was as close to a legend as was possible having gone since 0.79 without dying, or so they said. The character looked impressive anyway as he and the others were dressed up much like modern Special Forces with the weapons to boot. They were also supposed to be mercenaries, giving a hand to other players in return for credits, artefacts or, supposedly, RL money. - ‘Hey Biscuit, got a moment?’ - ‘Zyw? Haven’t seen you in a while. What is it?’ - ‘I got a problem.’ - ‘That Moonkid giving you grief? She had it coming. I saw te bounty notice on the forums, a lot of people will want in.’ - ‘Moonchild can’t even leave the city. There are guys camping outside.’ - ‘Tell her to make a new account if its that much trouble.’ - ‘Come on Biscuit, would you wantto abandon you’re character?’ This time there was a slight pause. Biscuit hadn’t even moved his avatars position during the conversation, only the others at the table would shift to get Zyw into their view, none of them said anything. - ‘Fine. Send Moongirl over, we’ll see about making a deal.’ Thanking him Zyw went back to Moon with a simple, - ‘He’s willing to help for a reward. it might be the best option but he wants to talk to you.’ |
