Loaded.
Welcome to Zombie Zone.

Jan took a sip from his tea as he clicked on his character and waited for the loading to finish. He only had the one character, which was all you got in the free edition, if you wanted more you had to pay for it with a monthly fee.
The loading screen finished and he was treated to a brief animation of his character getting out of bed after which “Zyw” was free to roam the world of ZZ.

Jan frowned at his avatar, he had had so much interesting stuff until his death but now Zyw was stuck almost exclusively in “standard kit”, or its winter version as the game did try to keep up with the seasons. Jan nodded to himself; he would have to remember to carry fuel for fires as only noobs let their characters freeze to death.

Good thing he had remembered to put some stuff in the bars locker, though it wasn’t much but the backpack was slightly better than the free one while the balaclava would help with the cold and reduce his visibility. The steel helmet, though far from good, would help keep his character alive and the 9mm pistol was still a better weapon than the .22 pistol.

Some players complained that the helmets and masks made it difficult to see their characters face but Jan didn’t mind as A) His character looked badass in a balaclava and B) The free version only had a small number of customisation options for avatars.

Looking at the clock Jan saw it was almost the time his “comrades” were usually online, if they showed they could go out together, safety in numbers and whatnot. Thus Zyw was directed towards the bar, with its so bad it was good music (in truth the designers were constantly adding new tunes, some of it apparently written by fans) and plenty of other characters doing their things, asking for permission he was invited to a game of Hearts (one of the things that many players enjoyed about ZZ were the mini games).

Cursing as he had received the queen of spades Jan began plotting on how to dump the unfortunate card on someone…

-"tsss im out of stuff. those guys jacked my fave gun!" At least they hadn't looted her knife, which was her favorite weapon. She'd cobbled it together using a recipe she'd invented herself and it was her pride; she hadn't even shared the recipe with her friends, but she claimed that the ingredients were hard to come by. It was probable the knife was is safekeeping for the time being.

Reluctantly, she walked over to Biscuit's table. Her "feminine wiles" hadn't ever worked on him, so she wasn't pleased, but she had to respect him. Most of his gear was not from the store - it was stuff that had to be found in ruins or on difficult monsters - and she'd wanted to kill him too, but he was from their town and she knew her limits.

"-What's it going to take?" she asked, not even bothering to sit. She figured her appearance was enough to show how much trouble she'd been having.

Psiho looked to Biscuit's group, and then back to Zyw. "Really? Biscuit? I don't trust the guy as far as I can throw him," Psiho said in a private message, "But then again, I think that about everybody outside our group, so take that how you will. But what exactly are we supposed to pay him with? We aren't exactly bathing in credits."

Psiho was definitely a cautious player, he didn't trust anyone outside his group of friends. He only ever went out with his group or by himself, it may have cost him his life more than once but he considered it better than the alternative: possibly getting pulled into a trap.

- 'You realize what kind of sh*t your in so you can guess it ain't cheap. but details...'

There was a pause, maybe he was thinking about what to charge, maybe he was discussing the issue with his group. Soon he was talking again.

- 'It'll depend. How are you paying? And what exactly do you want from us, scare away the guys camping under our town or do you want us going after the guy that placed the bounty on you and make his gaming life a hell?'

At this point the avatars of Biscuits group all shifted their attention directly on her.

Zyw sighed at Psiho question but answered soon enough.

- 'Because he's a professional. If he takes a contract he finishes it. Nobody has anyhting bad to say about his work. As for pay... guess that depends on what Moon is willing to give him and how good a mood Biscuit is in.'

There was a moments pause before Zyw started again.

- 'Please tell me you got a gun on you. axes are fun but at times you just need a gun.'

"You never need a gun if you play right," Psiho responded, after having his character shrug. Then after a moment added, "That means no. I never carry any kind of firearm."

"And I still say we ditch Biscuit and just try and sneak past the guys after Moony."

Selene considered her options. A vengeful little voice in her head told her to place a bounty on all their heads, but if Biscuit didn't follow through or, worse, exacerbated the problem, there was no way she'd be able to continue playing. She could always start a new character, but after the work she put into Moonchild, she'd rather just walk away. And she could continue playing, even with the bounty on her head, but her mother - or rather, her mother's accountant - would start to question the amount she was spending on the game and put a limit on her. While she didn't spend too much of real world money on her account, constantly having to replace stuff would get her right to play revoked. Her mother didn't even know she played and would have disapproved if she had.

She sighed and then typed, "-How much to kill the guy until he removes the bounty? How much to scare the guys away? I need to know my options."

-‘Removing the guys from under town, 16 000 000 credits. Lump sum or its equivalent in artifacts or gold it doesn't matter to us. Striking at the source of the problem is 80 000 000, same rules. Price is not open for discussion.’

-‘What am I to do with you?’

Zyw replied to Psiho, throwing in the animation for “exasperated” for good mix.

- ‘And it still might come to that, though I’d rather it didn’t. Moons been trying to sneak by them already and they got her...’

Psiho's character shrugged yet again, "Hey, it's the way I play. I'm in this game to have fun, and that's how I have fun. And I hope it does come to that, I'm certain that Biscuit's help isn't going to come cheap; besides, it should be easier with the three of us."

Psiho was good at sneaking around, it was necessary for the way he played. And if they did get caught, it was more likely they'd survive with the three of them. He just really didn't feel like working with Biscuit and his group, he wasn't fond of having the group (or anyone in it) asking for help. He preferred to have the issue solved with just their group.

Selene sneered at the price behind her keyboard. The bounty had already cost her the equivalent of 300,000 gold already in replacement costs and while she was good for it - purchasing gold in game was frowned upon, but easy - there was no way her mother's accountant wouldn't question that transaction.

She sent a private message to both Zyw and Psiho. "Biscuit says he can rid the town of the guys for 60k. Ive got collateral but id rather go to the fields than give it to him. any ideas about negotiation?" It had taken several conversations to figure out that "the fields" was slang for the Field of Suicides, the Morante equivalent of Purgatory and Hell.

"I'd say either try and sneak out again, with our help of course, or get ready to head on down to the fields," Psiho said in a private message, "Because I don't think Biscuit's gonna negotiate. If you're intent on us going with another group we could always find one that's not quite so badass."

- 'See if he'll accept down to 12 000 000? Maybe you got some rare items stashed away? If not we'll have to see if somebody else will give us a hand or risk doing it on our own.'

Was all Jan could offer. Sometimes he really did wonder about why he hung out with these guys...
