Word has reached Roma that Classis Syracusensis under Praefectus Aulus Furius Laenas was defeated in a pitched sea battle several hours west of Salona. Though the Roman fleet held the numerical superiority over the rebels, the marines they employed were picked from the various legions under Decimus Flavius Tirianus' command and easily cut apart the newly raised Legio I Sabina and her men. By all reports the battle was going decently well until a rebel officer successfully boarded Laenas' flagship with a handful of men. In the ensuing engagement Laenas was slain and once he died the other officers in the fleet were lost on what to do as some attacked and some retreated. Though losses in the end were no terrible, the morale of the fleet has been shattered given the death of their commander and the loss of the Hexemere "Sepia". As we speak the fleet is attempting to regroup, however as it stands now the Hirtians have command of the sea, if at least temporarily. Edited by Ira Ivnonis, Jun 6 2014, 04:29 PM.
