Loaded.
Welcome to Zombie Zone.

Jan took a sip from his tea as he clicked on his character and waited for the loading to finish. He only had the one character, which was all you got in the free edition, if you wanted more you had to pay for it with a monthly fee.
The loading screen finished and he was treated to a brief animation of his character getting out of bed after which “Zyw” was free to roam the world of ZZ.

Jan frowned at his avatar, he had had so much interesting stuff until his death but now Zyw was stuck almost exclusively in “standard kit”, or its winter version as the game did try to keep up with the seasons. Jan nodded to himself; he would have to remember to carry fuel for fires as only noobs let their characters freeze to death.

Good thing he had remembered to put some stuff in the bars locker, though it wasn’t much but the backpack was slightly better than the free one while the balaclava would help with the cold and reduce his visibility. The steel helmet, though far from good, would help keep his character alive and the 9mm pistol was still a better weapon than the .22 pistol.

Some players complained that the helmets and masks made it difficult to see their characters face but Jan didn’t mind as A) His character looked badass in a balaclava and B) The free version only had a small number of customisation options for avatars.

Looking at the clock Jan saw it was almost the time his “comrades” were usually online, if they showed they could go out together, safety in numbers and whatnot. Thus Zyw was directed towards the bar, with its so bad it was good music (in truth the designers were constantly adding new tunes, some of it apparently written by fans) and plenty of other characters doing their things, asking for permission he was invited to a game of Hearts (one of the things that many players enjoyed about ZZ were the mini games).

Cursing as he had received the queen of spades Jan began plotting on how to dump the unfortunate card on someone…

Moonchild slinked off, quietly disappearing. Since she didn't have to worry about the others, she could move at her pace, and that was essential. She walked around for a few minutes, scouting the area for the optimal position, and settled on the "clearing" beneath a particularly large pine. She reduced her speed so that she was practically silent and was careful to conceal her footsteps.

Like most games, ZZ only logged information for a given time, but where it could make a player's life difficult, it seemed to go beyond necessity. In certain terrain types - snow, sand, and mud in particular - footsteps would imprint in the background longer, up to an hour, unless the proper precautions were taken. The was one case where ZZ diverged from reality as it was a simple but rare and expensive item with the skill Traceless Step. Normally, one would have to simply equip it and ones footsteps lasted the same time on "sticky" terrain as it did on normal. Moonchild owned it, but the item had to be kept in one's inventory and she'd purposely left it back in town in case the bounty was renewed.

Since she didn't have Traceless Step and they were tracking through snow, there was little she could do to entirely erase her footsteps, but she did what she could to reduce their profile and stepped only where she thought the snow was shallowest. It took several minutes, but she was able to sneak under the tree to build her sniper's nest. After setting up her rifle on steady ground and adjusting her sights, she messaged her friends. "ready!"

"Alright, I'm gonna head out now," Psiho messaged to others, "And I swear Moony, if something does happen I better not 'accidentally' end up with one of your bullets in my ass again."

It wasn't particularly common, but since Psiho killed people up close and Moonchild killed people from afar there were times when they went after the same person. And sometimes Moonchild's bullet accidentally ended up lodged inside Psiho's character. Though Psiho wasn't entirely sure it was always an accident, and it rarely ever actually killed him.

So he got down as close to the ground as his character would go, and slowly made his way towards the bridge. He was glad that he had a white winter coat, and that it was a thick one; it did a pretty good job of protecting him from the cold. He stopped periodically to look around make sure he didn't see anything; Moonchild may be watching with her rifle, but two pairs of eyes were more likely to catch something than one. Eventually he reached the bridge without incident, though he didn't let his guard down.

"All right, I'm over," he messaged to the two of them, mostly for Zyw's sake in case he'd lost sight of Psiho in the snow.

The bridge was a brick and metal construction, the snow undisturbed. No movement was to be seen but Psiho could see decayed bodies on the bridge, not that that was odd. The game was strewn with decomposed bodies to add to the atmosphere but while most were simple decorations some were "lurkers".

A common source of death for noobs and newbies even veterans sometimes found themselves falling prey to the proximity located attackers who would conduct a grappling attack leaving the player having to successfully conduct an attack to knock off the attacker and avoid getting attacked immediately afterwards.

What Psiho could see of the other bank did not seem to indicate any danger.

- 'Understood Psiho. Moon I'm moving, keep your eyes open.'

That done Zyw started his move across the open ground.

"got you covered"

She despised the mechanic for the scope. It tried to be "realistic" and moved with each "breath"; she knew in real life she could hold her breath, but she compensated as best she could in the game. She made sure Psiho was safe, at least for the moment, and then trained her sights on Zyw and checked his path. She didn't see anything.

Reaching the bridge without incident but finding Psiho not moving Jan quickly typed,

- 'Whats up?' - followed by a simple - 'Ok."

Once he was told.

- 'Nothing for it, you check the stiffs, I'll make sure they don't tackle you.'

That done he also sent a quick message to Moon informing her of the situation they had, finishing with a,

- 'Don't jump if you hear screams, it'll put your aim off :P.'

"All right, let's do this," Pisho said, as his character began an idle animation where he stretched his arms out a bit.

And so he set out at the job. The first corpse he came to was that of a man leaning up against the railing; his character walked up to it and with the press of a button drew his knife from his belt. The knife was actually a fairly nice one, more like a bowie knife than anything you'd find in a kitchen. He walked up to the corpse and set about "killing" it. Since it was possible to play dead, it was also possible to walk up to a corpse and make sure it was dead. It was why Psiho himself didn't indulge in the practice, it relied too much on luck in his opinion. He pressed a button and watched as his character put his foot on the corpse's chest and plunged his knife into the corpse's eye and through its head, before yanking it free.

Then he looked around to see if any of them were getting up. He didn't think there'd be any human player stupid enough to just lie around in the snow, so if any of them were lurkers they were probably zombies. But one could never underestimate the stupidity of some people, and some players that played dead would stand up and run as soon as they saw another player making sure corpses were dead.

No reaction came from two more of the corpses, only the third suddenly launched itself at Psiho and faltered after having its leg shot, even with the wound it still reached out to Psiho avatar and attempted to close the range, further along the bridge another corpse moved to its feet, the gunshot activating its "attack mode".

A noob would try for a headshot but experienced players soon learned that was largely a waste of bullets, not only was it difficult to hit but also it was not guaranteed to drop one either. To "kill" a zombie one needed to cause extensive damage to it, usually crippling all limbs.

Oh the rage posts on forums when the first version was released, many claimed it was utter nonsense and a "real" zombie would drop instantly from any hit to the head quoting movies and books and dismissing the designers explanation that was simple: "Zombies are fictional characters and thier characteristics depend on the writer. This is how we write them.'

That being said a good blow to the head wasn't useless, it could knock a zombie off its feet and lessen its ability to damage a player, it only meant that even single Zeds were difficult to kill.

Shifting his aim to the further Zombie Jan attempted to likewise shoot its legs from underneath it, leaving Psiho to turn "his" zombie into a harmless pile of virtual, rotting flesh.

- 'Zeds spotted.'

Jan quickly sent an automatic warning to Moon so she would know what the shots were about, as well as to keep her eye open for any other "lurkers" popping up at the sound.

Psiho grinned behind his computer screen as he engaged the zombie, though he was glad Zyw had shot the thing in its leg as that would make it far easier for Pisho to bring the zombie down. Melee weapons weren't always the best thing for killing zombies, especially groups of them. Though if you were good and careful, it wasn't necessarily hard, once again assuming you weren't up against a group.

As the zombie lumbered towards him and made an attempt to grab him, Psiho moved out of the way and got behind the zombie. It was much easier thanks to Zyw's crippling shot, and Psiho wasn't even worried. Once he was around the back of the zombie he slashed repeatedly at the zombie's good leg, crippling it before it was able to turn around. That sent the zombie down on one of its knees, and though it tried to stand back up Psiho finished it off before it got the chance. He watched happily as his character planted its foot on the zombies back and slammed the knife into the base of its neck, causing it to fall to the ground.

Then he looked back up, checking to see how Zyw had fared with his zombie, as well as if the gunshots had "woken up" any more of the damn things.

Selene aimed for the knees of the zombies, intending to knock them off their feet and allow Zwy and Psiho to finish them off at their leisure. After all, crawling zombies were slower than shambling zombies and easier to avoid. However, the scope mechanic did make it more difficult to correctly line up the shots. Her first shot struck the bridge behind the trailing zombie, but her second struck home. The hollow point round severed the limb and the zombie staggered sideways, the concussive force rotating its body toward her. Selene debated the merits of shooting center mass before following through; there was no need to be fancy. Her took less care to aim, since it was an easier target than the limb, and put three shots in its torso; that should be enough to finish it off.

After seeing that Psiho and Zwy had taken care of the rest, she went back to scanning the area. If the noise hadn't rouse any more lurkers, it might have attracted anyone else in the area. That meant her crossing might be particularly dangerous when it came time to do it. She scanned the treeline on the opposite bank first, looking for someone else who might be setting up an ambush, and then moved toward their side of the river.

- kay, looks like were good for now. So rinse and repeat? Me and Psiho will olt across to the wood and we'll cover moon from there, objections?'

Jan typed after he had checked under the bridge for hostiles, reloaded and covered Moonchilds approach.
