What is this CISPA garbage? Here is a concept for a law, the internet shouldn't be touched. The end.

Is that related to this... I don't know much about it.... I saw this on my torrent site.

I'm not going to sugar coat this and say everything is going to be OK. It is not.

The Problem

Starting the 12th July 2012, Major ISP's in America are going to "actively monitor" "millions of BitTorrent users". More on this report on this thread where you can discuss this outrage. This post however, is going to try to help keep you under the radar. I will list several options which will help you avoid issues.

Option 1

Stop using bittorrent. I know this sounds like a very stupid "solution" but there are other methods to get content. Newsgroups is a popular alternative to obtain your wanted downloads. Unfortunately, I've not personally been downloading from Newsgroups for the last say 8 years and I cannot advise on the groups or news servers are best. Of course, you could also stop any kind of downloading altogether, which is what some people will end up doing.

Option 2

Make it as hard as hell for them to detect your activity. Things you can do include:

Turn DHT off. This should be off anyway.

http://i41.tinypic.com/x5dues.png

Enable Protocol Encryption.

http://i41.tinypic.com/5y5c01.png

Having "Allow incoming legacy connections" unchecked means that you won't peer with somebody who does not use Protocol Encryption. This will mean you will get less peers, but IMO if EVERYBODY turns on Protocol Encryption, this won't be too much of an issue.

Use Public DNS server instead of your ISP's DNS servers. Using any of the following DNS servers will make it so that your ISP can't (easily) see you making DNS queries to things like www.torrent-damage.net or tracker.torrent-damage.net. Public DNS servers include 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4 and 4.4.4.4

Only use trackers which support encryption for the tracker announces. If the ISP's can't see tracker information being sent and received, then they can't know you're being naughty. TD is presently testing a SSL tracker and while the tests are going well, we cannot promise to offer it. SSL always puts a strain on any server, and with an average of 10 million tracker announces a day - it's a hefty load as it is without SSL.

And STOP USING PUBLIC TRACKERS!!

Finally, I should note that any reasonably skilled individual can see through all of the above tricks, and still be able to assume (correctly) that you are a bittorrent user. All they have to do is monitor the amount of activity to known IP's (like ours) and they will see that any activity is probably "wrongful". While they can prove very little actual illegal activity, they can still say that you're using sites which have been known to assist copyright infringement.

Option 3

Unfortuantely, the next two options gets a bit expensive, but it's the most assured way that they cannot track your bittorrent activity.

Get a Seedbox. This is what I have. I've got a nice little seedbox in a foreign country, and I do all my bittorrenting to there. When I'm ready to download the content to my home, I do it via SSL FTP, so that my ISP cannot determine what kind of content it is I am obtaining.

The advantage of this is that because it's a seedbox, it also helps me seed back at great speeds, so I'm able to maintain a decent ratio on any site I'm on - not just TD.

Option 4

A VPN to an anonymiser service is the last bit of advice I can offer. This will mean that all activity you do - regardless of what it is - is tunneled to the ISP providing the VPN service, and your ISP cannot trace what you do at all. The most popular VPN providers are Swedish - because in Sweden there is a law which states that ISP's are not permitted to log your connections - so they cannot log which account used which IP at which particular time. Torrent-Damage has supported "paid" VPN services for a while now - we just don't allow "free" VPN or Anonymisers because they can be abused.

Conclusion

We sympathize with all of our American Users and hope that none of our flock are affected by these measures being taken by ISP's - who are doing nothing but the worst kind of oppression. You can bet your right testicle that UK is not far behind. If you choose to cease your torrenting activity, we will understand, but TD is not just a tracker - we're a great community, and being part of a community is not a crime. Don't disappear forever

I use it for the same thing... I just watch tv shows that I missed from channels that I already pay for. I'm too much of a snob to watch a downloaded movie, blu-rays only for me. Most of my music is bought from amazon or itunes.

Most of my music is 100% downloaded. But its mostly electronic weekly mixes that are free anyway.

The DNS and encryption stuff should be enough to keep you under the radar but the layman torrent users are going to start to get nabbed, and the cycle will continue as it always has. Nothing will stop it, the MPAA and RIAA need to get with the farking program instead of trying to pass laws and make it where you have to go to a store and fork over money for a plastic disk. Arcane business model?

GIVE PEOPLE THE CONTENT, you broadcast it, people DVR stuff, just put it up for streaming on the site right after it airs and roll. WTF is so hard about this, plaster ads on it to just like you do with TV and keep making money!

If i miss a show I can have it downloaded within 40 mins of it airing, and these are just regualar people lending a helping hand.....and these big ass companies can't get this done?

Well does this mean it passed the senate and was signed by Obama then?

Exactly, every single one of their shows should be online the next day or something. I sure as hell don't try to catch any shows on TV. My Netflix gets used a lot, but even then not all content is there I want.

They haven't mentioned anything about it.... 99% of the people on there use seed boxes, and never use public trackers. I haven't decided what I'm going to do yet.

I don't foresee myself playing many games anytime soon.

I still haven't started skyrim on my own system... Kinect support is released tomorrow, so it's kind of motivated me to start it.
