Protesters plan to occupy Worth Avenue on Saturday

An international symbol of wealth and exclusivity, Worth Avenue is soon to become the latest backdrop for a national movement protesting the widening gap between the rich and poor.

Occupy Palm Beach County, tied to the national Occupy movement that began on Wall Street, is organizing its members for a protest on the Avenue at noon Saturday.

One of the organizers, Peter Shultz of Hobe Sound, estimated that around 50 protesters will show up to peacefully bring their message of economic injustice to one of the nation’s wealthiest communities.

“We’re going to remind people on Palm Beach island that there are a lot of us who are hurting, and it’s not because we’re bad people or have a moral deficiency,” Shultz said. “The folks I know who aren’t working are having trouble finding a job. People have lost their homes. This is a serious economic situation. People who have a certain more gilded existence may not be aware of it.”

Occupy Palm Beach County is a local outgrowth of the Occupy Wall Street movement that began on Sept. 17 in New York City’s financial district. Participants have protested against social and economic inequality, high unemployment, greed and corruption, what they regard as the undue influence of corporations, and a lack of corporate accountability despite taxpayer bailouts.

Occupy Palm Beach County marchers plan to gather at the old West Palm Beach city hall and be shuttled into town, at the east end of Worth Avenue, by noon.

The Palm Beach County Environmental Coalition, a self-described grassroots group, is circulating an email urging recipients to gather at a location in Lake Worth and bicycle to West Palm Beach to “join Occupy Palm Beach in marching into one of the wealthiest areas in the country.”

“See how the residents of America’s richest community are spending our money,” the email states.

Occupy Palm Beach County has protested peacefully in West Palm Beach, but this marks the first time it has organized a gathering in Palm Beach, Shultz said.

Public Safety Director Kirk Blouin said he’s aware of the group’s plans, and that it is legally allowed to gather on the island without obtaining a town permit.

The protesters are allowed to carry signs and use the sidewalk, but cannot obstruct the sidewalks or the roads, he said. Town law also prohibits the protesters from breaching the peace by yelling or using a loudspeaker.

The group would need a town permit if it were to use the public rights-of-way in a manner that precluded public use, Town Manager Peter Elwell said. But, according to Blouin, the group has not applied for a permit.

Police will monitor the gathering, and would cite any members who violate the law, just as police would do with any other group, he said. But Blouin said he’s not anticipating any problems.

“They’ve been fairly compliant and peaceful in spreading their message in Palm Beach County,” he said.

Shultz described the West Palm Beach gatherings as a “model of civility,” and said that Saturday’s protest in Palm Beach will not be confrontational.

Even so, Occupy Palm Beach County’s activities are being monitored by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Blouin said.

The Palm Beach County Environmental Coalition email was attributed to the group’s co-chair, Panagioti Tsolkas of Lake Worth.

“It will probably be pretty relaxed,” Tsolkas said of Saturday’s event. “It will probably be a good time. It’s open for everyone. I think there will be families and people of all age groups there.”

Comment: $15 million spent on beautification and that will all go down the drain. Go home, take a shower people, and find a job like everyone else is doing. Sitting on Worth with a sign and talking about how bad rich people are is not going to change ANYTHING. Don't you realize you are disrupting businesses and making the situation worse? I feel bad for all the business already affected by this glorified lazy train with a media presence.
