Word has reached Roma that wealthy members in the cities of the province of Africa have heard of the republic's dire need for additional ships for her navy seeing as until the civil war is rectified she cannot fully correct the tax revenues. In light of this many, probably roused by Kaeso Iudicius, came together and donated money to ensure the fleet being constructed in Syracusae is properly outfitted. To that end, they paid for the construction and costs of five additional triremes, ten quinqiremes and even a hexareme to serve as a flagship. The Republic has the manpower to man these ships but merely lacks the money. For the time being at least, these ships are bought and paid for as well as their upkeep for a time and should assist the republican efforts in defeating the Hirtian rebellion. Many in the curia have taken note of this grand gesture of loyalty by the province and many are already thinking of drafting proposals which would greatly benefit the cities there, such as added highways and other infrastructure or laws enabling them to increase the sizes of their latifundae, especially when they would directly benefit the wealthy donors themselves. |
