Not sure how many of you Pokemon-minded people are interested in Halo 3, but I sure am so from henceforth, this is the topic for discussion of it. With these fancy new Hide Tags we can post spoilers hidden like this:

SPOILER WARNING:
[hide]Sergeant Johnson gets owned by 343 Guilty Spark, it's hilarious really but quite sad.[/hide]
If anyone's playing Live, my gamertag is Werem1dget. So far I've gotten all the online achievements legitimately, even Two for One which was just a really lucky shot on the perfect gametype (Crazy King on Snowbound). The last online achievement to get is the four kills within four seconds of one another one. It's extremely difficult when there are only 4 other players on the entire map... I have a few more offline achievements to get: Marathon Man, Campaign done on Legendary and a few more of the Meta-Game scores (I got 49,517 on The Covenant when I needed 50,000...)

This here be my Service Record, check out my screenshots.

So... yeah. Discuss away!

Damn, that sucks a lot. My 360's second hand and I don't have a warranty for it or anything, I had been imagining that happening to me. But luckily, my usual luck stayed a fair distance and my 360's still running fine, though the disc got a bit scratched loose in the Collector's Edition tin -_-.

The terminals have a confusing story. I found an explanation on what it all means.

[hide]AUTHOR: SIRSMOKEAL0T

Planet Earth was the last planet to be investigated for sentient life by Librarian (a Forerunner). Upon investigation he did discover sentient life. He indexed them, and in his final hour he quickly constructed a portal to the Ark, and sent them there (Librarian had spent hundreds of years indexing every living being in the universe). After that was done, he buried the portal without any sign that it had ever been there, in order to hide it from the Flood. Finally, he terraformed the Earth, so that when the Flood was gone, and his fellow Forerunners completed the Great Journey (read: repopulating the universe with the indexed lifeforms), they could return to that Eden (as he called it himself). The Forerunners established a defensive line in space against the Flood, Librarian crossed this line when he went on his quest to index everything. The Flood just kept growing, spiraling outward, the most logical thing to do: expanding. Librarian's friend, 'Didact', was concerned about his safety, and kept begging him to come home (Ark), but Librarian remained strong and pursued his near-impossible quest to safe life. Eventually, Didact couldn't stand to remain idle any longer, and went after Librarian with a fleet. Feeling sympathetic for Librarian and his ideals, he sought for a plan to defeat the Flood without firing the Halos, so life would be spared and Librarian's quest could be ended, forcing him to come home. Didact then created an absolute super AI: Mendicant Bias. This AI would assist him greatly in battle against the Flood, the strategy was to lure the Flood masses into battle, while Mendicant Bias, with his super intelligence, would engage a mass of Flood forces, but also coordinate a sneak attack straight at the Flood core: the Gravemind. Unfortunately, this plan could never succeed, as Librarian pointed out the 'thing' would simply retract and muster it's forces, it would do everything for self-preservation. Didact then used this 'retraction behaviour' to buy time, so he could go and retrieve Librarian and take him home. But Mendicant Bias, the AI, betrayed him. He returned with the Flood, and destroyed the waiting rescue party, separating Didact from Librarian. Didact was then forced to retreat. Librarian then witnessed a disturbing behaviour from the Flood; they were no longer spiraling outwards. They were moving in a straight line. Headed for the Maginot Line (Forerunner defensive line), going straight for the Ark. In his betrayal, Mendicant Bias had told the Gravemind of the Forerunner's plans, which would be successful in eradicating the Flood. To counter Mendicant Bias, Didact quickly constructed 'Offensive Bias' to hold him off. [SirSmokeal0t's note: just shows you how amazing the Forerunners were] When the fleet had returned, Librarian remotely blew up their Keyships (ships that were able to gain access to the Ark through distortion of time and space), effectively locking him out from the Ark, but the Flood also. Librarian remained at the terraformed Earth, saying to Didact he had found a nice mountain where he could spend his final seconds, after that he had to stop communicating with Didact as the Flood had found every comm channel, and laughed at him. Begging him to fire the Array (Halos), Didact finally did. And he had to go on the Great Journey without his beloved friend. After the Great Journey, the Forerunners returned to Earth (the planet terraformed by Librarian), and remained there, giving birth to the humans that now populate it. They did not pass on their knowledge to them, because they felt it was their time to 'give in'. They had been an irresistible force in the universe for too long. As Didact said himself: "Nothing in the universe is unstoppable. As long as you push hard enough, everything gives". This no longer applied to the Forerunners, so it was their time to 'go'.[/hide]

Never owned a X Box, but many of my friends have the Halo series.

I read the books, and played through the campaigns of the first two many times.
I read the story of Halo 3 online on Wiki.

I have played a little bit of 3 though at a friends house. Did a couple levels of the main game, and actually did pretty decent on online (is this Shottys and Snipers thing popular?).

I really want to play the story first hand though, sounds really interesting.

I have heard from a few sources that level 8 is basically another library like level from the first halo.

True?

Shagnarok, I added you. Remembered your name by saying it "Shaggin' A Rock".

Did you get Overkill legitimately? If so, how?

Truthiness: The 8th level is similar to The Library in theory, but the actual design is way different. It's a bit of a bitch mainly because of the lack of effective weapons and new 'Turret' Floods, a type of flood that morph between 3 different forms, one of which shoots crap at you and takes a hell of a lot to kill.

Slightly off topic, can anyone help my friend here:

http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs/genmessag...&topic=38991587

He seems to have lost pretty much everything on his profile, more than 8,000 gamerscore.

I played an extremely epic custom game earlier this afternoon. It was 2 Flag CTF on Last Resort, but crates had been placed so that all 8 players and the 2 flags were stuck in a space about fifteen square metres. I got almost as many flag captures (21) as I did beatdowns (22), it was first to 50. I also got about a dozen Double Kills and three triple kills, some guy got a Quintuple kill.

But, more importantly, I just got what amounts to the greatest no-scope I've ever shot. It was in Guardian and I'd just dropped down to get the Sniper Rifle when a guy appeared behind me with the Hammer, so I shot him, he died and I got the Snipe medal. Well I was pretty pleased with that as he was only about a metre away when I shot. But then when I went to watch it in the Theatre, I discovered my shot actually missed, going just under his shoulder, and the ricochet that hit him in the back of the head killed him.

I'll upload a Clip soon, though you can't see it at normal speed. 'Twas epic.

EDIT:It's up. The camera angle used is just to show that it was a ricochet, but for best viewing, I would suggest having the camera over my shoulder and watching at a very slow rate. I promise you won't be disappointed.

We had a school break where my friends brought over an X-Box and we had a Halo marothan. Pretty cool going through the first two games. Man I love Halo 1's campaign.

My friend's X-Box was modded or something (his brother did it) and all the levels were nuts.

Blood Gulch was Star Wars with Lightsabers Blasters and vehicles from that series.
A WWIII one where you could drive planes that dropped bombs.

Lots of stuff like that. Is that a popular deal? Anywhoo seeing as you can sorta change maps around in Halo 3 I can see that being very fun.

Things I'm getting really god-damned fucking sick of in Halo 3 Matchmaking:

- Guardian
- Snowbound
- Slayer on Guardian and Snowbound
- The Hayabusa helmet, so what? You spent fifteen minutes jumping through rings, no-one gives a shit anymore.
- Ridiculous game-destroying lag keeping me from getting Overkill
- 4 Player Lone Wolves matches keeping me from getting Overkill
- The ridiculousness of Overkill, having all other 4 players within reach of you in 16 seconds.
- Overkill
- People yelling, 'VETO!'
- Oddball
- Boosters making the Katana/Security Helmet worthless
- When I dive onto my couch to veto a moment to late and end up playing my 8th match of Slayer on Guardian today
- The fact that the game makes me feel bad for quitting that very same 8th match of Slayer on Guardian today
- The fucking Maulers and how much I hate them when they're used against me
- My lack of a headset to own the people that keep pissing me off in the post-game lobby

It's not the Guardian and Snowbound are bad maps but... if you see my games history, you'll understand how I could come to hate them. I got Slayer on Guardian 4 times in a row.

It's all just luck. You have to be at the right place at the right time. For me it was on the beach stage. In the begining of the match everyone headed for the invisble power-up and I raped with the chain gun.

I was just in the Lone Wolves lobby as I read that. Played Oddball on Snowbound, got really close, a Triple Kill (all with Oddball beatdowns) and then the last guy ARed me as he was jumping towards me and I died.

2nd closest to Overkill behind my Triple Kill with the sword yesterday. I got killed lunging at the last guy. Seriously, he got a Bulltrue. I was pretty annoyed, but at the same time it proved it is possible.

I get so annoyed with 4 player matches like the one I'm about to start, though...

I get killed while recovering from the lunge a lot when I try and go for a triple kill with the sword. Most of the time I just play skirmish. I just hate that guy that is always screaming RUN RUN RUN! WTF ARE YOU DOIN' GO THAT WAY. I COVER 4 U!!!!11 I remember one dude irritated me so much on Isolation I was about to the in the hole with the flag to score. I turned back and tried to kill him but I got shot down by the other team. He failed at getting the flag back so he was just cussing at me the rest of the match. He voice was breaking, it sounded as if he wanted to cry. I didn't mute him because I was cracking up thought. He almost cried because we lost a game of capture the flag.

My name is supposed to be pronounced like ragnarok(shagnarok, you see the resemblance?). Shag n' Rok is ok thought. Mostly everyone on live says it like that.

Yeah, most people I leave unmuted for the lulz. If I had a headset I'd be the prick that got really pissed off easily. I don't go around yelling at people to tell them were to go, I'd be more like, 'THAT'S FUCKIN' BULLSHIT, HAVEN'T YOU HEARD THE MARINE? TANK BEATS EVERYTHING!!!!"

...Ahem

And yeah, I knew what you meant by your name, Shaggin' a rock is easy to remember though :P.

So do you (or anyone else with Halo 3 and Live) have any cool clips/screens? I mostly take screenshots with the intention of using them as my desktop background, so I leave big spaces or icons etc. I think that's pretty apparent from the screens, but some people seem to think I just suck with a camera...

EDIT: Come to think of it I only really get angry with lag. It can be so frustrating.

EDIT: Although in that Team Slayers match (yeah I'm giving Overkill a rest for now) I had so many kill stolen I yelled myself into a headache, and am now retiring to bed.

Halo 3 is awesome. I don't have live yet, but may be getting it in the upcoming months. I've already beat the game on Legendary, and found that every one complaining that it's impossible to do solo are incorrect. Now I need to find all the skulls then do the meta-game acheivments, then solo the campaign with all the skulls on.

And I was upset that Game Informer gave Halo 3 a 9.75 out of ten, but not because of the score, but why. Apparently the lack of bosses is a bad thing, even though everyone complained about bosses being in Halo 2. >_>

The point being that Bungie can't please everyone.

I also have Halo 3. It's cool. Though, I find the game to have been overhyped.

I have one level to do on Legendary and that's the feared Cortana. I also did The Storm (****ing Grunts on Ghosts) and Halo in co-op just because my friend was around. We spent a lot of time pissing around in the AA Wraith (Yes, it can be driven. Awesome glitch/thing they didn't fully take out).

That and I have, I think, 2 Meta-Game achievements left to get: Cortana and The Covenant. By the way, good luck soloing the campaign with all the skulls on, you realise what Mythic does, don't you?

As for the 9.75, it's probably a pretty good score for it, though you're right, the reasoning is stupid. Halo's not perfect for different reasons.

With that big a fanbase and more than a million and a half preorders, it's hard for Halo to not have been overhyped. The reincarnation of Jesus wouldn't be worth the amount of hype Halo 3 had. One thing I foud unfortunate was how misleading the Advertising Campaign was when compared to the Game Campaign. There were none of those huge scale battles beneath darkened skies across blackened rubble littered with the corpses of soldiers; it was just like any previous Halo campaign, colourful and enjoyable.

Did anyone read the books here?

I read them back four years ago or something.....

Good stuff. The Fall of Reach and First Strike are fantastic.

The book actually on the game Halo is terrible. Different author basically writes down an expierience you'd rather play yourself.

I recommend them.

I have the first 3 in a special box set, had to be imported for my birthday (small country ftl). I really really want to read Ghosts of Onyx but that'll have to be imported too which is a pain in the ass.

You're right, The Flood (the game tie-in) was pretty pointless. While The Fall of Reach (my personal favourite), The First Strike, Ghosts of Onyx and I'm pretty sure Contact Harvest (the latest one coming out soonish, all about the first meeting with The Covenant at Harvest, apparently follows Avery Johnson) were written by Eric Nylund, a talented sci-fi author, The Flood was written by William C. Dietz, more of a Fantasy guy. The thing is, Nylund had an easier job because people are going to enjoy reading the story they don't know more than reading about the game they've played, though The Flood did tell about what all the marines were doing on Installation 04. Dietz drew the short straw really, though that's not to say Nylund's not the better man for the job.

I also recommend the books. While The Flood doesn't contribute anything to the storyline that you won't already know, The Fall of Reach gives a LOT of background and I don't know how I ever followed Halo 1 without reading it. It also makes the Master Chief a cooler character and gives an otherwise bland sci-fi storyline unique background. The First Strike is less integral to the story and tells about what MC and Cortana got up to between the first and second games. It was essentially owning a Covenant fleet and some ridiculously cool sniping (with one hand while hanging from a Banshee at full speed.) From what I've heard, The Ghosts of Onyx provides a lot of insight as well.

These books are what make the Halo story not average and why a movie, particularly one featuring some of the other kickass Spartans like Linda and Kelly, would be sweet.

Those of you who haven't seen the live action Arms-Race shorts need to Youtube them now. They are incredibly, incredibly, incredibly cool and show how the Chief made it to Earth in time for Halo 3.

Every single game that got a 10 in GI, it's sequel has a lower score. IIRC, MGS3 got a 9.5, GOW11 got a 9.75, Halo 3 got a 9.75, the Tony Hawk series didn't get 10's (beside PS2 methinks) and we all know what Resident Evil 5 is going to get.

I've read all the books, they're pretty good. I think the reason "The Flood" is not as good as the other's is because everyone already knew the story and played through it, and it's kind of hard to write a story of the gameplay sections. "Ghosts of Onyx", in case anyone doesn't know, takes place before and during Halo 2, and provides a lot of information as to what goes on with all the other SPARTANS. "Contact Harvest" looks to be good, especially since it follows Sgt. Johnson, and it's supposed to be written by one of the Bungie story guys.

And Arms Race had how Chief made it to Earth? I though they were supposed to tell it in the comic, so I had no clue how he went from the ship to crashing in the jungle. *goes to find the videos*
