Besides the gas engine in the VOLT doesn't power the car's driveline, it is a generator, it recharges the batteries. This is way more efficient than the engine driving the wheels. Wish they had the segment from Top Gear when they drove the two electric cars up on youtube. |

I'm not so sure about that... whenever energy is transferred from one thing to another, energy is wasted... law of physics. To go from motor to battery to drive line that's 3 major transfers of energy. To go from motor directly to drive line less is wasted. Or battery to drive line. You're essentially cutting out the middle man. Edited by ilivas, May 4 2012, 05:19 PM.

I would rather wait till our battery tech is good enough to run off batteries by themselves then. |

me too but they doesn't mean they can't produce it, if they don't start doing it it never will be good enough cause nobody will put the time and effort into seriously getting it done. Just like if they never made big chunk-o-junk laptops we'd never have the thin ones. They've done a good job given the tools. |

errrr not really. an engine speeding up and slowing down and loading stop start etc its very wasteful, this way the engine only has to run a single consistent speed. So the engine always runs in his most fuel efficient state and just generates electricity for a far better mode of moving the car *electric motors* gas powered engines create wasted energy left and right, they need to go away. fuel - to electric - to something is exactly how they generate electricity at a power plant, and how a train moves, if there was a better way to get it done.... it would be done. and yea look at trains... if engines were so great trains would be powered directly by those big huge diesel motors... but they aren't, electric motors move trains, not sloppy fuel burning engines. electric > fuel . our greatest fuel burning invention is the turbine, and even those transfer power down to electric motors in some cases. I don't agree with an electric motor charging batteries being more efficient than a battery only car. The less moving parts, the less energy wasted. Anytime you add an extra step to something more energy is wasted. I do agree, that a lot of energy is wasted through gasoline engines, although they are infinitely more efficient than they used to be, especially some select 4 cylinders (honda, and mitsu to be more specific).

Hmmm, pure electric cars have no future apart of urban cars... Hybrid is the way, and the Volt/Ampera is the best option right now. BTW, my project use the same idea than the Volt, gas engine as generator, electric engines to move the car. But our gas engine is a micro-turbine that surpass 80% efficiency, and the electric engines 95%. Our batteries are made of LiPo, without the generator we could drive 180 miles at 72mph. 700hp = 70/80 mpg Now compare it to a piston engine... 25% efficiency, 15% lost in the transmission... 700hp = 15 mpg |

Urban sounds right for zero emissions why else would you want to travel over 100 miles in a tuna can. Not really much comfort involved with the making of those cars. I have to say where I live I would love a leaf if it did not kill my electric bill. Gas is 4.00 + gallon and the town is small it fits like a shoe. |

Got any tips on purchasing a pair of first adult bikes? I'm considering getting into biking, but not sure if I want to stick to street or mountain biking. Also, I'm not sure what kind of bike I want. |

OooOo, well if you are just starting out I wouldn't suggest going straight to a street bike. Those have a little learning curve and require better balance. If you are just going to ride around town and maybe hit some light trails on the weekend a solid front susp 21 speed will be fine, what brands do your local bike shops carry? Something like what corey got would be fine. DO - NOT buy anything with a rear suspension unless you are going to spend every last second of the day on the trails, the bad ass trails. cause that is the ONLY place those bikes shine. Not something a beginner needs to be doing anyway.
