Word has reached Roma that the tax revenue stream from Macedonia has dried up to a trickle and when asked of the local magistrates they blame it on the tax farmers who are either not doing their jobs or on brigands and claim they are seeing the matter attended too. However, merchants traveling from across the province claim a different tale and say taxes are being collected as usual but that the magistrates are not sending it Roma. More alarming is that there is open and public outcries of support for the Hirtian rebels led by Spurius Hirtius Macedonicus Minor and even formations of troops being raised from amongst the Macedonicae veterans who had been settled in key areas of the province. Regardless of the issue, many are demanding someone be sent to ascertain the truth refusing to believe what they could be seeing; hoping it is mere corruption or incompetence keeping up the tax flow and not the first real evidence that the province has been lost to the Hirtians without a single sword blow. |
