Nice view.... I want to go hiking too, but I avoid it during warm months because I hate snakes... especially the venomous variety.

Yeah I read that on CZ28 the other day, couldn't believe it. That would be quite the redesign! I like it though. They should probably call it something other than Mustang hahah.

Last time I went, we saw 8 copperheads, some were babies (more dangerous than adults) and were hard to see..... fuck that. The last thing I need is a snake bite 10 miles into the back country. Not to mention, you have to worry about bears, coyotes, etc. on top of that.

I was talking with my fiance's dad about this, he has been hiking for 10 years +. Out here in Oregon Bears are nothing to worry about (Bears are just as scared of you as you are them) Just go the other way or make alot of noise, Unless there is cubs involved then be quite and get the fuck out of there. The hiking we do there is somewhat of a trail so snakes spiders etc I've never seen yet. We are planning another this weekend so I will let you know what I see. Oh yeah .40 is going with me too just incase better to be safe then sorry. No comparisonn to the east coast this shit is real not sand and pine trees with scrubs. The drive alone to our last hike was 45 min on a dirt road up a Mtn with no guard rail and straight down the side with no cell service NOTHING. I found out you dont FK around and just go hiking out here You better have the 10 essientals before you do anything or its you vs mother nature.

Same here in NC... No cell service. Actually no cell service even in the towns close by. So driving there, you lose signal 2 hours before you even get to park your car. Long drives on dirt roads to get to the trails, and very easy to get lost, and turned around. People die all the time. I always pack a few extra days worth of food, gps, map, compass, fire starters, and emergency shelters, and water filters, etc. You gotta cross rivers waste deep to get where you're going too... it's not for casual hiker at all. Some guys are doing 30-40 mile backpacking trips in a few days. I'm not quite ready for that yet though. I'm not going more than 10 miles in for a few days. I still need practice, and I need to learn to keep weight down in my pack. Lightweight backpacking gear is super expensive.

Yeah, I know bear attacks are rare, but they do happen. I see bears all the time, so it only takes one encounter going wrong... Carried a .45 last time I went out, fortunately all we have here are black bears. However, if a black bear is attacking you it's because he's trying to eat you and that's a bad way to go out.

If you go to parks with dedicated trails, you'll be fine and won't see much other than occasional snakes, but if you like to go off trail deep into the back country there is a lot more to worry about.

I had a solar charger, extra flashlights, and back up batteries. Solar panel worked great for charging my iphone. It also started snowing unexpectedly... that could of been bad if we weren't prepared for the extreme weather. Always prepare for the worst, you can't always predict weather in the back country.
