Title: Disbandment of the Pontic Legions Sponsor: Proculus Hirtius Author: Proculus Hirtius Introduction: Before the close of the war, the Hirtian legions made a supreme demonstration of their willingness to serve the true republic once more. Their leaders struck a deal with our honorable Censor Sextus Antonius Syricus and they were instrumental in defeating the forces of Macedonicus and bringing Roma back into our hands. With the exception of I Celtica which was raised only two years ago, their enlistments are all but finished and our treasury is not in the greatest shape. Therefore, it would be prudent to speed along the honorable disbandment of these units. Senatus-Consultum: The following legions should be disbanded in accordance with the negotiations between Censor Sextus Antonius Syricus and the Pontic Legion leaders: Legio I Celtica Legio I Flavia Firma Legio III Pontica Rapax Legio IIII Pontica Marina Gemini Legio VI Pontica Gemini In all, 16,138 men will be taken from the legion rolls. Significantly decreasing our treasury’s financial obligations. Edited by Ira Ivnonis, Aug 8 2014, 10:56 AM.

*Kaeso Iudicius rose to stand and make his voice heard on this particular issue* "Esteemed brothers, I cannot help but feel we cannot rid ourselves faster of these men." he stated, making his feelings clear. "I question if we will have the necessary defenses should Taurica come marching in from the east. Disband the legions...assist the treasury. But I feel we should consider other steps to ensure the province continues to mine the gold and iron within her borders and keep that revenue flowing into our coffers." *Kaeso then sat back down to await any additional comment* |

"Excellent point Iudicius, and should this body take on my proposal for nationalizing the mines in the Sava Valley of Illyria, we can certainly make sure that revenue always flows to our state. On the matter of the Pontic legions though, it may perhaps be prudent to make sure they are available to serve a two to four year evocatii term. Many of the men - from what I know - plan on remaining in Illyria anyways. Perhaps we should place a stint onto their disbandment commanding them to remain in the area and be subject to recall should Roma need their services. Two to four years should give us enough time to settle the remaining embers of rebellion as well as begin the long recovery process in earnest." |

Decimus Furius rose from his seat, "Might I propose in the hindsight of the growing threat of Taurica that we ensure we retain the services of one legion to be posted in Macedon." |

Marcus Livius quickly rose "I agree with Decimus's wise suggestion, we must ensure Macedon is protected from the Taurican threat. " |

Galerius rose "Gentlemen might i remind you all that these men are set to stand down? It is one thing to tell a man that he has to protect his home and another to tell him he can not stand down and must relocate. Now I fully support telling two or even three legions they must aid Marcus Aemillius in pacifying Illyria. But moving one to Macedonia, that I can not support. The Taurican threat is not lost on me but I feel we need to handle that situation in a responsible way and placeing what is in essence a rebel legion in Macedonia can never happen. |
