I wasn't wet when I went to sleep, and the smaller the bag, generally the warmer you are. Fortunately with my bag, I can have plenty of room and stay warm. There was no way for me to plan it, since I had never been there before. There is no way for me to tell where I will be crossing a river or not, by just looking at the map. You are right, I didn't plan well, enough mainly in the form of I had shitty equipment. Never again. There are somethings you can cheap out on sure... but the main things you really should spend money on are your sleeping bag, your tent, and your backpack. Water filters, stoves, knives, etc. you'll probably be fine. I'm getting this info from experienced backpackers. Sleeping bag needs to be light, and well insulated for obvious reasons, tent needs to be light, water proof, and be able to vent well so you don't get wet, and your backpack also needs to be light, and comfortable and take the load off your shoulders, and move to your hips so you don't fatigue easily, or injure yourself. These things cost a lot of money. This is why I'm asking sp00ke for bike advice, because I learned my lesson from this. Sure, I could get a wal-mart bike, and probably be ok for little strolls down the road, but I'd probably be safer, and enjoy it more if I had a nice bike and be able to do some more hardcore stuff. With any hobby, there is that line you need to cross where everything below a certain amount is shit and it's probably coming from a big box store (REI is the exception). You need to spend a certain amount to at least get a decent product. With a sleeping bag, it's probably in the $250 range. Same with a tent. The reason, I try to go that far out, is because I want to do real backpacking, the journey is part of the fun. If you want to just go out a mile, and do the touristy shit, getting cheap shit, is fine... hell bring an air mattress, a tv, whatever. You can load down your pack as heavy, and with as much shit as you want if you're not really going anywhere. You may as well car camp though, or take an RV imo. That's not what I like to do, I try to go on a real hike, and go out there for real. I try to go as far as I can, I'm trying to work myself up to being able to go 15 miles in a day. This would also put me far from any help if I needed any if my equipment fails. Yeah, tourist hikes, or walks in the park and car camping get whatever, but if you do serious backpacking, cough up the dough, or you won't be having a good time. True backpacking isn't spending $1,000 at dick's and be on your way. It's actually something you need to train to do, be physically fit enough, and know your shit... you need to have the skills to do it, or you can get hurt. Oh, and I forgot, you also might not want to cheap out on your boots. That can make or break a backpacking trip if you get shitty boots. Edited by ilivas, May 10 2012, 07:17 PM.

is there any solution to getting yourself off the ground? Just 1.5 feet off the ground can really help a freezing your ass off situation. I just don't see anything you can carry on your back working. Do good tents insulate enough to keep the frosty stuff from rolling in?? |

Yes, a good sleeping pad. I carry an inflatable sleeping pad which is also well insulated. Also, many people sleep in hammocks with a tarp over them. Tents themselves don't insulate very much, your sleeping pad, and sleeping bag is key. |

Hmm thank you internet, you make me realize how calm my dog is. She just barks annoyingly if someone is walking down the road or she thinks there is a loud vehicle nearby. She does this cool howl thing, not sure how to trigger it on demand or I'd have it on video already.

Only you would think that would be cool. My brother is pretty close to buying a gt500 or a Roush stage 3. We all know a early 1990's Camaro with coil packs will run those cars down at half throttle due to the monstrous horse power output of a fuel injected 350. |

yea i guess it really only takes down 3 models from ford mustangs 10,000 model line up. I keep my camaro cause I like it not because im tripping over myself to keep up with Mr.Jones. money is better left liquid and within hands reach instead of sitting in my driveway losing VALUE, go ahead buy lots of toys and bullshit ,who's really ahead? not the guy with a $50,000+ hunk of steel in his driveway. $$$$$ is king baby. debt isn't, if you can't buy it cash you can't afford it. He better buy 2011 and up, or a 90's Camaro with coil packs might just take him. I'm sure I shocked that 2010 Roush owner at Speed World last time I was out, and my car wasn't even running optimally.

I am actually going to pack tonight or tomorrow, which is actually unusual for me. Normally I'd be throwing stuff in bags the day I am leaving haha. Looks like Torchlight is single player. |

Oh hey guys....uhhhh....im back now. I just got done moving and the url to this site was on an extra laptop I had packed away. Lease times didn't line up right so I actually had to live with my parents for 2 weeks until this new place was ready haha. Anyway, in the new place for now. My girlfriend got a summer gig at a law firm up in Milwaukee so I came with her since i work out of the house. Been here since friday and so far it's pretty cool. Got a great place, 8th floor and on the lake. Close to downtown and walking distance to about 20 bars and brewerys, and 3 blocks from SummerFest...cant wait. I'll be up here until September, and then move back to Chicago. but anyway...whatd i miss...somebody cliff it for me. |
