Warriors of the Past: Chapter One

He sits, staring off into oblivion. Kaien Valiran, a veteran of many wars; recalls the yesterdays of battles past. Of all his friends who had now come and gone, remembering the comrades who fought by his side. Kaien was once one of the most legendary warriors in the land, at present he now lives life in peace. In the land of Shentu.

Kaien? His wife calls, KAIEN?!

"Yes, Larina?"

"Are you alright?" she asked, "You were crying just now, want to talk to me about it?"

Kaien wipes his eyes and sets down the shot-glass he was drinking out of. "Oh its nothing. What is it?"

He had wept, for the one friend he cared for the most, a little boy who came up to him decades ago. The child wanted to learn how to be just like him. His name was Charlie Striker, an orphan who lost his entire family in the brutal Lyran war. The child wanted to be a great warrior like him.

"Hey you! Whats your name?" a small high pitched voice demanded. Kaien had been startled. He fumbled for his pistol but caught glimpse of a child. He was only 10 years old wearing tattered clothes, with nothing on his feet. He was abnormally tall for his age, but had a strange and yet courageous aura about him.

"Who wants to know kid?" Kaien quipped.

"I DO! I DO!" The child shouted as he jumped around on the snow covered ground.

"Beat it kid!" he ordered, Kaien then shoved the boy aside.

He started to walk away. But no sooner did he take his first step had the boy returned, tugging on Kaien's trenchcoat, begging to know his name.

"I told you to beat it kid!!" Kaien yelled.

"I WILL NOT! I wont go until you tell me your name!, NOW NOW NOW!!"

He hated kids. But then Kaien was reminded of himself at this boy's age, so he gave in to the child's request.

Kaien bent over and gazed intently into Charlie's deep blue eyes. "If you really wanna know kid, my name is Kaien, Kaien Valiran." He stood up. "Whats yours?"

"Charlie Striker, sir"

"Mommy told me a lot of stories about you Mister Kaien, about how you beat up twenty men all by yourself! And how you saved the lives of a thousand men with just your knife! I wanna be strong like you! Can you teach me to be strong? Strong so I can protect my friends?

They walked to a nearby stoop and sat.

"I tell you what kid, er Charlie, where is your mother anyways?"

Charlie started to sob. "Shes dead", he replied.

Caught off guard by the child's response, he asked "What about your father?"

"He died too. He went after the men who killed her, he wanted uhh reti--uh rati", he paused trying to search for words, at last giving up. "He wanted to hurt them back for hurting mommy"

Kaien was a killer, a soldier; not a father. He wanted nothing to do with the boy. But then Kaien remembered his own childhood, and what his mother had once told him. "Defend the helpless, give faith to those who are without hope"

He sighed deeply with a scornful look on his face "Alright boy, come on. I will teach you. But I warn you, if you step out of line, I will put you back where I found you."

---That was over 30 years ago.

Kaien smiled and returned himself to the real world.

"There is a young man here to see you" Larina said. "He says he knows you. Someone by the name of Deion Striker."

Kaien's eyes widened

"Striker?! No! It CANT be!" he thought to himself. Deion was Charlie's call-sign back in the war. "Is Charlie still alive?"

By now, Kaien had leapt out of his chair and raced for the door while nearly knocking Larina to the floor, he opened it.

He was staring the spectre of his past face to face.

Warriors of the Past: Chapter Two

Kaien stood there, stunned. It wasn't Charlie, but someone claiming to be his son.

"May I come in sir?" Deion asked

"Uhh, sure young man" Kaien responded

"Are you okay?" "Sir?! Are you okay?!"

Kaien was rattled to the core, Charlie had a son. And he never once spoke of him. They both were too busy fighting the Kataanians to have children.

He snapped out of his trance. "Yes, Im fine boy. Just a little shocked."

"Shocked? About what?" Deion inquired

They walked into the kitchen and sat down, as Larina prepared them dinner.

"Shocked that your father had a son. He never told me about you." Kaien responded.

And then an eerie silence fell between them, Deion looked nervous. He was shaking all over. His food lain untouched. At last, he worked up the courage to reply.

"That is... because I am half Kataanian." His voice quivering

Kaien had to restrain himself. The War Ministry forbade them to fraternize with the enemy, he was enraged that Charlie would disregard those orders; but then again he was impressed the he could keep his son a secret from both him and High Command. What Kaien didnt know was, that the last year Charlie was alive he fell in love with a Kataanian woman, Chira and married her. Deion was born the day Charlie died.

"I see" Kaien sighed.

He decided to share his painful past with Deion

"I was deployed along with your father when the Kataanian war broke out twenty years ago. Our orders were to kill. We as men were not allowed to fall in love and have any children." he paused for thought, "But as you can see young man, when you win your battles; the rewards are beyond compare." Kaien said while flagging Larina down and kissing her.

He had long since retired from the fighting profession, and was approaching middle age. But he still longed to pass on his skills to someone. He wanted to pass on his knowledge; and Deion, although he was half Katannian, would love to see and learn from the man his Father, Charlie fought with. Deion however, didnt seem to be interested in that now.

Kaien continued. "Your father walked up to me when I was in my twenties, he was barely ten years of age and he had just lost his parents, he told me the tragedy that befell them and pleaded with me to teach him the Shentu fighting style. It took 20 years but, he learned. He was almost as good as I was before he died, but on the day we were celebrating our supposed victory in the war like fools, the Kataanians decided to strike one last time."

He stopped, he could not bear to tell the rest of the story. His eyes were welling up with tears and his stomach was tied in knots. "He was like a son to me."

Deion could tell it was painful for him. Larina had already sat down with them to eat, but she listened in, and was in tears also. Nobody ate a bite.

Later that night as Kaien laid in bed, he recalled the day Charlie died; the part he couldnt tell Deion.

The Shentu/Kataanian war was believed to be over, and the Shentu War Ministry was recalling its forces in victory. He and Charlie both had fought hard and long during the war. Ceremonies ensued, promotions were given out and speeches were given by long winded dignetaries. Joy was plentiful, Kaien himself had just fallen in love with Larina that day. And Charlie couldn't wait to go home. Then the Kataanians struck from the hills around the palace. Kaien, Charlie, and Larina all ran, evading gunfire and laser fire. Charlie, or Deion as he was known to his platoon, was called away to help protect the King along with his squad. What Kaien heard on his communicator next, scarred him for the rest of his life:

In pain and breathing heavily, Charlie said, "Sorry Kai, my teacher, I won, and then I lost. The King is safe, Shentu can live in peace now."

Kaien rushed to Charlie's side and held his wounded body in his arms. "The King got away Kai, I stayed behind to make sure he was safe."

Charlie had covered a grenade with his body, the armor protected everything from the explosion except the area where his heart was.

With the last few breaths of life Charlie struggled to say, "If a boy comes to you one day and wants to be a warrior, think of what you did for me, Kai... I will always be by your side." And with that his body went limp and he died.

Kaien let out a gutteral scream of rage and disgust... NO!!! CHARLIE NO!!!!!! CHARLIE?! with tears streaming down his face Kaien exclaimed: "I WILL AVENGE YOU! I WILL MAKE THE KATAANIANS PAY FOR WHAT THEY HAVE DONE!!"

Kaien was awake the entire night. The screen on the computer terminal next to the bed was flashing, there was a communique from Charlies widow, Chira.

And it read:

Dear Kaien, My name is Chira. You might not know me, but my husband Charlie fought with you years ago during the war. Deion is my son, I gave birth to him on the day the Kataanians made an attempt on the king's life and when Charlie died. Charlie spoke highly of you and he told me of when he was young about how you taught him so many things. Please dont hate me for being Kataanian, I know Charlie violated a direct order, but; we both wanted the war to end peacefully, we wanted to live in peace with our son. But when he sacrificed himself that day those hopes vanished. I beg you, take Deion under your wing, teach him to be the great man and warrior that my husband was.

-Chira Striker

Kaien had no choice, he went to the place where Chira and Deion lived. He went inside, there, Chira and Deion were; staring at pictures they took together with Charlie.

And then without warning, Kaien spoke. "Charlie would be proud of you Chira, I know I would be." She looked up to him with joy in her eyes and smiled. Kaien then laid his hand on Deion's shoulder. "I will teach him, Chira, he will be one of the greatest and most respected warriors in the land of Shentu."

Deion stood and hugged Kaien, and started asking him a thousand questions. Chira then said, "Go on, I will be here, I have faith in you two."

And with Chira's blessing, they both walked out of the past and into the future.

Warriors of the Past: Chapter Three

They arrived at Kaien's home, Deion didnt realize it before, but this city; this place looked familiar.

"Kaien, sir, is this not the old Lyran province?" Deion asked.

Kaien replied, "Yes boy this is, I came here after I completed my basic training, it was just down the street from here thirty years ago that I met your father."

Every week on this day since Charlie died, Kaien would place flowers at the place where he first met him, so Deion watched as Larina handed Kaien a bouquet of flowers and he walked to the old Lyran provincial building and laid the bouquet down.

Larina saw Deion standing there waiting for Kaien to return. She came outside. "He is so kind and gentle when he wants to be". She said.

Deion turned around and asked Larina, "Ma'am, does he do this everyday for dad?"

Larina responded "Yes child, he has done that for Charlie every week on the day since before we married." she continued "It isn't easy for him, he relives that day over and over as he walks to that building"

Larina's eyes began to tear up "No other man I know has to live with what he lives with everyday."

Deion chose not to pursue the subject any further.

Kaien returned, his eyes seemed more focused now, his strides were that of a man marching into battle. And he stared down at Deion. "Are you ready to learn boy?"

Deion replied, "I dont know, Im real nervous"

Kaien stood there for a moment, contemplating a response.

Deion shrieked "HEY PUT ME DOWN, PUT ME DOWN!! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!"

Kaien had jerked Deion clean off of his feet. He could see the immense fear in Deion's eyes. "If you are going to learn from me boy, you must posess nothing but your confidence, if you make any mistakes you will die like those of whom have failed to train with me in the past!" "DO YOU UNDERSTAND ME BOY?!"

Deion understood the way Shentu soldiers trained, they didnt use fake weapons or decoys, they used each other. Only the best of the best made it through training alive.

"I...I do, sir." He swallowed hard as Kaien placed him back on his feet. Deion looked back at Larina, who seemed to have been startled by the sudden display of agresssion by Kaien.

But she knew to stay silent, this is how he was trained back in the war, this is how he would pass on his knowlege to Deion, she remembered Kaien saying once to her "Dominate your enemy or be dominated by him."

Things were quiet as the two walked through the door and into a large room with a kitchen and what resembled a bar to the left and a row of beds to the right.. Deion thought to himself "Whoa, he must have been born in royalty to afford a home like this." Although he had been there just the day before.

In fact this had been the Mansion that Kaien's father had given his mother right before she fled the first Kataanian war.

The two walked up a spiral staircase and into a room lined with suits of armor and weapons from the ancient Shentu Empire. "This is where we will begin your training, Deion."

Deion was at a loss for words

Kaien uttered, "This is where you will live.. or where you will die. Pay attention."

He pulled out a beat up set of body armor, "HERE, put this on.", "This is what Charlie trained in when he was your age" He also gave him a knife, and tossed him a laser pistol.

Deion put on the armor, he felt a sudden surge of power rush through him, like he had been given the strength of many men. Kaien however wore nothing but his clothes along with his trench-coat and his knife. "How can he fight me like that?" "Is he crazy?" Deion thought as Kaien stood there. No sooner had the thought crossed his mind, before he could even reach any of his weapons, Deion found himself flying through the air, He landed hard, knocking the breath right out of him. While laying on the floor, he tried to recall what had just happened.

"How can he move so fast? This man is pushing fifty! He cant be human!" He thought to himself with a confused look on his face. Kaien knew this would happen and so he explained. "A fully trained Shentu warrior must posess speed faster than the wind itself."

"GET UP! COWARD!!" Kaien demanded.

And so he did, but this time he had his eyes locked on Kaien. Kaien's eyes were that of a killer, a man who would show no mercy... not even to him.

His eyes flashed with a bright white light, Deion tried to brace himself and once again he found himself lying on the ground.

"COME ON DEION, EVEN THE SHENTU CADETS CAN BLOCK THIS ATTACK!" Kaien quipped

He got up one last time, he was ready for for him. FLASH! Kaien was on top of him, but he wasnt lying on the ground this time, he had somehow blocked Kaien's attack and had knocked him clean across the room. And as soon as it had begun it was over, Kaien got up with a gentle look in his eyes and said "Im impressed, Deion it took me five times to block that attack and counter it the way you did. It only took you three" "Come let us go eat and rest, we have much to discuss"

Deion was exhausted, they had trained for what seemed like days, when in fact it had only been just a matter of hours.

He had been caught off kilter by the sudden change in Kaien's mood. Not just hours ago he was paying his respects to a fallen comrade, and then he became a Shentu Warrior again, ready to fight and train... or kill if necessary. And now he was the same man who accepted Chira's request to train him, the man that had come to his home and given joy to her when she had none.

He thought to himself as he sat down to eat, "I must show him that Im just as good as Charlie was." Kaien glanced at him from across the room as if he heard his thoughts.

Mental discipline was another trait Shentu warriors were trained to posess.

Kaien spoke, "You will be, Deion, You will be."

Warriors of the Past: Chapter Four

Deion was amazed. He read so much about many Shentu legends of the past, including Kaien; but never did he read of any of them posessing the ability to read minds.

Deion nearly choked, "Uh...how did you-"

Kaien interrupted "Read your mind?", "I didnt, I read the aura from your body. It conveyed to me your desires."

"Who taught you?", Deion asked Kaien. He knew that nobody at the Academy would have taught things like this to soldiers.

He looked at Deion, but didnt answer.

Kaien then got up and made his way to the training room, "If your done boy, I have something to show you."

He thanked Larina for the meal, and followed Kaien into the training room.

When Deion arrived he saw Kaien sitting on the floor, his knife and his pistol splayed out in front of him. "Over there." he gestured.

Sitting there, in the far corner of the room, was a stack of books and papers.

"Those were Charlie's, they are the notes and observations he took of me while I trained him. Take them and study."

He opened one of the books and started reading

9th day, 7th month, year 2370. Charlie Striker:

I'm just a kid and he treats me like a slave. I thought he was going to train me, but he makes me do chores. He makes me run miles and miles but he has taught me no fighting. Mom and Dad never treated me like this.

10th day 7th month, year 2370. Charlie Striker:

I tried to run away from Kaien, I thought I was free... I looked back and saw him smiling at me, when I turned around again I felt a rush of wind next to me and he was standing in front of me. He took me back. I wont run away anymore.

By now Kaien had fallen asleep on the floor, so he continued to read.

20th Day, 2nd Month, Year 2381, Petty Officer Charlie "Deion" Striker:

Today was my first day as a Shentu soldier, we drove away some Lyran terrorists left over from the war 10 years ago from the Kudhere Mountains, just 18 miles northwest of the Palace. This is a disturbing trend, its like they are scouting us or something; the Kataanians are behind this, and The King has declared war against them for the second time in his reign. My superiors say my fighting skill reminds them of someone, but they didn't bother to tell me who it was.

30th Day, 12th Month, Year 2388, Sub Commander "Deion" Charlie Striker:

Me and Kaien have fought together for seven years now. The soldiers and Kaien gave me my call-sign, "Deion", after one of my buddies called me that last month. Victory is near, all we have to do is kill the Kataanian leader. Its going to be tough, and Kaien has chosen me to help lead final assault on their homeland. We are like brothers, I have learned so much from him over the past twenty years. Now it will all come down to this battle. General Kaien, I will not let you down.

2nd Day, 2nd Month, Year 2389, Sub Commander "Deion" Charlie Striker:

We met minimal resistance from the people, in some cases they even helped us. We found the leader holed up with 7000 men in a large complex buried in the outskirts of the city. The battle didnt last long. Me and Kaien plowed through them like they were blades of grass! We annihilated him and his army. Kaien dealt the final blow. Some of the people have begged us to become Shentu Emperial Citizens, so we took them in as refugees. There is this woman, Chira. I am deeply in love with her, I have been for months now. But I am not allowed to marry her since she is Kataanian, so I will take her as my wife in secret. Not even Kaien or High Command will know, this war will not keep us apart.

8th Day 2nd Month, Year 2389 Sub Commander "Deion" Charlie Striker:

We are back at our barracks, celebrating our victory over our enemy, and in about ten months time from now the rest of our forces will sweep the last of the Kataanian stragglers away. We have won. I will travel in secret back to Kataania to marry Chira. Any other time and I will be caught. I look forward to seeing her sweet brown eyes again.

Deion flipped to the last few pages of Charlie's journal. "This is what it was like to fight for the Shentu. Isnt it Kaien?"

Kaien, aroused from his sleep answered, "And die for them and you will be writing a journal like that one if you make it with me, and in the Academy."

30th Day, 12th Month, Year 2389 Sub Commander "Deion" Charlie Striker:

The war is over! The Kataanians surrendered to us and signed the treaty a few nights ago. I met a man who claims to be Kaiens father, who happens to be the War Minister in the palace; he asked me if I knew Kaien, I told him I did. I said that I have been alongside with him seven years. He told me to tell him that if he ever needed some advice, to seek him out. I also recieved some joyful news, Chira who is with child, is in labor, I will travel to Kataania so I can witness the birth of my son Deion, after the ceremonies tomorrow.

31st Day, 12th Month, Year 2389 Sub Commander "Deion" Charlie Striker:

Today is a day of celebration! I am to be promoted to Commander. Kaien has said how proud he is of me. He has also fallen in love with a Shentu woman, her name is Larina and she is just like Chira, a picture of beauty. But I have to guard the King during the ceremony so I wont be able to stand with Kaien to celebrate. Not yet anyways. My son will be born at anytime today so I hope he will appreciate the sacrifices me and Kaien have made during this war, when he grows up of course. This war is not over though, and these fools will be celebrating a premature victory. This will be my last entry in this journal. Deion, may this book find your hands one day when you are older, so that you can experience the life of a Shentu warrior.

Deion closed the book. "I cant believe this, what amazing foresight he had."," Is he saying that this war isn't over?"

He wanted to ask Kaien about his father, but he thought against it.

Kaien replied, "Not by a long shot boy, there is news that the Kataanians and the new Lyran Kingdom have allied themselves again, and that they are planning another invasion."

It all became clear to Deion, Kaien was training him to be his successor. And now it was up to him to be ready if there were to be another invasion.

Warriors of the Past: Chapter Five

"Indeed another invasion is nigh", Lirana spoke as she brought some refreshments to them. She stood there for quite some time wondering how Deion would react to reading Charlie's journal. More importantly she was a bit nervous about how Kaien would take it.

"I don't mean to be the harbinger of bad news, Kaien" she added

"Exactly WHERE did you hear this, Larina?"

She replied, "I will show you where, Kaien. Follow me. You too, Deion."

So they raced outside behind the mansion where there were nothing but hills and trees, she pointed out into the distance, columns of smoke were rising from the Maleron mountains to the east, a considerable distance from where the mansion was, but right in line with the Shentu Capital.

"Those naive buffoons decided to launch an ambush, did they?" Kaien scoffed. He then turned to Deion, "It will take them a considerable time to reach the capital, come, let us train hard. You are learning well, boy. By the time they get to the gates you will be a warrior though, a force to be reckoned with. They will be no match for you."

It had been nearly a week since Kaien took him under his wing, and he was learning at a quicker pace than Kaien could ever hope for.

Back in the training room, Deion was matching his Shentu Quickstride technique against Kaien's. Lirana decided she would take a break from her duties as a housewife and watch the two hash it out. Kaien was fighting at a lower level...on purpose, she could tell by the pleasant smile on his face. Deion on the other hand, was giving everything he had; although it took a lesser amount of effort each time, Deion was getting more proficient. So proficient in fact that Kaien had to adjust his fighting skill to match.

Kaien thought to himself as he was sparring with Deion,"He has matched Charlie's skill level in less than a week.. this is impossible!"

Then it happened unexpectedly, the moment Kaien had trained Deion so hard to achieve. The moment where Deion would defeat him in a sparring match and become his successor. Deion's eyes flashed a bright green, his movements were that of a gust of wind, a flowing river; his technique, perfect. He had Kaien pinned to the floor with his knife pressed against his neck.

"I win. Surrender or die here, Kaien." Deion exclaimed in a deep thunderous voice. He had been possessed by the spirit of his father, Charlie.

He was shocked..his heart was pounding. He caught a glimpse of his aura, right before Deion made his move.

"I can hear his thoughts, I can see him fighting you!" Deion shouted.

"Your father... Deion, your father was here." Kaien said in disbelief

"What has he done to me?? I feel like I could sweep thorugh an entire legion of men! My mind..my mind is coarsing with strategy and techniques...its like he has melded his soul with mine. THIS IS INCREDIBLE!!"

"He has. Kaien explained. "The life of a Shentu warrior lasts long after death. What he did was release his essence the moment he died.", "His essence then flowed and melded with yours the instant you were born and took your first breath of life." He went on, "The soul of a Shentu warrior will even fight death itself."

Deions eyes were more focused now, then it hit him. "Fight me for real, Kai." Deion demanded, he knew full well Kaien didnt use his full strength to fight him. And he knew calling him by that name would make him angry.

"What did you just call me?!" Kaien raged. The floor began to shake, Kaien ignored Larina's pleas to calm down. He taunted Deion, "You have the nerves to call me that name, and you accuse me of not using my full power? Come and try to defeat me, Deion, you puny child!"

FLASH! A sphere of light enveloped them, green and white lights began smashing and evading one another. Kaien wasn't angry, he just wanted to see if what Deion did before would happen again. And it did.

Before Kaien knew it, he was pinned again. Deions knife pressing against his gut, Kaiens pistol aimed at Deion's forehead. It was a stalemate. Not once in his life has one of his opponents forced him to a draw.

Deion collapsed to the floor. This fight had gone on for only a few minutes. Even Kaien was exhausted. Larina had been sitting there watching, she stood up, and said, "Looks like you have met your match, Kaien."

"Looks like I found the right man." Kaien sighed and smiled. "I have a successor, a man who will fight alongside with me in this war to end all wars."

"But now you must convince your father that he has the only two men he will ever need." Larina pointed out.

"Yes indeed, my wife. If he still lives. I have not spoken to him since that night forty years ago."

He went to his bedroom and laid down with Larina, and went to sleep. As Kaien slept he dreamt back to that fateful night with his father. He tossed an turned.

"WE MUST GET OUT OF HERE KAIEN! Ceiran will not wait for us any longer!" She screamed. His mother cradled him in her arms and ran as fast as she could, hiding him from the Kataanian and Lyran extermination squads, who wanted to kill all of the Shentu children. Finally they arrived. Dad? Kaien cried out, DAD WHERE ARE YOU?! His mother picked up a crumpled piece of paper in the seat of his airship. It was from him.

And it read:

Rentira, I love you dearly, and I am sorry I cannot be with you now. I have been summoned away by the king, his forces are under seige at the palace. If you find this note, take this airship and flee to Lyran, I have friends there that will keep you safe until the war is over. Please forgive me Kaien my boy, I regret not being able to train you like wanted me to. When this war is over I promise I will find you two and make this right again.

"Mommy? Is Dad coming back? Will he teach me like he promised?"

"I dont know Kaien, sweet child" She cried.

They got into the airship and fled, Kaien looked behind as the building they had just left exploded.

Kaien then shouted in his sleep, "FAAATHERR!!!" Kaien immediately sat up in bed with tears in his eyes, Larina looked at him and said, "Its going to be okay, Im sure your mother would be proud of you for what are doing." while she hugged him.

"Now get some rest, you have a big day ahead of you." as she kissed him.

"Yes...she will be proud of me... she will be proud of me.." And he drifted off to sleep once more.

Warriors of the Past: Chapter Six

Deion meanwhile was exhausted from his battle with his master, he was perplexed that his the spirit of his father knew when to bond with him. He shuddered "Whoa, note to self, do not refer to him by his call sign."

He sat down on his bed and picked up his fathers journal.

"I never really got to meet you in person, dad. I long to see you just one more time."

A voice erupted deep within his being, "Id hope you would want to see me more than that, son. When I bonded with you, I was reborn in you."

Deion was shivering "Dad? Is that you? Where are you?"

"Yes, Its me, your father, I now reside within your very soul. Dont be afraid. And yes I am here to stay." Charlie explained.

"You saved my rear in there." he said "I thought I was going to die when I called him by his call-sign."

The spirit of Charlie let out belly laugh, "No, son he was pulling you. He knows Im here he just wanted to see if I had gotten rusty."

"YOU?! WHAT ABOUT ME?! I NEARLY DIED IN THERE!" Deion yelled

Charlie continued to laugh, "OH MAN HE GOT YOU GOOD! YOURE KILLING ME!! WAHAHAHAAAA!!"

Deion didn't see anything funny about it, "Youre already dead, how can I be killing you?" with a hint of sarcasm in his voice. It made Charlie laugh even harder "My son has a sense of humor! I love it!"

He stopped, "But seriously son, I came to you when I sensed a disruption in the peace of the land, AND when Kaien was about to wipe the floor with you." I came to see you through your journey as a Shentu Warrior."

Deion scoffed "I had it well under control Dad. I didn't need your help."

"Sure you did son, you need me and I need you. If you want to survive in the world that Kai fought in, you had better get rid of that cocky attitude. It will be the death of you. When I was training with Kai, I had the gall to hit off of his girl once, he taught me a few things about respect. I thought he was really mad, and he was a little bit, but he had a smirk on his face, he knew if I was going talk trash, I should be able to back it up. Not there, though, so I wisely chose not to say anything else about her. You had better watch your tongue around him, Deion."

If there was one thing Kaien didnt like, it was cocky brats with an ego. And as far as Deion knew, he was a bit overconfident with him in the training room.

Suddenly, Charlie's figure began to fade. "I must go son, remember I will always be here to aid you, so call on me when you need me the most."

And he was gone. He now knew what his father looked like , he could tell Chira that he met him again. He then drifted off to sleep, satisfied that his father will be with him for all time.

The next morning came. Kaien had his things packed, and Deion was still in bed. Larina called to him, "Hes going to leave you here if you dont hurry, child!"

"OH NO! Its later than I thought! Hes going to kill me this time." Deion thought to himself

"He hates to be kept waiting boy, get a move on!" Kaien ordered

Deion rushed through his breakfast and packed his things, today was the biggest day of his life and he was on the verge of making a fool of himself in front of Kai and one of the most prominent men in Shentu, the War Minister himself, Ceiran.

The trip was long, the sun was hot and unrelenting, but the look on Kaiens face said it all. He didnt want to be there, he didnt want to see his father.

"Why do you hate your father so much, Master?" Deion asked

He turned around and answered. "Because he made my mother cry, he left us behind because of this stupid war and said he would come back. He didnt, he is a liar and a fraud. He is, however the War Minister, and he is also the foundation of this empire; and for that reason alone we must seek his counsel. Now be silent, boy."

Kaien recalled what his mother said the months after they left their home "Do not hate him for what he did, he is a patriot of this empire, when the king says fight, he fights. He does to keep us and Shentu safe."

Ceiran was an extremely loyal man, he did anything and everything the king requested when it pertained to war.

We are here, Deion, "WAKE UP BOY, YOU EMBARRASS ME!"

And so they were. the palace was a huge fortress, there were many hallways leading to many different areas. There were thousands of people going in and out, there were airships flying every which way in the yellowish sky, in their patrol formations. Then he saw them, not far from he was, the next batch of Shentu warriors performing their drills, the quick steps, the knife skills; all the techniques that Kaien had taught him.

He now knew how much of an impact he had on this land, the very techniques he saw those soldiers performing, were those of Kaien. Their eyes flashed all sorts of colors, from red to purple to orange.

Kaien put his hand on his shoulder and pointed to them. "This is what you are up against, Deion, I have full confidence in you. My father will think highly of you when he sees what I have molded you into."

"Kaien! You have some nerve showing up here. You might be my son but you are still a chauvinistic little boy." a voice ushered out from the communicator. It was Ceiran, and by the sound of it, he didnt want him there.

He laughed, "Forty years and you are as prideful as ever, Father. If you want a great warrior, I have one here. His name is Deion, he's half Kataaninan, and he is capable of fighting hand to hand with your best men. I assure you."

"Kataanian you say? It is only his Shentu blood that keeps me from sending a few of my men out to kill him on the spot. But I shall give him a chance, however."

Kaien turned to Deion and spoke, "My father is overly arrogant, although he is and will be as good of a teacher to you as I have been. Now go to him to be observed."

"Dad, I need your strength now, I need your power, your knowlege, for I am about to embark on my journey as a warrior." Deion said to himself.

He walked into the palace, and came face to face with Ceiran... and his destiny.

Warriors of the Past: Chapter Eight

There Deion was standing face to face with Ceiran. He was immensely nervous. "Deion is it? Well I am going to make my son regret bringing you to me. You are garbage, you are half Kataanian. I spent years training my men to kill people like you."

Deion stood there with his eyes wide shocked, he didnt know how to respond. One of the most prominent men in Shentu had just insulted him. He insulted his mother, and for that matter his dead father.

"There is a war brewing, Deion. You are wasting my time."

Deion finally spoke, "But you promised Kai-"

"I PROMISED HIM NOTHING, CHILD!" Ceiran interrupted

"Just because Kaien brought you here doesnt mean you can dispense with our rules. You think this will be easy, well then I will show you just how wrong you are. You will be broken in a matter of days."

"JUST YOU TRY IT!" Deion blurted

Deion had enough of his overly contentious attitude, he wanted to show him he was serious. He was confident that Kaien had trained him well.

"SO BE IT. Either you succeed or you die. I could care less what happens to you."

A wave of confidence suddenly came over Deion "You dont need to train me, I will show you now that I am worthy."

"Oh really, son? If I were to get one of my best men to fight you, do you think you could defeat him? I will love watching you fail." Ceiran laughed

"Yes, I do. You insult me, you degrade me but you dont give me a chance to prove my worth, so bring one of your best men out. I shall meet him on the training grounds where I will defeat him with a single blow."

"As you wish, I will break you of your overconfidence." He then clicked his communicator "GUARDS! Bring the leader of Ten Squad squad to me, I have a test for him."

"Ohh man, what have I done?? What did I just say?! I'm going to die..." Deion thought to himself

Deion then caught a glimpse of a figure standing next to him.

"FATHER!!"

"Not if I have anything to say about it." It was the spirit of Charlie. "Let me take over your body, let me move you as I would, let me show you how I fought. Watch and learn."

"Your dead father cannot save you now, I know he is in your soul, no matter, you will BOTH fail."

Ceiran's communicator crackled "He is here sir. He awaits your instruction."

"BRING HIM IN!"

The doors opened, in walked a colossus of a man, his name was Nohn, his muscles bulging and his eyes glowing like the sun. His gaze tore right through Deion. "Sir, is this my test?" He asked. He was wearing the garb of a fully trained, combat ready Shentu warrior, an elite by the armor he wore and the weapons he brandished.

"Yes, Nohn, this is your test, show him how much he has underestimated your skills. He thinks he can defeat you with one blow!. GO! Take him to the training grounds."

His laughter reverberated off of the concrete walls, "I shall disfigure you. I will show you how real Shentu warriors fight, you will wish you had never been born! PREPARE TO BE DEFEATED!

They arrived at the training grounds.

"DO NOT KILL HIM", Ceiran ordered on the communicator. "I may not like my son, but you will answer to him if he dies. UNDERSTAND?"

"WAIT!! Am I not allowed to be armed and protected?" Deion protested.

"You say you can defeat him in one blow, prove it. You do not need weapons or armor." Ceiran responded

"NOHN! ATTACK!" he ordered again

Nohn started in his direction. FLASH! He disappeared just like Kaien did, and just like he did that day, he saw his footsteps, he could read his aura, he knew instantly what he was about to do. Nohn pulled his knife and he swung down with all his might, but the knife stopped, Deion barely moved. With one hand Deion had blocked his attack, then, before he knew it; his fist landed a crippling blow, and was buried in Nohn's gut. He fell to the ground drawn over in pain.

It all happened in an instant. Nohn was on the ground, unconscious. Deion shouted in unison with Charlie, "It is you who have underestimated MY skills. Enlist me, and I will fight for you and lay waste to our enemies."

"Remember what you did here today, son, duplicate it practice it. Many battles with your enemies will start in this way, this is the key to quickly dispatch them. Charlie explained.

"Until we meet again, my son." Then he vanished into thin air.

Ceiran crossed his arms, "Perhaps I have misjudged you and your father, perhaps I was a little too overconfident myself. I still dont like you, just because you are half Kataanian. However, you have my blessing, and my trust. You can tell Kaien that you are a Warrior of this empire, and he can join you if he wishes; we need all the best warriors to fight for us no matter where they come from."

What Deion wasn't aware of was that Kaien had seen the whole affair.

DEION! Kaien yelled "YOU DO ME PROUD BOY!!"

He then ran to meet Kaien, "If Charlie hadnt of showed when he did, I would have been pummeled!"

"Yes, your father says I am a full fledged member of the Shentu warrior caste now. We are now able to assist this empire as needed, together."

"Charlie saved my hind-parts many times. Im glad he is with you now, he can teach you things that even I cannot." Kaien chuckled

Strange things started to occur, the men that were sparring against each other stopped, and they stood staring off in to the distance

The ground started to shake and the sky blackened, the cadets and the warriors on the training grounds vanished they had joined battle with the Kataaninans, who were standing at the base of the mountains surrounding the palace, they had arrived along with their allies, the Lyrans.

"So now it begins", Kaien said. "Come Deion, we shall make them regret setting foot here."

And so they both vanished, streaking towards the battlefield, their eyes glowing. The third Shentu-Kataanian war had begun.

Warriors of the Past: Chapter Eight

DON'T HOLD BACK!!" Kaien yelled.

FLASH! The Kataanians and the Lyrans didn't stand a chance. Kaien was shooting his pistol from afar and Deion was appearing and disappearing at will laying waste to whomever he laid eyes on. One after the other the enemy grew smaller and smaller, no man could touch them. Kaien was just standing in place repelling one attacker after another, fighting tirelessly, it was as if he had never quit fighting.

"This was too easy Kaien. Only a thousand men? Why would they send so few against us?" Deion asked

Indeed it was too easy, Kaien remembered how the last invasion started. He knew this fight wasn't over

"They are toying with us… they wanted to gauge our strengths and our weaknesses. Scout the area, take a couple of men with you."

"As you wish, Kaien."

Deion quickly streaked around the mountainside and stopped, Kaien was right, the Kataanians had a massive force hidden behind the mountainside ready to strike at a moments notice.

"Kaien sir, they have a large contingent of men on the other side, I suggest we retreat for now. It would be suicide to engage them!"

This was like old times for Kaien, the anticipation, the strategy the thrill of battle. "I agree boy, let us place a jamming device here so they cannot communicate with one another. And then we shall retreat back to the palace and inform my father of these developments."

When they arrived at the palace, Ceiran was going over strategy with Nohn and others from the Ten Guardian Batallion as well as the King himself

Are you still in pain from your defeat, Nohn? Deion snorted. "If you wish we can spar later. You may learn a thing or two." He said smiling.

Nohn couldnt believe his eyes, it was the legendary Kaien Valiran, former General of the The Ten Guardian Batallion. He stared in awe. He never thought once that Kaien would return to defend the kingdom.

"Honorable Kaien, had I known that boy was your student, I would never have challenged him."

"And you would have never met the future general of your batallion, either. Kaien quipped. "The fact he defeated you in one blow, shows me how weak the corps has become."

Kaien had a smirk on his face. He was extremely pleased with how Deion had fought in the skirmish a few hours ago. "Hey father? Ceiran turned and faced him,"You still think Deion is garbage?" Kaien asked.

"He is half Kataanian, I despise him. He may be your student, but he will still be a garbage half breed in my eyes."

Kaien stepped closer to Ceiran, "How dare you father? You never had faith in me when I was young, and you will never have any in this boy. He saved YOUR army from being annihlated! It was YOUR incompetence that allowed them to sneak up on us like that, your blindness will kill us all."

The King was sitting on his throne, he had overheard the conversation between Kaien and his father. "YOU TWO, come before me."

"Yes your highness. What is it you wish of us?" Ceiran asked.

"I wish it that you two would think in unison, see eye to eye. I will have no more of this quarreling between you. I need men who will give my empire the best chance to survive. I do not need discord. Ceiran, I will not tolerate any more failures like this one again. You will also show respect to ALL of my people. That includes the half Kataanian boy."

'BUT SIRE-"

"I mean it Ceiran, you will do well to do as you are told, or you shall be held for insubordination."

"I dont…"

Teiron fired an intense look his way and then looked towards the armed guards standing to the left and right side of him.

"Yes, mi-lord."

Ceiran walked away disgusted, he had been upstaged by his own son. Again. Not only did he and the half-Kataanian boy outdo his hand picked scouts earlier, but now he has Teiron on his side. Kaien winked at him as he passed by. Ceiran fought the urge to dress him down with the king in earshot.

"I am still your father, Kai, you will show me proper respect."

"Depends" said Kaien "Whether you respect me in turn and you drop your racist attitudes toward Deion. Did you forget that his father saved Teiron's life that day? Now I suggest you drop this before you really make Teiron more displeased than he already is with you. Good day, Father."

He walked over to where King Teiron was, when he saw him coming he spoke,

"Kaien, you have trained that boy well. He all but saved my kingdom today, with your help of course. And how could I not forget you? You were one of the greatest fighters I have ever known."

"I appreciate the compliments, Lord Teiron, but I am not the only man teaching him now, I hope you noticed."

"I most certainly did my boy, that man made the ultimate sacrifice to keep me alive. I am glad I chose him to serve as one of my Elite Guards that day, However I wish to speak with your prized pupil. Please excuse me."

"Of course my leige."

The king was a kind hearted man, he was there when Charlie stalled the Kataanians that day so he could escape. "Deion! Come here young one, I wish to see the son of the man who saved my life."

His knees nearly gave way, he was being summoned by King Teiron himself.

"Why do you tremble before me boy?" King Teiron asked "Only my enemies should tremble in fear as you do."

"I am half Kataanian, my leige. I cannot help but think that I am the epitome of all you have fought against."

Teiron looked upon Deion with compassion and pity "You could not help it, son. It was impossible for me rule over the emotions of my men and the women they so deeply cared for.. Your father was no exception."

"Come with me. He asked. "I have something for you, your father wished you to have this when you became old enough."

Deion followed him into his inner sanctum. The room was enormous. A double staircase led up to two rows of rooms. There was something in the middle of the room that resembled a memorial. "I kept this here in my sanctum to remind me of the sacrifices my men have made for me."

"Here child, put this upon your chest. Never take it off, this will protect you. Your father would want you to wear this proudly when you vanquish your enemies"

It was the armor Charlie had died in that day, but it had been repaired. It fit him perfectly.

"This will serve you well during this war. Now go, show Kaien that you have my blessing. Dont let Ceiran get to you. He like all who serve me have their shortcomings, but he is doing all he can right now. That is why he is my War Minister."

Kaien made his way back to the strategy room. He thought to himself, "This boy… this boy is truly the next legendary warrior of Shentu."

Warriors of the Past: Chapter Nine

The passing on of Charlie rang in his mind again, however he felt no pain. Kaien stood there thinking about what he saw earlier. He lost all awareness of his surroundings.

"Kaien, sir." One of the kings' attendants called. She had been calling him for a couple of minutes.

"MISTER VALIRAN, sir PLEASE RESPOND" she repeated

He snapped out of his trance.

"Why is it you bother me girl!","May I not think in peace?"

"I apologize sir, But there is a message for you from Kataania, it is thier ruler, and he wishes to speak directly to you."

"TEIRON GET IN HERE QUICKLY." Kaien demanded

"What is it, Kaien? I am a busy man. I have a war to fight! I cannot always come when you beckon."

"SHHHHH!!" Kaien interrupted

"Listen to this Lord Teiron"

"Patch it in through the communication station here girl." Kaien ordered the attendant

"Kaien, I am Ennsa, ruler of Kataania, you as well as the whole of Shentu will fall before my onslaught, that is, if you do not sacrifice your soul to my heir, I will order all one hundred thousand of my men hiding in the Maleron mountains to march on the Shentu capital."

Teiron was enraged. "DO NOT ACCEPT, I COMMAND YOU!! I WILL NOT HAVE THIS SCUM THREATEN ME OR MY KINGDOM ANY LONGER!"

"Fine." Kaien replied

Teiron stood there with his hand draped over his face in disgust. "Why? Why must you sacrifice yourself to him? Without you we cannot stand alone against them."

"Be calm Teiron. I plan to do no such thing. he whispered. I intend to ambush him and his soldiers. But first I must allow him to take us both as prisoners. Deion and I plan to assassinate him. I just need you to have all of your men ready for when I break free and give the signal, Teiron."

"Meet me at the summit of Maleron Peak in twelve hours, there you will be taken to Kataania and imprisoned. You have made a wise choice this day."

And then the communicator winked off.

"KAIEN DONT DO THIS PLEASE, THERE MUST BE ANOTHER WAY!!" Teiron yelled

Deion came running in with his new armor on his back. "I wouldnt go if I were you Kai, I will not watch you sacrifice yourself in vain. Don't you see? He intends to attack us regardless of whether you submit yourself or not."

"I am planning on it. That is why I want you by my side, boy. What you did earlier was no fluke. I need you to be my eyes while I endure my internment. Serve me and you serve Shentu. When I break out of the compound in the evening, we shall make our way through the base and call for Teiron to send his men."

Teiron was impressed. He had not heard such genius from any of his war ministers since he became king.

"For now however.." Teiron said, "As much as I hate to admit it, this is the best solution we have at the moment. We shall rest, and you shall begin your journey at sunrise."

All of them went to sleep with a great anticipation of the days to come, days that will determine the fate of Shentu.

They boarded thier airships as the first rays of sunlight had begun to illuminate the sky. Kaien's airship took flight towards Maleron pass, Deions' to the great Aennshar desert bordering the kingdom of Lyran.

His communicator crackled to life, "Deion, you will wait in hiding at one of our outposts in the Aennshar desert for Kaien to break free of the guards and give the signal" Teiron ordered "When he does, I will launch my assault from Shentu Kataanian border."

"This is the day I shall atone for the death of my comrade, this is the day that Shentu will no longer have any enemies to vanquish. For I shall sweep them beneath my feet." Kaien said to himself.

They arrived in a few hours time. As soon as Kaien had set foot on the mountain soil, he was taken prisoner by Ennsa's men. Kaien had a confident smile on his face. The plan was perfect and Ennsa was none the wiser.

Ennsa was small in stature, his eyes were a reddish hue. He had hardly the strength or the size to be a warrior.

"I will make you and your people suffer for all the defeats you have dealt us in the past, Shentu will fall. For my men shall attack in three days time, as for you… You will be made to watch as your beloved kigdom crumbles to the ground."

Kaien smirked, "I may not live to see the day when you will be crushed by the Shentu. Boast now, for the time will come when you shall be destroyed. When your head rolls along the floor of your castle, remember me."

Ennsa spun on his heels and stared Kaien in the eyes "You dare mock me in front of my men?" "You will pay with your life, but not now." He began to walk away.

"I have had enough of your insolent banter! GUARDS TAKE THIS SHENTU SCUM FROM MY SIGHT."

The time was at hand, the pieces have been set into motion. The war to end all wars is about to begin.
