=History and Society= Few histories are recorded of this group of corporations and factions called the "Native", as they rarely agree upon their collective history as a whole. The last time an attempt was made to collect and record the history of their people, different factions tampered and falsified the records to their favor. Having lead to one of the largest wars in memorable history, the idea of keeping a unified record has since been discarded. This serves as a basic lesson on how "Natives" work as a whole. Every member is fiercely independent and is always looking to improve their own position. Bribes, theft, and cheating are the bread and butter for these people as they seek to climb to the top. Though self-serving, this does not mean they cannot form societies and meaningful alliances; to the contrary, they are able to use this ingrained selfishness to fully trust in their fellow's understanding of mutual benefit. When two Natives would benefit from working together, they work together, and trust the other to continue to uphold their bargain until it no longer works for them. Afterwards, when their agreement has reached a point where no benefit is to be gained or lost, why bother to shoot the other in the back? Society is thus maintained. =Power Structure= Eventually, what is known as the Native Directorate arose to power on the home planet Bernkastel, and colonized it's neighboring two planets. The Third Native Directorate was born after two successful coups and continues to maintain control over the largest minority of Natives within it's influence. Currently, over 35% of Natives support the Directorate, with no other faction (barring one) being even as large as 5%. With their vast wealth and power relative to other Native factions, they are able to effectively control the direction of their empire as a whole, and are recognized as the intra-galactic body of politics for "Natives". The Third Native Directorate uses the majority of it's own resources to build military class vessels and colonize new planets (sometimes engulfing new civilizations). This space fleet is the key to what keeps the 3ND in power. Aside from the Third Native Directorate, or 3ND, Bernkastel also holds another large faction (~15% of Natives), named the Native Grand Sciences. As their name betrays, this is a major faction devoted to research in the name of profit. They develop new technologies for sale, bartering them completely separately from Third Native Directorate decisions regarding intragalactic politics. Seeking to make a profit, they will even sell weapons technology to the 3ND's foes, and this is a topic of great contention. The only reason why the 3ND has not wiped them out yet, is because, of course, the 3ND needs the technologies of the Native Grand Sciences to maintain their strength. With the 3ND a patron of the Native Grand Sciences, this is a striking example of a Native's typical mutually beneficial relationship. The next largest faction would hold 5% of Native's in the Empire, and is a corporation simply named "Best Investment". They hold the majority of the power when making economic decisions and is the economic backer for the 3ND, in exchange for protection. Having been able to position itself to tax research trades done by the Native Grand Sciences in exchange for research loans, they also maintain a positive (or at least beneficial) relationship with that faction as well. =Structure of Society, Flow of Intragalactic Expansion= Regarding the structure of their society, all Natives are technically/legally equal and have all equal rights to protection of their life by whomever is in charge, as long as taxes are paid. Property, however, is not protected by the governing 3ND, unless they are paid to do so through insurance policies. As a side note, the Native Grand Sciences and Best Investment are the largest purchasers of 3ND's reasonable insurance policies. There exists a large "grey area" regarding the use of slaves. While "slavery" in it's basic sense is "illegal", often, Natives will get debtors to sign contracts that relinquish various rights and free wills, and "legal slaves" are born from this. When a new civilization is engulfed by the Native (specifically the 3ND), the new civilization is kept mostly untouched and intact. Research and currency are often sent to the new civilization by the Native Grand Sciences as well as by Best Investment in exchange for rights over discoveries and access to natural resources. If these rights are declined or infringed upon after the contracts are signed, Native Grand Sciences and Best Investment are quick to call in the Third Native Directorate to send in military force as per insurance policy, and often come out with much more profit than that new entry into the Native empire. Natives are remarkably open as a whole to other cultures and people; as long as they can play the game. The strong survive, and the weak perish. If the newest entry into the Native empire falters or slips up (perhaps by taking a loan they cannot pay) often that entire race or faction of people end up becoming "legal slaves". Though, the status is more often than not temporary, as "slave holders" tend to profit more by having a reasonable contract that their "legal slaves" will work towards as opposed to rebel against. |
