Hello Online Occupiers! As requested in the Global Revolution chat, we decided to start holding Online General Assemblies in the chatroom to present new ideas, topics, solutions, and working groups. We need to agree on a time frame...and how often we should have the online GA's. If you could post some of your ideas below that would be great! ~Thank you.

I think this is a great idea. The online community is massive and we can all put our heads together on-line in ways that we can't on-the-ground. We are all an intricate part of the Occupy Movement and can all do something to help in some form or another. I'm in!

My suggestions... - GA's could be held in the general chat room at consistent and regular times and/or there could be 2 chat rooms: 1. a general chat, and 2. a continuous GA chat (with specific meeting times for organized people) - Because of the 24 hour, "rain or shine" nature of the internet, there could be an ongoing GA, held indefinitely, in a chat designated for the purpose of carrying out a structured conversation. Meanwhile, free discussions can be held in the general chat. That way, general conversation, brainstorming and pandamonium would be designated to one chat, while a more organized conversation (or conversations) would be held in a room designated for that purpose. The alternative, as I see it, is to hold GA's in the general chat room, but I see that as a potentially less successful option for obvious reasons. - With that said, I think there should be specific times designated for GA. That way, we can get the most people to come in at one time and everyone can get a feel for the pulse or pulses of the movement each day. - Whatever time frame is decided upon should be kept. - I suggest: Morning GA @ 8 am, Afternoon GA @ 12 pm, Evening GA @ 7 pm, Night GA @ 11:30 pm, Late night GA @ 2 am, and Late late night GA @ 4 am. This would give everyone an opportunity to fit a GA into their schedule and it would help people connect with people who are awake when they are, what have you. - Consistency will help the online GA's feel structured. - Someone should take minutes, who will be taking minutes will be decided at the beginning of each meeting, then minutes will be posted on this board. - Like all forum chat rooms and gatherings, sometimes there will be few people and sometimes there will be many people. The important thing is to keep coming back, whenever you can and making this a "premier" spot for OWS communication so that it can be as effective a forum as possible. In other words, don't let the chat die out. - Keep it fun. But not too fun. Lol, just kidding. tl;dr: - 2 chat rooms: general pandamonium and GA Chat - Ongoing GA chat but with 6 specific meeting times (for more organized people and to fit everyone's schedule and foster friendships) - 8am, 12pm, 7pm, 11:30 pm, 2 am, 4 am - Minutes for each meeting should be posted on the GA board. - KEEP COMING BACK, IT WORKS IF YOU WORK IT! SO WORK IT, YOU'RE WORTH IT! What does everybody think? Edited by occupyliz, Dec 11 2011, 04:53 PM.

I'm trying to process how Liz's suggestions will work. Because people in this movement are scattered around the globe, its a good idea to stagger GA chat times. It gives people in different time zones a chance to participate. However, I'm not sure if Liz is proposing that chats be held daily or not? If so, I forsee being overwhelmed with new ideas or duplicate ideas with the frequency of chats. I think the message board should be given time to digest and debate the minutes from each session. Than build on those discussions in each new chat session. I would like to propose we also stagger the days in between each session. Maybe three days apart? The people putting together the minutes should be given time to edit and post them as well. Let's say a maximum of a day to give people with a lot of notes time to get things together. In other words, 1 day to post and/or 2 to 3 days to debate the issues before the next chat. Does that make sense? We can always make adjustments as we go along. |

AquaBuddha is correct in her concerns over the frequencies of meetings. Locally, at our local democratic meetings... we meet once a month. That's how most committees meet - once a month. (You don't want to burn-out.) During those meetings, you can have guest speakers (we could have on-line guest speakers pre-arranged), talk about ways in which you want to go forward, old business, new business, have the reading of the minutes from the last meeting (go over the minutes for those who may have missed the last meeting or those who want to know - but in this case - minutes could be posted for all to see in the forums). So, you may want to have meetings once a week since it's on-line and not real-life. In between meetings, people need to be brainstorming so that when these meetings occur, we have our ideas to bring to the table every once a week or so, but there do need to be a few set times for meetings. Also, in the mean time, we need to build this site by posting anything and everything occupy. This will spark conversation and draw in people having a base of massive information. Right now, we need to post post post, posting articles - for the US, for different countries, and in the other various forums. We need to share the information that is already out there on the web to help us build on. Even though our actions will be on-line, we still need to build an "on-the-ground" base of information (articles, etc). We are working for those on the ground, supporting them so we need the articles covering what they have doe and are doing. We need to go back over the entire history of Occupy and post every article we can possibly find. This can be a "library" so to speak for us to work off of. When I first joined my local party, it only had a few people, then 12, now 16. So, you know the saying... "build it and they will come". Build the library and set a date for the first meeting(s), and let's try to get a consensus on the date/time -- maybe needing a few meetings on the day chosen for those who work or have errands to run, etc. Let's not wait. Let's get started. I have to go to work today, but when I get home I will start posting articles. I will work vigorously tonight and throughout in posting articles to build the library throughout the forums. I think it would be a good idea for everyone to do that. Also, if anyone sees anything in the wrong place or in a place they think is wrong, let a mod know so they can move it. These are just my ideas. I am only a part of the group. Please let me know if posting and building our library throughout the appropriate areas of the forums is going in the right direction and expound on any of your own ideas. I want to propose that we begin filling up the forums with occupy information and interests of occupy, posting articles, etc, pointing out comments in articles that we want to see action on. We can make this a great source of information for all things occupy when it comes to articles, etc. We can create a library of occupy info, posting anything and everything occupy in addition to the on-line cyber protest actions. Let's make this the "go to" place for massive occupy information. Let's start building!
