I've been into photography for a while. Took a few classes in HS and College, but couldn't stand developing film so I burnt out of it. Over the last couple of years, I've been pretty interested in it. The chicago art museum opened up a new photography wing a few years ago, and I went and it kinda resparked my interest, but I just couldn't bring myself to drop the coin on a nice DSLR because I have a habit of picking up a new hobby and dropping it right away. anyway, I've been casually keeping an eye out for a good deal on a nice DSLR for the last year and a half, and finally found one about 3 weeks ago. My photog friend was selling some of his old gear since he upgraded to some better gear. I bought a Canon 40D, 28-168mm f3.5-5 lens, 2 memory cards, 2 batteries, nice small one strap backback for $650. I jumped on the deal because this is the camera i wanted, plus the cheapest ive seen them go is $500 for the body only, and another $350ish for this lens. plus i know the guy really well and have seen first hand numerous times how he handles and takes care of his shit, so I thought this was as good of time as any. I don't plan on becoming anything professional, I just like walkin around and snapping pics. Below are a few pics I took near the lake a few blocks from my place. Not that great, but Im still learning how to work everything haha. I take about 50-100 pics a day of random shit just trying techniques i read about on forums/books. anyone else into photo? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I really like this shot...it was shot from my kitchen window in my apartment. Shutter was open for 25 seconds to get all the light in. Detail is pretty crazy on the full sized pic. ![]() Link to bigger image Edited by Tommyb, Jun 20 2012, 11:45 AM.

im in real need of a DSLR, something with a manual focus and will keep the shutter open. Doing product pics for an ecomm site and a 16.1 point and shoot on a tripod is getting the job done but for the long term perm solution.. I NEED MORRRREEEEEE. I also need lights and a pure white back drop. much like everything else, I do nothing for fun and everything for work If you see a used cam for a decent price let me know. what do you think of those new nikon J1's ? they seem like an OK price for an OK DSLR since I don't need insane quality that a pro would use... its just going to sit on a tripod all day in front of a light kit. haha I have no idea about Nikon J1's. I'm just now getting into cameras so I pretty much just know what I have. My friend is a Canon guy tho, so I went that route. Canon and Nikon guys are like Camaro and Mustang guys....they dont really like each others shit haha. But he recognizes that Nikons are great cameras too, he just doesn't like em. My sister has a Nikon (not sure of the model) and I wasnt a huge fan. Pics are nice, but its way easier to get to all of the settings with my canon...just a lot more user friendly/efficient. But in the end its all personal preference. MP's are overrated IMO, unless you are blowing up prints for posters and stuff. my 40D is only like 10.1mp I think. But again, I wouldn't take my advise too seriously, I really have very little knowledge about camera models. Come to me when you need a new guitar haha |

I used to think MP were just b/s too until i went from an 8 to a 16.1, yea its better. You've just got more pixels to work with, so when im done editing i've got a much clearer final product. My pictures are 6.5MB a photo, I can crop that crap out of them and still end up with a high pixel count photo. again I don't know shit either im just basing this off exp and what im seeing with my eyeballs. I'll never need a new guitar, the old double cut les paul is still going strong after 53 years. |

That's awesome, I didn't know you played. I got to play a 60' doublecut at guitarcenters reserve stash. The p90 pickups sounded vintage as hell...had a lot more punch than I was expecting. but at the $2599 they were asking for it, I decided to pass.

yea this thing just keeps getting passed down, one day it will be like a $50,000 relic haahah still mint, but you can tell its been played and not at around in a case. Everytime I crack the case open its like sun beams shoot out, its the red one and the case is that super velvet red too. then i have a nice guild hollow body elec, its old too... i don't own anything that isn't older then me. Grandfather played, the huge collection passed down. Even have an old gibson bass that I don't even know how to play http://www.vintageguitarandbass.com/kalamazoo/bass/KB.php is this bad ass too? |

My knowledge of old basses isn't too extensive, but I think the Kalamazoo was an old offshoot of Gibson. Gibsons were made in Kalamazoo for a while (possibly still are), so that's where the name comes from. I would think it's like a lesser Gibson brand like Epiphone, which are more of a bang for your buck guitar, but still nice. But if it's vintage, i would imagine it could bring in a few dollars. EDIT - hah...i should have read the link you posted....it says pretty much everything i just did except in greater detail. Edited by Tommyb, Jun 20 2012, 04:27 PM.

yea I don't have anything that isn't vintage. I've kinda lost interest in playing, partly because there isn't anyone to play with around anymore.. you know how boring that is. |
