Yuanshai officially adopted laicite ideology in 1984, but more than 70% of the population adheres to an animist-Buddhist faith. The Empire has hundreds of political groups known as "clans" or associations of "houses" ( extended families) Yuanshai has a ceremonial monarchy with the position currently being held by Emperor Xinyang of the Liao dynasty. Equal primogeniture is practiced and women have ascended to the throne numerous times throughout history. While the Imperial government is officially secular, the reigning monarch is considered the spiritual leader of the nations' Buddhists. The staple foods of the Empire are rice, soybeans, beans, dairy, micoproteins and various nutritional algaes. The obesity rate is roughly 7% of the population, a result of national vegetarian trends and public emphasis on active lifestyles. All restaurants and food providers are required to label their product's caloric content in it's entirety (ie: no trick serving sizes). Trans-fats are completely banned due to their associated health risk. The legal voting age for all sexes is 18 and all citizens are automatically eligible regardless of wealth, sexual orientation, political affiliation, religious beliefs and so forth. Government offices are completely open to all contenders as personal factors do not (legally) play a part in politics. The official languages of the Empire are Mandarin, [native language?], and Aramdammu. Yuanshai is a unitary state in a sense, although Imperial politics do not fall so easily into Western categories. Yuanshai does have a national draft which is applied to both sexes. In a time of emergency when the draft is called, those conscripted can expect to serve two years with actual combat participation varying from 4 to 6 month cycles The death penalty was abolished in 1972. Homosexuality and same-sex marriage are entirely legal with an overwhelming majority of Imperial citizens supporting LGBTQ rights. Marijuana is legal in Yuanshai, but is generally considered taboo due to anti-drug and alcohol messages espoused by religious figures. Yuanshai is a comprised of several regions such as the hilly midlands, vast deltas, fertile coastal plains and prominent eastern highlands. Racial tensions between the native population and the Siujenese colonial population have flared repeatedly throughout history, but were laid to rest in 1996 with the signing of the Sul'Kyeksien Accords. These documents dealt with genocide acknowledgment, reparations, land disputes and the future protection of Yuanshai's native peoples. Resentment against immigrants continues to plague the nation, especially towards Yuanshai's Christian minority. Yuanshai does not have political parties, instead it has alliances of "houses" called "clans". These clans send delegates to the Grand Council to represent their interests and vote upon policy. Clans further group themselves in Factions for greater cooperation, although these factions play a shadow role to politics. Allegiances continuously shuffle and maneuver so the face of a clan is not always permanent. Yuanmar politics are often described as maddening, twisted, deceptive and completely alien to observers. There are no child limiting policies in force currently, but dormant legislation has been enacted so that such a plan can begin in the face of a looming population crisis. Marriage has no bars minus those of age and as such, interracial unions are legal. The average life expectancy of a Yuanmar female is 91 years old while a male's is 87. A national healthcare system exists and is extremely well funded. All citizens are guaranteed coverage. Those without citizenship or visas are given medical treatment, but are placed on a watch list for illegal immigration. Those who urinate in public are not registered as sex offenders, although sober perpetrators are asked to attend counseling. Education is free for all citizens from birth until death and is compulsory for minors from grade 1 until grade 12 Eluanshi is the largest city in the Empire, but it is not the capital. Jiangcheng is the largest planned city and is the capital Yuanshai does not have a secret police Almost 60% of all Yuanmar are vegetarian or eat meat occasionally. It is considered taboo to eat the meat of a saaren (a dog sized hunting cat) or a thuril crane. Prime Minister Zhou Kaisong has __ children, is married and is Buddhist. He and his family own three saaren cats. The Prime Minister is from House Zhou and in turn belongs to Clan Yenkora, a member of the Red Lotus Faction. Upon election; however, he denounced all titles and political ties. It is perfectly legal to be homeless in Yuanshai and massive charity organisations operate throughout the Empire to aid those afflicted by poverty, disease, disaster and homelessness. The national flower is the orchid. the national animals are the Saaren and Thuril . The national anthem is [yet to be decided] The gini coefficient of Yuanshai is .29. Yuanmar usually live in large estates or compounds (depending on the availability of space). Most citizens use some form of the extensive public transportation system. Racial segregation is illegal in Yuanshai . Yuanshai is not an oil exporter, although it does produce massive amounts of hydroelectric power. Cigarettes have been illegal in Yuanshai for five years now and all former smokers use electronic versions or other devices now. It is believed that roughly 20% of the population has tried marijuana at some point in their lives Yuanshai is a former colony of Siujun Edited by Kelewan, Jul 30 2013, 09:15 AM.

Yuanshai won it's independence in 1814 after a devastating and lengthy war between Imperial forces and ethnically/religiously motivated insurgents. A newly formed Siujunese parliament was unwilling to bear the high costs of keeping Yuanshai and officially conceeded to secession demands in the Treaty of Eluanshi. |
